A transnational dialogue
Although it has long been existing on the other side of the Atlantic, where it found institutionalisation in the wake of post world war II black social movements in the United States, the field of Black Studies is only emerging in Europe. Its development is uneven, however. Some European countries show a longer history and a more prolific scholarship than others in the study of people categorized as “Black”. Different approaches are being used, and different traditions are being formed. The relationships between scholarship, activism and the wider political landscape are more or less close, more or less explicit, more or less influential to each other, depending on the context.

In Search of Cultural Conformity
The New Integration and Migration Policies in Europe
MAM is a network of scholars from the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) who have been working together for almost ten years on Migrations, Asylum and Multiculturalism (MAM). This research tested the hypothesis that the citizenship regime mutated since the 2000s. While between the 1980s and 2000 integration policies followed the logic of establishing migrants’ rights through the granting of formal status, since the 2000s a new regime of probationary citizenship seems to focus on the principles of merit and of cultural conformity. The results of this research, which includes comparative analyses of the policies, analyses of the their origins and implementation, and analyses of the attitudes of different groups towards the policies, will be put in comparison with the researches of different international experts.

Territorial attractiveness and quality of life
Special session, Sixth EUGEO, congress on the Geography of Europe
As part EUGEO 2017 we propose a special session, on territorial attractiveness and quality of life. We wish to explore innovative ways of conceiving territorial attractiveness. How to think of attractiveness in innovative terms? How do we think about this innovation in terms that do not limit themselves to governance structures? How, for example, to innovate in terms of actors involved, selected indicators, policies ... In short, three main axes will guide this special session: Innovative strategies for territorial attractiveness; Quality of life, well-being and territorial attractiveness; Territorial perceptions and representations in the service of attractiveness.

A century of artist workshops in Belgium (1830-1930)
Cette première journée d’études intitulée « Ouvrir l’atelier » est organisée conjointement par des chercheuses de l’Universiteit Gent et de l’Université libre de Bruxelles, qui ont fait des ateliers un de leurs objets de recherche et d’enseignement en histoire de l’art, en architecture, en littérature et en géographie. La journée abordera dans leur complexité les liens tissés entre les artistes, leurs pratiques et leurs espaces de travail, et l’inscription de ceux-ci dans leur environnement, à travers le prisme des ateliers en Belgique. En adoptant un regard historicisé – un siècle durant lequel le statut des artistes n’a cessé d’évoluer – nous souhaitons poser la question de la construction matérielle et symbolique, et de l’occupation de lieux pensés comme ateliers ou redéfinis comme tels, et de leur mode d’intégration dans la ville.

Henri Sauvage : from Art Nouveau to Art Deco
Restoration Projects
Henri Sauvage (1873-1932) est un architecte et décorateur français majeur de son époque, dont l’œuvre s’étend de l’Art nouveau à l’Art Déco et annonce le modernisme. Par un hasard du calendrier, plusieurs restaurations de ses bâtiments sont actuellement en cours de préparation (Villa Majorelle à Nancy, la Piscine des Amiraux à Paris, la Maison Losseau à Mons). Afin de profiter de cette occasion unique, une demi-journée spéciale d’étude a été organisée. Dans un premier temps sous la forme de conférence internationale, les principaux acteurs de ces différents projets de restauration ont été invités à présenter leurs projets à différents stades d’avancement. Suivra dans un second temps une master classe internationale où ces intervenants seront rejoints par des architectes belges, également spécialisés en restauration, afin de partager leur expérience et points de vue.

Between Violence and Legal Protection 1912-1923
On 9 and 10 March 2017, the Jewish Museum of Belgium in collaboration with CegeSoma organizes an international colloquium at the Royal Library of Belgium (Brussels). The violence perpetrated against minorities is one key issue, while their legal protection, is another. The conference tackles the period from 1912 to 1923. Lectures by historians from Europe, North America and the Middle East will be alternated with discussions. Attention will also be given to contemporary issues related to these questions.

Contemporary prison architecture
Materialities, utopias, prospects
Ce séminaire opte pour un double parti pris. D’abord, il convient de se focaliser exclusivement sur des questions d’espace(s) pour évoquer la prison. En effet, la sociologie carcérale étant foisonnante, la focale d’analyse sera singulièrement réduite afin de se concentrer sur des questions architecturales, géographiques et spatiales. Ensuite, les interventions et discussions porteront essentiellement sur la prison contemporaine, c’est-à-dire en admettant les analyses historiques ou prospectives pour ce qu’elles ont à dire sur la prison, le système carcéral et la politique pénitentiaire d’aujourd’hui.
