Scaling. What happens when we scale things up or down?
Princeton-Weimar Summer School for Media Studies 2018
The 2018 session will be devoted to the investigation of scale and scaling as operative concepts for the analysis of media. What happens when we scale? Does anything really change? Can scaling ever impact the inner blueprint of an object? Are there laws of scaling? Or does scaling resist any attempt at calculability, such that, to investigate it, we can only ever look at individual events of scaling? As a media practice, scaling is widely used. But, in contrast to the ubiquity of operations, scaling is hardly ever viewed on its own terms as a basic concept of media analysis. The Princeton-Weimar Summer School for Media Studies 2018 will attempt to map out approaches to scaling as a basic media-analytical tool.

The presence of the absent: History, memory, post-memory

If History as a discipline evokes the past from the present, the activity of memory is the product of the eruption of the past in the present. The absent is made present according to this phenomenological difference, although this distinctive mark is not what has sparked the reaction of historiography. This workshop aims to delve into the links and differences between history and memory in order to approach new issues that allow us to reflect on historians’ activity in democratic societies where the past has ceased to be a monopoly of professional representation.

Cultural industries and artistic creation laboratory - young researchers' network
Le réseau des jeunes chercheur·es du laboratoire d'excellence « Industries culturelles et création artistique » lance pour la première année une résidence d’écriture collaborative de trois jours à destination des jeunes chercheur·es. L’objectif du séjour est d’offrir un cadre calme et propice à la coopération entre auteurs pour rédiger ensemble leur article et produire la version la plus aboutie possible dans le temps imparti. Cette résidence a pour objectif de valoriser et faciliter la collaboration des jeunes chercheur·es dans la production de leurs recherches et la rédaction d’articles scientifiques. Dans un contexte particulièrement ouvert à l’interdisciplinarité et aux partenariats entre les pays, les universités, les laboratoires et les chercheur·es, le réseau souhaite mettre en place un cadre favorable à l’échange et au partage des compétences dans la production scientifique de ses jeunes chercheur·es.

Understanding and stimulating social sciences and humanities impact and engagement with society
Training school
This training school provides participants with insights into the theories and practices of stimulating impact creation from social sciences and humanities research. It will focuses on three specific dimensions. Firstly, creating a conceptual understanding on the specificities of social sciences and humanities (SSH) impact and non-linear impact models. Secondly, alternative appropriate policy frameworks for maximising SSH impact. Finally, we will explore ways of supporting scholarly practices to optimise the creation of impact through SSH research, and capturing this with evaluation systems.

L’appel à candidature pour la neuvième université d’été du RéDoc (réseau des écoles doctorales en sociologie / sciences sociales de l'Association internationale des sociologues de langue française) est ouvert. Elle se déroulera à Ottawa du 18 au 22 juin 2018, sous le thème « De l’observation à la production de connaissances : les médiations dans la recherche en sciences sociales ». Les universités d'été du RéDoc consistent en des communications scientifiques de doctorant·e·s francophones, couplées à des conférences de chercheurs, maîtres de conférences, et professeurs.

Plus largement, cette semaine de formation peut intéresser les masterant(e)s dont les recherches portent sur l’histoire des sociétés urbaines d’Italie et d’Occident, dans l’Antiquité et au Moyen Âge.

National training program in questionnaire interviews
L’action nationale de formation (ANF) « Questio » propose, sur un même lieu et sur une même semaine, une formation complète sur l'enquête par questionnaire. Elle vise aussi à favoriser la réflexivité sur les pratiques et les usages d’enquêtes, et à mutualiser les expériences de chacun. En faisant appel à des experts de la méthode, l’ANF s'adresse en priorité aux membres du réseau métier Mate-SHS (Méthodes, analyses, terrains, enquêtes en sciences humaines et sociales), mais aussi aux chercheurs et doctorants en sciences humaines et sociales voulant mettre à jour leurs connaissances et se spécialiser.

The globalisation of health - knowledge, practices, politics
Une école thématique interdisciplinaire de recherche intitulée « La mondialisation de la santé : savoirs, pratiques, politiques » se déroulera à Marseille du 23 au 27 octobre 2017. Celle-ci combinera la réflexion sur des thématiques nouvelles ou émergentes, la formation des jeunes chercheurs (doctorants et post-doctorants) et le développement des échanges entre tous ceux qui au sein de PSL travaillent sur les questions de santé mondialisée de façon plus ou moins isolée. Elle interrogera le phénomène contemporain de « santé globale » avec ses acteurs, ses cibles, ses outils et pratiques spécifiques d’intervention dans une perspective qui tienne compte de l’inscription de ces processus dans une durée qui n’est pas seulement celle associée aux constructions impériales et postcoloniales.

Il vise à proposer un examen croisé des cultures politiques dans la péninsule Ibérique et au Maghreb au Moyen Âge (VIIIe-XVe siècle). Dans toute la mesure du possible, et sans jamais rien retirer aux singularités des contextes respectifs, l’étude sera fondée sur une démarche résolument comparatiste et pluridisciplinaire, associant historiens, archéologues, historiens de l’art et littéraires.

Making art in an emergency situation
Cette université d’été a deux objectifs. le premier est d'explorer un secteur mal étudié de l’ethnologie comme la musique dans les camps de transit. S’il existe une abondante littérature historienne et musicologique sur la musique dans les camps de concentration et dans les camps d’extermination, rares sont les études qui portent sur les pratiques musiciennes. Le second objectif est de construire une démarche comparative afin de mesurer la singularité d’une observation ponctuelle sur ce que l’on appelle la crise des migrants en Europe : Paris, Baigorri, Calais, Dunkerque (France), Friedland (Göttingen, Allemagne), M’Bera (Mauritanie), Mentao (Burkina Faso), Zaatari (Jordanie).

Depuis plusieurs décennies, l’utilisation du terme générique « vulnérable » par les pouvoirs publics s’est peu à peu étendue à des situations et problématiques hétérogènes : handicap, âge avancé, pauvreté, situation de « sans » (papiers, logement, emploi, etc.), risques environnementaux… Ce module de formation propose de comprendre ces notions de vulnérabilité/populations vulnérables, et de revenir, avec les chercheurs, sur les conditions de réalisation de recherches portant sur ces populations vulnérables.

Reading and analysing Ottoman manuscript sources
During the four-day programme we will introduce young researchers (mostly MA and PhD candidates, but postdocs may also apply) to reading, combining and analysing manuscript sources from various archives of the Ottoman era, produced at local, provincial and imperial levels. We concentrate mainly on materials from the 16th and 20th centuries, but welcome also explorations into earlier archives.

This summer school aims at providing concrete answers to specific needs and challenges emerging from projects carried out by master and PhD students, and post-doctoral researchers in the arts, humanities and social sciences.

Memory and the making of knowledge in the Early Modern world
While memory is an established sub-field within these disciplines, its themes and sources have led to an over-representation of the ancient and modern worlds, meaning that the early modern era has been comparatively neglected. The School seeks not merely to redress this imbalance, but also to explore how studies of memory and early modernity might shape one another in the future. Participants in the Summer School, which will take place between 18 and 22 September 2017, will have the opportunity to discuss the most recent research presented by leading scholars in the field, to learn or refine skills in workshops that focus on the media and techniques of memory, and to present their own work to a uniquely qualified and supportive international peer group.

In the face of the current ecological crisis, how shall we rethink concepts and practices of environment, ecology, difference, and technology to envision and create a more just, sustainable, and diverse planet? The combined histories of colonialism, extraction industries, energy, as well as innovation in design, architecture, literature and technology offer a lens by which to examine how contemporary techno-scientific societies envision planetary futures. Site visits exploring resource extraction, colonialism in urban policy and planning, and speculative architectural design will be accompanied by an analysis of science fiction, science technology, speculative design and ethnography, as well as life and earth sciences.

Family morphologies: Leone and Natalia Ginzburg in Italian and European literature and culture
Focusing on the works by Leone (1909-1944) and Natalia Ginzburg (1916-1991) the Summer School is dedicated to a reflection on the authors’ contribution to the 20th century Italian and European history. Besides a critical analysis of their creative and intellectual activity and their civic engagement, the participants will have the opportunity to debate the role both Leone and Natalia had in the publishing house Einaudi, and to experiment new methods of teaching literature.
