Scaling. What happens when we scale things up or down?

Internationales Kolleg für Kulturtechnikforschung und Medienphilosophie 2018

The 2018 session will be devoted to the investigation of scale and scaling as operative concepts for the analysis of media. What happens when we scale? Does anything really change? Can scaling ever impact the inner blueprint of an object? Are there laws of scaling? Or does scaling resist any attempt at calculability, such that, to investigate it, we can only ever look at individual events of scaling? As a media practice, scaling is widely used. But, in contrast to the ubiquity of operations, scaling is hardly ever viewed on its own terms as a basic concept of media analysis. The Princeton-Weimar Summer School for Media Studies 2018 will attempt to map out approaches to scaling as a basic media-analytical tool.

Sera au cœur du travail l'étude des usages des termes « moderne », « contemporain », « actuel » et « avant-garde » au sein des discours de l'art de la région.

L’analyse de l’activité est devenue une expression très courante dans le domaine de la formation professionnelle. L’idée sous-jacente est simple : la formation professionnelle doit s’adosser, d’une manière ou d’une autre, à une compréhension du travail qui va au-delà de son aspect prescrit. De nombreux travaux mentionnent ainsi une analyse de l’activité comme phase première du travail de recherche mais sans qu’en soit donné beaucoup plus de détails.

Understanding and stimulating social sciences and humanities impact and engagement with society

Training school

This training school provides participants with insights into the theories and practices of stimulating impact creation from social sciences and humanities research. It will focuses on three specific dimensions. Firstly, creating a conceptual understanding on the specificities of social sciences and humanities (SSH) impact and non-linear impact models. Secondly, alternative appropriate policy frameworks for maximising SSH impact. Finally, we will explore ways of supporting scholarly practices to optimise the creation of impact through SSH research, and capturing this with evaluation systems.

L’appel à candidature pour la neuvième université d’été du RéDoc (réseau des écoles doctorales en sociologie / sciences sociales de l'Association internationale des sociologues de langue française) est ouvert. Elle se déroulera à Ottawa du 18 au 22 juin 2018, sous le thème « De l’observation à la production de connaissances : les médiations dans la recherche en sciences sociales ». Les universités d'été du RéDoc consistent en des communications scientifiques de doctorant·e·s francophones, couplées à des conférences de chercheurs, maîtres de conférences, et professeurs.

Action nationale de formation sur l'enquête par questionnaire

L’action nationale de formation (ANF) « Questio » propose, sur un même lieu et sur une même semaine, une formation complète sur l'enquête par questionnaire. Elle vise aussi à favoriser la réflexivité sur les pratiques et les usages d’enquêtes, et à mutualiser les expériences de chacun. En faisant appel à des experts de la méthode, l’ANF s'adresse en priorité aux membres du réseau métier Mate-SHS (Méthodes, analyses, terrains, enquêtes en sciences humaines et sociales), mais aussi aux chercheurs et doctorants en sciences humaines et sociales voulant mettre à jour leurs connaissances et se spécialiser.

The Summer School is aimed at Master’s students, PhD students, young researchers, scholars and practitioners in the area of second language learning and teaching who already engage in or would like to become involved in theatre/drama activities and research into these. Cette université d’été a deux objectifs. le premier est d'explorer un secteur mal étudié de l’ethnologie comme la musique dans les camps de transit. S’il existe une abondante littérature historienne et musicologique sur la musique dans les camps de concentration et dans les camps d’extermination, rares sont les études qui portent sur les pratiques musiciennes. Le second objectif est de construire une démarche comparative afin de mesurer la singularité d’une observation ponctuelle sur ce que l’on appelle la crise des migrants en Europe : Paris, Baigorri, Calais, Dunkerque (France), Friedland (Göttingen, Allemagne), M’Bera (Mauritanie), Mentao (Burkina Faso), Zaatari (Jordanie).

The digital humanities have a growing impact on teaching, researching and on dissemination in the humanities, and are nowadays an almost mandatory approach for new research projects and for young researchers curriculum. This summer school aims at providing concrete answers to specific needs and challenges emerging from projects carried out by master and PhD students, and post-doctoral researchers in the arts, humanities and social sciences.

Memory and the making of knowledge in the Early Modern world

While memory is an established sub-field within these disciplines, its themes and sources have led to an over-representation of the ancient and modern worlds, meaning that the early modern era has been comparatively neglected. The School seeks not merely to redress this imbalance, but also to explore how studies of memory and early modernity might shape one another in the future. Participants in the Summer School, which will take place between 18 and 22 September 2017, will have the opportunity to discuss the most recent research presented by leading scholars in the field, to learn or refine skills in workshops that focus on the media and techniques of memory, and to present their own work to a uniquely qualified and supportive international peer group.

Scuola estiva internazionale in Toscana di studi leopardiani, pascoliani e montaliani

La “Scuola estiva internazionale in Toscana di Studi leopardiani, pascoliani e montaliani” (III edizione, 2017) è un’iniziativa accademica che vede coinvolto il settore contemporaneistico del “Dipartimento di Italianistica e Comparatistica” della Facoltà di Scienze della Formazione dell’Università Cattolica di Milano. È realizzata in collaborazione con il “Centro di Cultura dell’Università Cattolica” di Lucca (fondato nel 1975). Ai propri iscritti, la Scuola propone una settimana residenziale – nel centro storico della suggestiva città di Lucca – dedicata a un ciclo intensivo di lezioni e di conferenze (inframmezzato da tour lucchesi e da gite culturali in Toscana) finalizzate ad approfondire la conoscenza del pensiero e dell’opera di tre dei più importanti poeti italiani dell’Ottocento e del Novecento – Giacomo Leopardi (1798-1837), Giovanni Pascoli (1855-1912) ed Eugenio Montale (1896-1981).

Cette master class franco-allemande en humanités numériques vise à rassembler huit jeunes chercheurs allemands et huit jeunes chercheurs français participant à ou porteurs de projets en humanités numériques et à leur offrir un forum où échanger de manière fructueuse pour la poursuite de leur recherche, autour de la question de la gestion des données de la recherche. Chacun(e) doit être prêt à présenter son projet (et les données afférentes sous un format ouvert) et à le mettre en dialogue avec ceux des autres particpant(e)s dans un type de rencontre proche d’un THATCamp, c’est-à-dire sans enseignement magistral ni exposé frontal.

In the face of the current ecological crisis, how shall we rethink concepts and practices of environment, ecology, difference, and technology to envision and create a more just, sustainable, and diverse planet? The combined histories of colonialism, extraction industries, energy, as well as innovation in design, architecture, literature and technology offer a lens by which to examine how contemporary techno-scientific societies envision planetary futures. Site visits exploring resource extraction, colonialism in urban policy and planning, and speculative architectural design will be accompanied by an analysis of science fiction, science technology, speculative design and ethnography, as well as life and earth sciences.

Focusing on the works by Leone (1909-1944) and Natalia Ginzburg (1916-1991) the Summer School is dedicated to a reflection on the authors’ contribution to the 20th century Italian and European history. Besides a critical analysis of their creative and intellectual activity and their civic engagement, the participants will have the opportunity to debate the role both Leone and Natalia had in the publishing house Einaudi, and to experiment new methods of teaching literature. École d’été DARIAH

La journée inaugurale introduira les problématiques et objectifs de cette école d’été. Les journées suivantes alterneront des matinées de présentations et des après-midis d’ateliers de mise en œuvre pratique en groupes. Les stagiaires apprendront à traiter les documents sources dans un environnement numérique avec des outils adaptés. Plusieurs documents patrimoniaux sélectionnés dans les fonds des bibliothèques et archives du Mans, du Maine et de l’Anjou, préalablement préparés en version numérique, serviront d’appui aux exercices. Des conférences, ouvertes au public, de spécialistes internationaux clôtureront les journées sur plusieurs aspects de la « Bibliotheca digitalis ».

Sources, figures et enjeux de l’autorité dans leurs rapports aux jeunes et aux sociétés globalisées : le cas du monde musulman et de l’Europe

Lors de cette Summer School, il sera question de faire un état des débats contemporains en France et en Belgique dans les milieux musulmans concernant les logiques de légitimation et dedélégitimation du savoir religieux et de l’autorité religieuse dans la pensée sunnite contemporaine. Il sera aussi question d’en analyser les enjeux principaux, en prenant en compte la diversité des positions et des courants, mais aussi les logiques dominantes et les concurrences et tensions.
