Policing port cities during the colonial era : Tianjin and Shanghai interaction between Western and Oriental police forces, 1860-1945

Limits of the western police model in China

In the past 20 years, the Research Center on Shanghai History (ECNU) and the Lyon Institute of East Asian Studies (IAO) have established close cooperative relations : joint projects, joint publications, joints conferences, as well as the co-training of graduate students have become significant and regular markers of increasingly close relationships. On this basis we hope to further co-promote Shanghai and Tianjin as centers of new urban history and social order. This project will avail new archival materials (municipalities archives), memoirs of policemen, photography, illustrated journals, correspondances, police reports etc…

Assises de l'anthropologie de la Chine en France

Ce premier colloque réunit des spécialistes du monde chinois (Taiwan et diasporas inclus) dont les recherches, basées sur des enquêtes de terrain menées dans la longue durée, s’inscrivent pleinement dans une démarche anthropologique. En effet, l’objectif de cette rencontre est avant tout disciplinaire, et vise à mettre en avant l’apport de l’anthropologie francophone sur le monde chinois. Notre but est à terme de faire reconnaitre « l’anthropologie de la Chine » comme un domaine de recherche avec ses caractéristiques propres, réunissant la maîtrise et les spécificités des études chinoises (haut niveau de langue et de connaissances sinologiques) et de l’anthropologie (enquêtes de terrain de longue durée, analyses descriptives et théoriques).

New research on the History of Chinese gardens and landscapes

Organised by Dr Jan Woudstra in conjunction with the Gardens Trust, the event will look at new discoveries in the field from both professionals and post-graduate students from around the world. Dr Alison Hardie will introduce the conference and outline the importance that Maggie Keswick’s 1978 book The Chinese Garden, History Art and Architecture has played in the subject. It is a unique opportunity to hear speakers from UK and International institutions to present their new research in the field. Talks will cover subjects as wide-ranging as Jesuit water landscapes, gardens as museums, Feng Shui symbolism and botanical watercolours.
