Research visit to the IZEA interdisciplinary research centre (Interdisziplinäres Zentrum für die Erforschung der Europäischen Aufklärung)
Chaque année, le centre IZEA (Interdisziplinäres Zentrum für die Erforschung der Europäischen Aufklärung) offre deux bourses Wiedemann pour des projets de recherche dédiés à l’étude des Lumières européennes. Afin de permettre à des chercheurs allemands et étrangers d’effectuer un séjour à Halle, une bourse pour doctorants ainsi qu’une bourse pour chercheurs plus expérimentés sont offertes annuellement.

An International Symposium
A symposium, New Directions for Libraries, Scholars, and Partnerships, will take place on Friday, October 13, 2017, at the German National Library during the Frankfurt Book Fair. The Symposium is sponsored by the Collaborative Initiative for French Language Collections (CIFNAL) and the German-North American Resources Partnership (GNARP), both working projects of the Center for Research Libraries (Chicago, USA), with support from the German National Library and other French, German, and international partners. Session topics include: collections and collaboration; digital scholarship; the publishing revolution; new dimensions of service to scholars and students; and new strategies for services and partnerships.

Die Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften (BBAW) ist eine Körperschaft des öffentlichen Rechts mit Sitz in Berlin. Ihr wissenschaftliches Profil ist vor allem geprägt durch langfristig orientierte Grundlagenforschung der Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften. Die Akademie beschäftigt etwa 350 Mitarbeiter/innen, ihr Jahresbudget beträgt rund 20 Mio. Euro. Die Akademie sucht für das Akademienvorhaben „Alexander von Humboldt auf Reisen – Wissenschaft aus der Bewegung (AvH-R)“ zum 1. Oktober 2017 eine/n wissenschaftliche/n Mitarbeiter/in mit 80% der tariflichen Regelarbeitszeit, zunächst befristet für zwei Jahre.

The Roll in Western Europe in the Late Middle Ages
Rolls were used in all aspects of medieval society. Key areas in which rolls were utilized include administration, genealogies, poetry, liturgy and heraldry. Despite the significance of the roll as a form for medieval writing culture, it has not received as much attention in respect to its significance. The international conference The Roll in Western Europe in the Late Middle Ages focuses on the materiality and the praxeology of late medieval rolls (1200 – 1500), particularly in England and France. The presentations deal with questions regarding the purpose and function of the rolls, the advantages and disadvantages of the roll form and why it was preferred for certain texts over other forms, such as the codex.

Time, Space, and Power in Qualitative Research on the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) Region and Europe
Since the start of the 21st century seemingly unpredictable change, in all its different guises, has fueled the preoccupations of academic and non-academic publics. The financial crisis, the “Arab Spring”, protest movements in southern Europe, the rise of Daesh and right-wing populism, as well as the environmental crisis all make it very difficult to rely on Francis Fukuyama’s theory of “end of history”, which now seems to merely reflect the euphoria of liberal elites following the collapse of the Soviet Union (1992). This workshop intends to reflect more closely on the webs of power affecting both the researcher and‚ the researched when they intend to represent change.

A PhD and project position in History
Darmstadt University of Technology (TU Darmstadt), near Frankfurt, Germany, announces a three-year position for a doctoral student (with the option of a two-year extension), beginning October 1, 2017. We welcome applications from talented and diligent students with research experience from the former “French” parts of Sub-Saharan Africa who are willing to explore new historical perspectives, empirically and methodologically. The successful candidate will become a part of a larger project called “A Global History of Technology, 1850–2000” (GLOBAL-HOT).

Le phénomène des fraternisations en temps de guerre englobe des réalités diverses traditionnellement divisées en deux champs de recherche : les fraternisations entre soldats ennemis au front et les fraternisations entre les combattants et la population civile à l’arrière. Ces dernières ont notamment été étudiées par le biais des fraternisations dans les zones occupées, comme par exemple les rapprochements entre des soldats allemands et des femmes françaises lors de l’Occupation allemande en France de 1940 à 1944. Alors que ces fraternisations de l’intérieur ont été au cœur de nombreuses recherches depuis les années 1980, celles du front ont, quant à elles, été quelque peu délaissées par le champ de la recherche historique.

The purpose of the workshop is to offer participants in seminars and working groups the basic tools for beginning research in the archives of the Holy See and of other Roman ecclesiastical institutions as well as to provide elements for a critical interpretation of the sources and their contextualization through the most current literature.

Colloque et école d’été franco-allemands (Münster, 8/9 juin 2017)
L’atelier „Les tendances actuelles de la recherche médiéviste en France » souhaite offrir un forum pour les professeurs et autres enseignants-chercheurs, pour les post-doctorants, les doctorants et les étudiants en histoire médiévale afin qu’ils puissent débattre et échanger intensément sur les tendances actuelles de la recherche. À cette fin, quatre champs de recherche de la médiévistique francophone actuelle seront plus particulièrement examinés. Les échanges entre chercheurs germanophones et francophones doivent permettre à chacun de trouver une source d’inspiration dans la culture scientifique de leurs interlocuteurs. Dans le même temps, il s’agira de réfléchir aux sources éventuelles d’incompatibilités. With a decidedly interdisciplinary agenda, and focusing on Medieval and Early Modern Europe, this conference investigates the image and imagery of women, as well as the concepts attached to both. In suggesting an approach capable of integrating diverse aspects, its aim is to complement the research so far, which has tended to focus either on historical studies concerning influential female individuals and writers, or on works scrutinizing the literary imagery relating to women.

Medium-term travel grants in history and social science at the Franco-German Institute in Francfort
L'Institut franco-allemand de sciences historiques et sociales (IFRA-SHS) de Francfort propose deux bourses scientifiques de moyenne durée pour l'été 2017. Elles s'adressent à des doctorants (bourse Mandrou de 1300 euros) et postdoctorants (bourse Monod de 1500 euros) engagés dans une recherche en sciences humaines portant sur l’histoire et la civilisation des pays germaniques du Moyen Âge à la première moitié du XXe siècle, ou sur des sujets relevant d’autres disciplines des sciences sociales, dont la dimension franco-allemande constitue un élément important et une réelle plus-value scientifique.

L’Institut historique allemand (IHA) offre aux étudiants et doctorants français une excursion à Munich dont le thème sera « Aperçu de la recherche allemande en histoire médiévale », du 3 au 7 septembre 2017 à Munich. Le voyage d’études offre, à des étudiants et doctorants allemands et français en histoire du Moyen Âge disposant des connaissances de base de l’autre langue, l’occasion de se familiariser avec la pratique de la recherche et du paysage scientifique en Allemagne.

The minimum wage - remuneration in German and French law, a comparative approach
La rémunération – comparaison des jurisprudences franco-allemandes
Deux ans après l'entrée en vigueur en Allemagne de la loi sur le salaire minimum légal (MiLoG), un premier bilan est possible. L'objectif de cette journée d'études sera de comparer les droits français et allemand en s'intéressant au raisonnement utilisé par les juges en matière de salaire minimum. Cette analyse s'effectuera en partant de situations concrètes (par exemple, faut-il ou non tenir compte des sommes versées au titre d'une « prime de XIIIe mois » pour s'assurer que le salarié a bénéficié du salaire minimum légal ?), afin de mettre en évidence les divergences et convergences des droits français et allemand.

Le colloque entend intensifier le dialogue entre chercheurs français et allemands spécialistes de la Première Guerre mondiale et des cultures mémorielles, tant en littérature qu'en art, qui en sont issues. Les spécialistes des faits historiques, littéraires, culturels et sociaux s'intéresseront ainsi, sous l'angle d'une approche comparée, à l'année 1917 et aux initiatives de paix qui s'y déployèrent. Ce faisant, il s'agira de remplacer le manichéisme d'une historiographie nationale par une approche franco-allemande au coeur de laquelle l'aspiration à une sortie de guerre non corrélée à une victoire militaire sera observée dans toute sa dimension historique. Parallèlement, il s'agit, au cours d'une année commémorative 2017, de déplacer le regard vers la thématique des sorties de guerre conçue sous un angle interdisciplinaire convoquant les différentes disciplines des sciences humaines et sociales partageant une même historicité à croiser leurs approches au profit de l'étude d'un phénomène pluridimensionnel.

Intercultural dialogue and interdisciplinary perspectives
L’atelier a pour objectif de proposer à des jeunes chercheurs français et allemands spécialisés en histoire et en histoire du droit un forum de discussion durant lequel ils pourront engager un dialogue interdisciplinaire et présenter leurs recherches sur les relations, les influences réciproques et les courants contraires entre les notions de travail et de famille du Moyen Âge central à la fin de l’époque moderne (vers 1100-1815). Ses trois angles d’approche - le phénomène de négociation des normes, les inégalités dans le travail, et l’influence du contexte politique, culturel et socio-économique - permettront aux participants d’investir le thème peu exploré des relations entre travail et famille dans le cadre d’une diversité sociale et culturelle.

Romain Rolland and Germany during the Great War - connections, perception and reception
« Comment être plus négligé que ne l’est aujourd’hui Romain Rolland (1866-1944) ? », s’interrogeait Florent Georgesco dans une chronique publiée dans Le Monde des livres à l’occasion de la sortie du Journal de Vézelay. Ce constat, formulé en décembre 2012, est aujourd’hui en grande partie dépassé. Portée par le formidable engouement médiatique et scientifique suscité par le centenaire de la Grande Guerre, l’œuvre de Rolland est sortie du purgatoire dans lequel l’histoire l’avait enfermée.
