Special issue of “Journal of Energy History” (JEHRHE)

If historians of art have generally investigated complex dynamics between light and dark more than historians, light is still too often analyzed alone, without reference to darkness. For these reasons, this special issue of Journal of Energy History (JEHRHE) aims to challenge this reductionistic framework, which simplifies the complex variety of historical (and contemporary) cases, in order to explore the nuances of light and darkness created by candle, kerosene, oil, gas, and electricity and therefore tease out the diverse, sometimes contradictory, meanings and experiences of light(s) and darkness(es) in the past. We thus seek to study the juxtaposition of light and dark, placing this contrast in dialogue within broader conversations in the history of energy, environmental history, the history of technology, and related fields.

Cosmopolitanism revisited

Comparative Perspectives on Urban Diversity from the Gulf and Beyond

This conference aims to revisit the notion of cosmopolitanism in Gulf cities and other regional areas from a comparative perspective. It will be a unique opportunity for scholars of the Gulf and other world regions to engage with cosmopolitanism or otherwise probe the intersection of global studies, urban studies and migration studies from a range of disciplines. More specifically, panels will be organized around the following research themes:“cosmopolitan canopy”, cosmopolitanism in theoretical and comparative perspectives, new geographies of cosmopolitanism in Gulf cities.

Nuestra propuesta de sesión para Latin American Studies Association (LASA) 2018 se propone crear un espacio de contacto y diálogo entre investigaciones que aborden desde una perspectiva etnográfico-antropológica o micro-histórica las realidades urbanas en el área andina, evidenciando cómo el estudio de la vida cotidiana, de las prácticas de memoria popular, y las lógicas de creación de subjetividades subalternas permiten considerar de manera diferente el fenómeno urbano, a través de sus múltiples variaciones.

Space(s) of care, tension and presence

Above all, the call for papers emphasizes the correlation between hospitality and space. Jacques Godbout, in his article "Receiving is to give", specifies that hospitality is a "gift of space". So what are the characteristics of these given spaces? Are they permanent, temporary or transitional? Are there inherent areas of hospitality? And how are they built? From hospitals to home, what are these spaces and what is their spatial nature? And what meaning of hospitality do these spaces convey? What kind of space does hospitality produce?

Perspectives for documentation and future exploitation

Les bains municipaux de Strasbourg (1908/10) sont un parimoine culturel transnational d'un genre unique au monde. Fleuron de la politique sociale très progressiste de la municipalité alsacienne au temps du Reichsland allemand, ils comprennent deux bassins, des bains-douches, des bains romains, ainsi qu'une aile médicale. Restés quasiment intacts durant leur service ininterrompu depuis plus de cent ans, ils doivent subir une rénovation importante afin de pouvoir continuer à fonctionner. Au moment où la Ville de Strasbourg discute de la meilleure façon pour préparer ce patrimoine pour l'avenir, une perspective franco-allemande a pour objectif d'esquisser des perspectives d'action sur le fonds de rénovations qui ont déjà eu lieu en Allemagne.

Cet appel à communication vise à inciter / inviter les acteurs du monde de l’eau à réfléchir au devenir des cours d’eau. Par l’intermédiaire de l’analyse du fonctionnement et de la gestion des cours d’eau, aussi bien les chercheurs que d’autres acteurs de l’eau (prescripteurs, maîtres d'œuvre, maitres d'ouvrage, praticiens, gestionnaires, associations, usagers, habitants des territoires, etc) participent à l'imagination et à la construction des cours d’eau de demain. En effet à l’heure de la gouvernance et de la co-production des connaissances et des problématiques, l’ouverture à la pluralité des parties prenantes est prônée.

Intangibility Matters

International Conference on the values of tangible heritage

Tangible heritage is the support of some of the most relevant and perennial values of Mankind. It connects us with History, projects us to past environments and to lost cultural contexts, includes landmarks of our identity and constitutes a relevant economic asset. Therefore tangible heritage has intangible aspects inextricably associated to it and when tangible heritage is addressed, intangibility matters. Conservation of tangible heritage is a cultural act with the value approach as a leading concept. The protection statutes, the arguments used to sustain the protection policies, the management options and definition of priorities, the allocation of resources and the uses of heritage assets are intimately connected and dependent on values, bringing to focus the intangible side of their nature.

On the walls of the city - Urbanités journal no.9

Revue « Urbanités » n°9

« Moi, à Los Angeles, j’ai surtout vu des murs : tout d’abord des graffitis beaux comme des peintures, signés par des dizaines d’anonymes sur des murs longs comme des serpents mythiques. (…) On dit murals en américain, je les appelle murals. Mural come mur vivant, mur vital, mur moral. Mural comme mur parlant, mur murmurant. Mural comme un mur râle, l’autre pas[1] ». Dans son #9, la revue Urbanités a décidé de porter le regard sur des objets souvent ignorés par les études urbaines, et qui sont pourtant sous nos yeux, en ville, à chaque coin de rue. L’enjeu de ce numéro est de se pencher aussi sur ce qui est en jeu, socialement mais aussi spatialement, quand une image existe en ville, sur les raisons et les modalités de son existence dans l’espace, ainsi que sur les effets sociaux et spatiaux de son exposition en ville.
