Return migration, social remittances and transnational citizenship practices
Si les problématiques de « l’assimilation », du « multiculturalisme » ou de « l’intégration » des migrants dans la société d’installation ont occupé, jusqu’à la fin des années 1980, la recherche en sciences sociales sur le fait migratoire, les transnational studies se sont présentées comme une « nouvelle » approche analytique, capable de désigner la capacité des migrants à tisser et à maintenir des relations économiques, politiques et socioculturelles liant leurs sociétés d’installation et d’origine. Ainsi, le migrant conceptualisé comme « transmigrant » (Glick Schiller et. al., 1995) permet de percevoir d’autres dynamiques engendrées par les migrations en portant l’attention également sur les transferts sociaux (Levitt, 1998) et politiques (Ostergaard-Nielsen, 2003; Collyer, 2014). Au travers de l’étude des pratiques transnationales des migrants ce sont aussi les implications pour les individus et communautés non migrants qui ont fait l’objet d’un intérêt croissant (Levitt and Lamba-Nieves, 2013).

La dimension spatiale des inégalités sociales est aujourd’hui questionnée par de nombreux travaux. Dans un mouvement de regain des approches localisées de la structure sociale, la prise en compte de cette dimension a contribué à renouveler les débats sur la stratification sociale, mais aussi à enrichir l’analyse de nombreux faits sociaux, au-delà des seuls champs de la sociologie urbaine ou de la sociologie de la stratification sociale. Dans ce contexte, alors que les enquêtes souffrent souvent d’une approche statique de la ségrégation et des relations entre groupes sociaux et territoires, la prise en compte des mobilités spatiales offre une perspective capable d’éclairer la structuration de classe des sociétés contemporaines sous un jour renouvelé.

The Black Metropolis, between past and future
Race, urban planning and African-American culture in Chicago
The colloquium will celebrate the centenary of the “Great Migration” and explore the social and cultural life of Chicago South Side and West Side from the end of the Thirties, which were marked by the cultural zenith of Bronzeville neighborhood and a series of measures for the Black community inspired by the New Deal, to the present, which is characterized by numerous private and public initiatives in favor of an urban renewal. This international and multidisciplinary colloquium seeks to reevaluate the contribution of the South Side and the West Side to the definition and evolution of the African-American identity from the beginning of the XXth Century until the contemporary moment.

Comparative Perspectives on Urban Diversity from the Gulf and Beyond
This conference aims to revisit the notion of cosmopolitanism in Gulf cities and other regional areas from a comparative perspective. It will be a unique opportunity for scholars of the Gulf and other world regions to engage with cosmopolitanism or otherwise probe the intersection of global studies, urban studies and migration studies from a range of disciplines. More specifically, panels will be organized around the following research themes:“cosmopolitan canopy”, cosmopolitanism in theoretical and comparative perspectives, new geographies of cosmopolitanism in Gulf cities.

Le colloque intitulé « Les frontières du privé » organisé par le Groupe de recherches sociologiques sur les sociétés contemporaines (GRESCO) entend questionner les frontières d'une catégorie faisant l'objet de multiples usages, mais encore assez peu théorisée et donnant lieu à des définitions hétérogènes : le « privé ». Saisir le privé à partir de ses limites et des lignes de démarcation qui le séparent d'autres espaces et d'autres temps (publics, professionnels, institutionnels, etc.) ; telle est la réflexion collective à laquelle nous vous convions chaleureusement à partir de plus d'une trentaine de contributions émanant de chercheur·e·s en sciences sociales.

Spatial mobility and social classes
Organisées conjointement par le RT5 « Classes, inégalités, fragmentations » et le RT42 « Sociologie des élites » de l’Association française de sociologie, ces journées proposent ainsi d’explorer la diversité des formes et des ressorts des pratiques de mobilité spatiale et d’interroger la manière dont elles s’articulent avec la stratification sociale. Elles invitent à se départir d’une vision normative de la mobilité : si « l’injonction à la mobilité » (Fol, 2010) touche l’ensemble des groupes sociaux, il convient d’interroger les manières socialement différenciées qu’ont les individus d’y répondre en fonction de leurs positions dans l’espace social et géographique.

La journée d’études « Cultures, arts et littératures périphériques dans le Brésil contemporain » se propose, par une approche interdisciplinaire, d’interroger les notions de périphérie / centre, marges, frontières dans ses modalités artistiques variées dans le Brésil hyper contemporain. Il s’agit notamment d’identifier, de comparer et de croiser ce phénomène et ces productions artistiques périphériques dans d’autres villes / espaces brésiliens.

Social movements and mobilisations in working class districts
Le groupe de travail transversal JEDI (Justice, Espace, Discriminations, Inégalités) du LABEX Futurs urbains (Université Paris-Est) organise sa troisième journée d’études sur les classes populaires. Elle fait suite à deux journées d’études organisées en 2015, l’une sur les classes populaires contemporaines en France (mars 2015), l’autre sur les rapports au politique des classes populaires et les liens entre genre et classes populaires (automne 2015). Cette nouvelle journée d’études sera consacrée aux mouvements sociaux et mobilisations dans les quartiers populaires, toujours dans une perspective interdisciplinaire croisant la sociologie, les sciences politiques, l’histoire et la géographie.

The Caribbean city, the unknown. Heterogeneous human settlements, legacies of the colonial era, refuge of the disadvantaged and homeless, mixed and fragmented, and the showcases of Caribbean tourism, the urban Caribbean presents itself as the economic ambition of these insular territories and other shores bathed by the Caribbean sea. The Caribbean city, a chaotic juxtaposition of modernity and the colonial past, and existing both as a social and political symbol, opens up a rich and immense new area. Sometimes characterized by European allure, the remainder of Africa - some may say -, American city - without a doubt -, hybrid format, the Caribbean city presents a particular subject of study.

Actualities and new perspectives in social science research
Homelessness, has been recognized as a public problem, not only by international organizations, but also by the national and local authorities from many countries. Homelessness became also a scientific problem. Many generations of researchers conducted inquiries among homeless people. They analysed the phenomenon of homelessness in a longer history of the treatment of poverty in the occidental societies. They were also able to describe the survival on the streets, the different configurations of support, the social violence against homeless people, the construction of social problem during different eras, etc. This congress wishes to offer a space for exchange in order to develop new perspectives in the field of homelessness research.

Urban Studies and Practices Journal (JUSP), Special issue
Cities worldwide are major magnets for migrants. Urban environments shape migrants’ experiences in a new locale, whereas migrants contribute to increasing diversity of the city. Due to its extreme complexity and dynamic nature, the reality under the “migrant and the city” interconnection is rarely considered in theoretical accounts, empirical methodologies, or practical interventions in its full diversity. This special issue of the JUSP aims to harness the elusive reality of this interconnection by bridging both disciplinary and theory-practice gaps and inviting scholars and practitioners to share their reflections on the topic. In this issue, we are especially interested in creating a multifaceted account of integration (or assimilation, incorporation, acculturation) as one of the ways to talk about this interconnection.
