  Palfreys and rounceys, hackneys and packhorses, warhorses and coursers, not to mention the mysterious “dung mare” – they were all part of everyday life in the Middle Ages. Every cleric and monk, no matter how immersed in his devotional routine and books he would be, every nun, no matter how reclusive her life, every peasant, no matter how poor his household, would have some experience of horses. To the medieval people, horses were as habitual as cars in the modern times. Besides, there was the daily co-existence with horses to which many representatives of the gentry and nobility – both male and female – were exposed, which far exceeds the experience of most amateur riders today.

  Colloque en l'honneur de Laurence Brockliss et Colin Jones

  À l’occasion du vingtième anniversaire de la publication de ce livre et du départ en retraite de Laurence W. Brockliss, des collègues et anciens étudiants ont souhaité organisé un colloque en leur honneur. Ce livre représente un apport majeur à l’histoire de la médecine en intégrant les aspects sociaux, institutionnels et intellectuels pour construire une histoire renouvelée des savoirs à l’époque moderne. Il croise également les approches intellectuelles et culturelles des traditions historiographiques française et britannique et constitue un encouragement pour poursuivre ces échanges intellectuels.

  31e colloque annuel de la Society for the Study of French History

  L’histoire de la France a été profondément influencée par ses engagements européens et mondiaux. Que ce soit par ses engagements diplomatiques ou militaires, ses interactions coloniales, les échanges culturels ou intellectuels ou les interconnections du commerce, le caractère fluide et perméable des frontières de la France a apporté une variété d’influences sur l’histoire de la France. Pendant que le rôle et le statut de la France dans l’Europe et le monde ont changé, les perceptions et les représentations de la France ont changé aussi.

  Rationalité généalogique et statut social au temps des Lumières

  La généalogie est un puissant idiome de hiérarchisation sociale dans l'Europe d'Ancien Régime et garde son efficace bien au delà des transformations sociales portées par l'âge des Lumières. On s'interrogera dès lors sur les transformations qu'a subies, dans l’espace temporel qui va de Fénelon à Kant, cette forme particulière de connaissance qu’est la raison généalogique, ainsi que les usages qu’en faisaient les différents acteurs sociaux.

  Europe and the East

  Self and Other in the History of the European idea

  Throughout the centuries, Europe has constantly defined and imagined itself in opposition to or in conjunction with the East. From Montesquieu and Boulanger’s Oriental despotism to Marx’s Asiatic mode of production and twentieth-century fears of Soviet aggression, intellectuals, writers, and politicians have conceived of Europe as the place of liberty and progress in opposition to ‘its’ East. Such ideological creations and clichéd attitudes continued into the twentieth century, when during the Cold War Europe was once more identified with the free and ostensibly more advanced western half of the Continent. It is the aim of this international and interdisciplinary conference, to bring the ‘East’ back in, i.e. to shed light on its role and significance, as a geopolitical and geo-cultural notion, in defining discourses and images of Europe from the seventeenth century onwards.
