    The medieval horse

    Palfreys and rounceys, hackneys and packhorses, warhorses and coursers, not to mention the mysterious “dung mare” – they were all part of everyday life in the Middle Ages. Every cleric and monk, no matter how immersed in his devotional routine and books he would be, every nun, no matter how reclusive her life, every peasant, no matter how poor his household, would have some experience of horses. To the medieval people, horses were as habitual as cars in the modern times. Besides, there was the daily co-existence with horses to which many representatives of the gentry and nobility – both male and female – were exposed, which far exceeds the experience of most amateur riders today.

    This panel aims to study settlement patterns of migrants, according to a gendered approach. It aims to bring together scholars working on migration and settlement dynamics, by focusing on the extension and quality of relationships that newcomers could develop in the new environment and by highlighting differences between men and women. In addition it aims to investigate how these ties influenced, successfully or not, their settlement process: the daily life, the research of a job or a house, the access to credit networks, to poor relief or to other urban resources etc...

    La généalogie est un puissant idiome de hiérarchisation sociale dans l'Europe d'Ancien Régime et garde son efficace bien au delà des transformations sociales portées par l'âge des Lumières. On s'interrogera dès lors sur les transformations qu'a subies, dans l’espace temporel qui va de Fénelon à Kant, cette forme particulière de connaissance qu’est la raison généalogique, ainsi que les usages qu’en faisaient les différents acteurs sociaux.
