  The Middle East and Europe: cross-cultural, diplomatic and economic exchanges in the early modern period (1500-1820)

  This conference is an international symposium that proposes to study the entire range of exchanges and relations established between these two areas during the Early Modern Times (1500-1820). Its main objective is to think about diplomatic, economic, religious and cultural links between Europe and the Middle East by calling upon over twenty researchers with specializations in the Arab, Persian and Muslim world. In addition, this conference will provide a comprehensive overview to date of the Arabian Gulf at a time of major political change, including the successive arrival of the European “trading empires”. It will focus on some of the methodological challenges raised by a global, connected and cross-cultural thinking approach to the History of the Middle East and Europe”.

  Turkey at the heart of contemporary political and social issues

  International sociology week 2017

  La VIIe semaine internationale de sociologie est consacrée à la Turquie. Deux conférences porteront sur la période contemporaine : l’anthropologue N. Sirman interviendra sur la vie quotidienne en marge de la loi de populations kurdes déplacées dans le Sud de la Turquie, tandis que la politiste A. Uysal rendra compte d'une face peu connue de la vie politique turque : les actions protestataires des années 1990 à aujourd’hui. Deux historiens proposeront une analyse d’institutions centrales : E. Szureck  s’interrogera sur les ressorts culturels et sociaux de la transformation de la langue turque entre 1850 et 1950 et S. Akgönül présentera une socio-histoire comparative de la notion de laïcité en France et en Turquie entre 1923 et aujourd'hui. Enfin le sociologue I. Birkan explorera les enjeux des politiques culturelles de la République turque.
