Thursdays at the Institut historique allemand
Avec son cycle de conférences des « jeudis », l’Institut historique allemand (IHA) propose des sujets de l’actualité internationale en sciences humaines et sociales. Chaque conférence est suivie d’un commentaire et d’un débat afin de faire ressortir les spécificités théoriques et méthodologiques des différentes traditions historiographiques. Les sujets traités représentent donc des questions fondamentales de l’historiographie ainsi que des axes de la recherche actuelle à l’IHA, dont l’histoire intellectuelle, sociale et culturelle de la politique. L’IHA invite les chercheurs venant de tous horizons à participer à ce forum d’échanges où les controverses et les discussions scientifiques concourent à enrichir la pensée et les connaissances.

Le conflit sans combats dans les villes italiennes de l'arrière
Ce colloque international et interdisciplinaire souhaite se concentrer sur les territoires épargnés par les combats et sur le sort de la grande communauté des non-combattants plutôt que sur les opérations militaires et le quotidien des hommes au front. Il sera notamment consacré aux villes italiennes de l’arrière et à leur vie culturelle, restée intense durant la Grande Guerre.

L’ambition de ce colloque international est de réfléchir aux représentations de la guerre civile espagnole par la bande dessinée afin de mieux appréhender la valeur patrimoniale, mémorielle, esthétique et symbolique de ce corpus. Il réunit les spécialistes universitaires du sujet (en France, en Espagne et en Amérique latine) ainsi que plusieurs auteurs majeurs qui ont traité du conflit espagnol (entre autres Antonio Altarriba, Sento Llobel, Julio Ribera, Paco Roca, Tito…).

Memories and histories of the present in Spain and Latin America (2016-2017)
Institut d'histoire du temps présent /CNRS/université Paris 8/EHESS seminar
Nous centrerons notre réflexion sur le « retour de l’événement » tel qu’il apparaît à travers certaines commémorations (comme les bicentenaires des révolutions d’Indépendance de l’Amérique latine) ou au détour de certains faits marquants de ces dernières décennies. Les populismes, nationalismes et autres mouvements d’idées et pratiques politiques seront abordés à travers le prisme des reconfigurations historiographiques de type académique, mais également des résurgences de l’histoire officielle et des révisionnismes. Les multiples formes du conflit politique, des mouvements sociaux du XXe siècle aux répercussions des grands événements mondiaux seront analysées à l’aune des imaginaires sociaux.

Wars and armies - manufacturing the city
Ce colloque s’inscrit dans le cadre d’un cycle consacré aux conflits. Après un premier opus en 2014 consacré aux conflits et progrès scientifiques et techniques, ce sont les relations entre conflits, urbanismes et territoires qui sont au cœur du présent colloque. Quatre sessions spécifiques seront traitées : les fortifications : entre défense et développement urbain ; infrastructures militaires et urbanisme (avec un focus sur les bases OTAN) ; les reconstructions ; les traces urbaines des conflits et les reconversions.

L’histoire de la colonisation est parsemée de manifestations culturelles glorifiant l’hégémonie française. L’exposition coloniale de 1931 est, de ce point de vue, édifiante. Bien au-delà de ces expositions d’envergures, la situation coloniale a conditionné le développement des arts, du cinéma, de l’architecture mais aussi de l’enseignement. Dès 1951, Georges Balandier qualifiait la colonisation de « fait social total » et la culture, dans son sens le plus large, érigée en moyen de domination ultime, en fut l’un des chaînons. Cette série de séminaires aura, dès lors, pour objectif d’interroger, par des discussions thématiques – les festivals, le cinéma, la photographie, l’architecture et l’enseignement seront abordés - et en réunissant des chercheurs, doctorants, docteurs et artistes de divers horizons disciplinaires, la relation complexe et cruciale entre culture et colonisation.

The Transatlantic Embrace: Spanish Civil War in America’s Intimate Distance
Spanish Civil War has been studied under its multiple angles. This can also be said about the literature concerning this topic: novels, poems, and all literary forms generated by this armed conflict (both by Spanish and foreign intellectuals) have been commented by academic criticism from both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. However, fewer approaches have set the axis of their critical focus on the importance of the Spanish conflict in America and its decisive relevance as a part of a phenomenon that is also American. This special number of the FORMA journal sets out to give a voice to all types of contributions able to shed a new light on this fundamental aspect of the war, whose causes and consequences are clearly rooted in Spain, but whose horizon overflows the peninsular and continental borders and requires an inevitably transatlantic point of view.

Ce colloque tirera un bilan historiographique et proposera des perspectives de recherche sur l'histoire, des origines à nos jours, des protestantismes dans l'espace lorrain, un espace de frontières, de contacts et de diversité politique. Un accent sera mis sur la comparaison avec l'extérieur et sur les influences dues aux circulations des hommes et des idées.

Conflicts of memory: arts, history, commemorations
This conference will focus not only on historical events which fuel conflicting memories, but also on works of art – including those produced at the margins of institutions – which encourage or undermine the consensual interpretations of the past. Do artworks promoting a reinterpretation of the past help foster a new type of relationship between the present and the past? Do they open onto a different future? Some works spark off debates and suggest that memory is imbued with potentially irreconcilable sentiments. Historical materials and artworks convey this tension, articulating the gap between dominant and dominated memories. Does art help resolve conflicts or does it perpetuate them? Comparing different artists’ original takes on similar historical events may help us better understand the stakes behind conflicting memories.

The Allied Occupation of Germany Revisited
New Research on the Western Zones of Occupation, 1945-1949
The Allied occupation of Western Germany after the Second World War has recently seen a revival of interest among historians. This two-day international conference will showcase new research from scholars based across the globe and provide a forum for the presentation of innovative approaches to the history of the three western zones of occupation. It also aims to stimulate dialogue between historians of the different zones of occupation and so bring together hitherto almost entirely segregated historiographies.

A Realm of Memory of the Cold War
Whether or not “the entire world” was looking at Berlin, as Reuter asserted, is one of the central questions to be addressed at our conference. Starting from the “frontline city” of Berlin, we will cast our glance to West Germany and its neighboring countries in order not only to frame the Berlin Airlift as a transnational memorial of the Cold War, but also to address, from outside, the question of whether Berlin was really the international focus of the East-West conflict back then, as the press and academia so often portray it.

Rock and Violence in Europe (1950's-1980's)
This event is the first of two conferences, the second of which will take place in 2019 under the sponsorship of the History department at California State University, Long Beach. The first component, at Rouen, concentrates on Europe, while the second part, on the same theme, will focus on the situation in the Americas. The purpose of these two events is to gain an understanding of the place of rock in contemporary culture and to define its significance and impact in our societies. From this starting point, the conferences will also endeavor to consider the part of legend that encompasses the myth of rock music. The association between rock and violence, however fantastical and artificially constructed, is a given which has penetrated the music's history during the second part of the twentieth century; in some ways, the recent dramatic events at the Bataclan have highlighted this in an extremely tragic manner.

Les années 1980-1990 ont vu un vaste renouvellement de la réflexion sur les structures sociales de la domination, qu’elles relèvent du « genre », de la « classe » ou de la « race » (comprise comme naturalisation de rapports de domination inséparables du fait colonial). Ainsi, des notions comme l’intersectionnalité et la colonialité ont émergé pour tenter de penser l’intrication des dominations de genre, de race et de classe.

Discourse, ceremonies and practices in and beyond the Iberic Monarchies
In recent years historiography has been slowly acknowledging the potential of civil societies to restore concord after profound divisions. It also has uncovered the pacification strategies of authorities to reconcile and reincorporate individuals and social groups after periods of contestation and revolt. These complex processes are crucial to better understand the history of the Iberic monarchies, which have been able to develop a long-term government despite many crises of different origin and outlook. Hence, this conference will be focused on the themes of reconciliation and reincorporation from following four perspectives: Words, discourses and emotions (semantics and sentiments), Negotiating reconciliation (promotors and strategies), Making reconciliation work (agents and mediators, processes and forms), In the margin of reconciliations (the undecided and excluded)

Writing in the time of war (Europe, 15th-17th centuries)
Le présent projet entend aborder le rapport au « fait militaire » – entendu dans un sens large – à travers l’étude de documents naviguant entre l’écriture de soi et l’écriture de l’histoire. En effet, la période envisagée (XVe-XVIIe siècle) autorise l’historien à s’interroger sur la guerre comme élément du quotidien, comme réalité à laquelle l’individu – peu importe sa position au niveau social – est confronté. Les anciens Pays-Bas burgondo-habsbourgeois sont, par exemple, un laboratoire fertile compte tenu des nombreux conflits qui s’y sont déroulés, des migrations que ceux-ci ont engendrées, des séparations qu’ils ont provoquées. Loin de se limiter à un spectre local, la guerre et le rapport que l’Homme entretient avec, doivent aussi pour l’époque retenue s’envisager dans une optique transnationale.

Né des réflexions des membres du Département d’étude des religions, ce projet s’inscrit à la suite de leurs recherches menées sur les religions, leur rapport à la paix et à la violence. Les événements dramatiques survenus en France en janvier dernier, puis en novembre 2015, le contexte international, – notamment les conflits du Proche-Orient – , rendent nécessaire une réflexion universitaire soucieuse de répondre aux défis théoriques et pratiques de notre époque, en dialogue avec les acteurs de terrain.

Bragance - ville dont l'histoire se trouve intimement liée au Royaume de France - ouvre cette année un musée conçu par l'architecte Eduardo Souto de Moura, Prix Pritzker 2011. Contigu au Musée d'Art Contemporain Graça Morais, le site entend retracer l'histoire de la culture séfarade, très présente de part et d'autre de la frontière du Nord-Est du Portugal, laquelle est profondément marquée par l'errance, l'exil, la clandestinité. Cet évènement est l'occasion de re/lancer la réflexion sur l'étendue sémantique, thématique et critique de telles notions, d'abord associées à un peuple historiquement contraint à l'exode, mais dont le destin peut servir de (pré)figuration à d'autres expériences exiliques, notamment dans notre actualité.

The "Face" of First World War Battlefields and Battles
The centenary in 2016 of the two iconic battles of the First World War – Verdun and the Somme – leads us to reconsider battles and battlefields in the historiography of the First World War. Since John Keegan’s pioneering Face of Battle (1976), generations of historians have expanded our understanding of the experience of combat, as well as our knowledge of the literary and artistic representations of the battlefield. The way we think about the legacy of battles in the memory of the First World War around the world, too, has changed. Our week in Verdun and Péronne will not only give us time to reflect on the current state of research on the battles of the First World War and discover the most recent advancements in battlefield archeology and environmental history of warfare, but also confront these readings with on-the-ground visits to the sites studied.
