Material cultures of Psychiatry
In the past, our ideas of psychiatric hospitals and their history have been shaped by objects like straitjackets, cribs and binding belts. These powerful objects are often used as a synonym for psychiatry and the way psychiatric patients are treated. But what do we really know about the social life (see Majerus 2011) of psychiatric patients and the stories of less spectacular objects in the everyday life of psychiatric institutions? What do we know about the material cultures of these places in general?

Conference, symposium - Europe
The Roll in Western Europe in the Late Middle Ages
Rolls were used in all aspects of medieval society. Key areas in which rolls were utilized include administration, genealogies, poetry, liturgy and heraldry. Despite the significance of the roll as a form for medieval writing culture, it has not received as much attention in respect to its significance. The international conference The Roll in Western Europe in the Late Middle Ages focuses on the materiality and the praxeology of late medieval rolls (1200 – 1500), particularly in England and France. The presentations deal with questions regarding the purpose and function of the rolls, the advantages and disadvantages of the roll form and why it was preferred for certain texts over other forms, such as the codex.

Time, Space, and Power in Qualitative Research on the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) Region and Europe
Since the start of the 21st century seemingly unpredictable change, in all its different guises, has fueled the preoccupations of academic and non-academic publics. The financial crisis, the “Arab Spring”, protest movements in southern Europe, the rise of Daesh and right-wing populism, as well as the environmental crisis all make it very difficult to rely on Francis Fukuyama’s theory of “end of history”, which now seems to merely reflect the euphoria of liberal elites following the collapse of the Soviet Union (1992). This workshop intends to reflect more closely on the webs of power affecting both the researcher and‚ the researched when they intend to represent change.

The international recognition of States
From Antiquity to Modern Times
International recognition creates legitimacy for the independent existence of new, sovereign political units. On the one hand, it is a re-ordering process; on the other, it functions as a conflict-resolution mechanism within the framework of the international coping practice of crises. As a legal, political and territorial reorganization, it calls into question the various social actors and makes it necessary to mobilize scientific, technical, intellectual and / or symbolic means. The creation of a new, sovereign unity also forces the redistribution of political power and social authority. It can be the trigger of an inter-state war or a civil war, lead to territorial fragmentation, the appearance of an independent nation on the world stage, or the beginning of a long period of peace. This international colloquium seeks to explore the figure of recognition in all its historical complexity and from various points of view.

Liminal bodily experiences in dreams: Literature, the Fine Arts, Theatre, Music and Film
The enigmatic anthropological phenomenon of dreaming has always captured the imagination of European cultures: dream depictions can be found in artistic media from the antiquity to the present day. Depending on their specific historical and cultural contexts, the representations of dreams – whether in literary texts, paintings, music or on the stage – clearly differ from each other in their aesthetic and formal components. However, representations of dreams share one theme in particular which cuts across all historical and cultural boundaries: the transition between life and non-life as an existential, liminal experience, similar to those found in the processes of giving birth/being born and in dying. It is this theme that our conference takes into view.

The imagined woman in Medieval and Early Modern Europe
Interdisciplinary perspectives
With a decidedly interdisciplinary agenda, and focusing on Medieval and Early Modern Europe, this conference investigates the image and imagery of women, as well as the concepts attached to both. In suggesting an approach capable of integrating diverse aspects, its aim is to complement the research so far, which has tended to focus either on historical studies concerning influential female individuals and writers, or on works scrutinizing the literary imagery relating to women.

Memory and the making of knowledge in the Early Modern world
While memory is an established sub-field within these disciplines, its themes and sources have led to an over-representation of the ancient and modern worlds, meaning that the early modern era has been comparatively neglected. The School seeks not merely to redress this imbalance, but also to explore how studies of memory and early modernity might shape one another in the future. Participants in the Summer School, which will take place between 18 and 22 September 2017, will have the opportunity to discuss the most recent research presented by leading scholars in the field, to learn or refine skills in workshops that focus on the media and techniques of memory, and to present their own work to a uniquely qualified and supportive international peer group.

Digital Humanities – Opportunities and Risks. Connecting Libraries and Research
Digital Humanities is widely understood to mean the use of computer-aided and data-driven research methods and techniques in both the arts and humanities. Some examples of this are critical editions, lexicographical projects, as well as the historical reception of large-scale collections, whether of visual objects or literary textual corpora. But intrinsic to the digitally-enabled arts and humanities are the holdings and collections offered up to researchers by libraries and other cultural heritage and memory institutions. In addition academic libraries also have an integrating role to play between the researcher, the interested public and the collections not only of libraries, but also of museums and archives especially, where strong regional cooperation or collaborations across borders have been established. Essential to this for this role are services that present appropriately curated digitized materials and provide access to them.
