The world as seen from Asia - history and cartographical practices in the Asian world
L’émergence spectaculaire de l’Asie sur la scène internationale et son rôle moteur dans la mondialisation actuelle sont à l’origine de nouvelles réflexions sur cette région et sur ses interactions avec le reste du monde. Le séminaire « Le Monde vu d’Asie : histoire et pratiques cartographiques dans les mondes asiatiques » s’inscrit dans cette perspective et plus précisément dans l’entreprise de décentrement de l’histoire du monde. Il entend participer pleinement à l’écriture collective d’une nouvelle histoire de l’Asie et du monde et promouvoir la recherche historique et épistémologique sur les pratiques cartographiques et les savoirs géographiques, qui contribuent à la construction des discours locaux, nationaux, régionaux ou mondiaux en Asie.

"Imaginary homelands": South Asian Literatures in diaspora
Le projet DELI (« Dictionnaire encyclopédique des littératures de l’Inde ») organise le 7 décembre 2017 à la Maison des sciences de l’Homme sa cinquième journée d'étude. Intitulée « Littératures d'Asie du Sud en diaspora », cette journée d'étude vise à interroger la nature des phénomènes littéraires découlant des diasporas sud-asiatiques, récentes ou plus anciennes. Cette journée d'étude est organisée avec le soutien du Centre d’études de l’Inde et de l’Asie du Sud.

Comparative Perspectives on Urban Diversity from the Gulf and Beyond
This conference aims to revisit the notion of cosmopolitanism in Gulf cities and other regional areas from a comparative perspective. It will be a unique opportunity for scholars of the Gulf and other world regions to engage with cosmopolitanism or otherwise probe the intersection of global studies, urban studies and migration studies from a range of disciplines. More specifically, panels will be organized around the following research themes:“cosmopolitan canopy”, cosmopolitanism in theoretical and comparative perspectives, new geographies of cosmopolitanism in Gulf cities.

What role does dessalination have in adapting to climatic change?
La Société hydrotechnique de France (SHF), l’Association française pour l’eau l’irrigation et le drainage (AFEID), l’Académie de l’eau poursuivent leurs travaux sur les questions liées aux futures tensions sur la gestion de l’eau, en lien avec le changement climatique et les évolutions sur l’usage de l’eau d’ici 2050. Ces travaux soulignent l’importance de considérer la palette complète des outils d’adaptation, organisationnels et techniques, tant pour l’usage économe de l’eau que pour la sécurisation de la ressource. Le dessalement fait partie de cette palette d’outils et fera l’objet de ce colloque.

Coping with risks in agriculture
What challenges and prospects?
The objective of this international symposium is to bring together international researchers in social sciences and agricultural professionals to answer essential questions on risks in agriculture. This symposium will allow an update on the state-of-the-art in risk management in agriculture, with the feedback and experience of agricultural professionals and research results from international academics of the social sciences. The goal of this conference is to contribute to a joint reflection on the challenges farmers are facing today in terms of risks and how they cope. This symposium aims at providing guidance to farmers and policy-makers for a more viable and resilient agriculture.

New research on the History of Chinese gardens and landscapes
Organised by Dr Jan Woudstra in conjunction with the Gardens Trust, the event will look at new discoveries in the field from both professionals and post-graduate students from around the world. Dr Alison Hardie will introduce the conference and outline the importance that Maggie Keswick’s 1978 book The Chinese Garden, History Art and Architecture has played in the subject. It is a unique opportunity to hear speakers from UK and International institutions to present their new research in the field. Talks will cover subjects as wide-ranging as Jesuit water landscapes, gardens as museums, Feng Shui symbolism and botanical watercolours.

Time, Space, and Power in Qualitative Research on the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) Region and Europe
Since the start of the 21st century seemingly unpredictable change, in all its different guises, has fueled the preoccupations of academic and non-academic publics. The financial crisis, the “Arab Spring”, protest movements in southern Europe, the rise of Daesh and right-wing populism, as well as the environmental crisis all make it very difficult to rely on Francis Fukuyama’s theory of “end of history”, which now seems to merely reflect the euphoria of liberal elites following the collapse of the Soviet Union (1992). This workshop intends to reflect more closely on the webs of power affecting both the researcher and‚ the researched when they intend to represent change.

Le désert du Sahara, les régions du Sahel et du Sinaï, sont autant d’exemples d’étendues mobiles, fébrilement animées par les flux mouvants qui les traversent. Loin de l’image courante d’espaces vides et inanimés, ces territoires sont l’objet d’une attention particulière et sont intégrés au processus de mondialisation. Gestion des réservoirs d'eau souterraine, exploitation des hydrocarbures et des ressources minérales, augmentation des migrations, présence de groupes armés et conflits territoriaux sont autant d’enjeux prenant place au cœur de ces régions arides. Ces questions d'ordre économique et énergétique, humain et environnemental sont intimement liées aux représentations géopolitiques de ces espaces et présentent ainsi un aspect sécuritaire important.

South Asian Diasporic Cinema: Encounters
The fourth issue of /DESI/ will focus on the question of encounters in diasporic South Asian cinema: Afghanistan, India, Maldives, Pakistan, Bangladesh Nepal and Sri Lanka. The transformation of this contemporary human condition into filmic material coincides with a turn in the scientific study of diasporas. Forced migrations, which generate a movement of displacement and settlement in home territories, movements of arrivals, caught in a logic of deterritorialization, diasporas – and more particularly South Asian diasporas – are all relocated in transnational and transcultural spaces. Cinema holds a mirror to this experience of movement through this new “ethnoscape” (Appadurai) made up of shifts and disjunctures, free flows and political hurdles, border-crossings and assignment of identity.

Appropriating Space in Colonial and Imperial Contexts
Ce colloque international interroge les phénomènes d'appropriation de l'espace dans des contextes coloniaux et impériaux contemporains (XIXe-XXe siècles). Si l'approche privilégiée ici s'affranchit des découpages en aires culturelles, elle est aussi résolument transimpériale : les études de cas qui seront présentées et discutées renvoient à une grande variété de terrains (Amériques, Russie, Inde, Indochine, Nouvelle-Calédonie, Afrique, Moyen-Orient, Maghreb). Il s'agira ainsi d'explorer les articulations concrètes entre jeux d’acteurs et transformations spatiales à travers une série de sessions thématiques : entre-deux / sciences et territoires / mémoires et imaginaires / négociations et coproductions / concurrences et conflits / se réapproprier, traduire, s’affranchir.

This phenomenon, commonly from physical geography to social geography, is extended to other bifurcations (subdivision of geography, tools, etc.) during the manipulation of the triptych Territory-Development-Environment. Other social sciences are invited to share their experiences of the space with geographers.

Competition and solidarity networks in contemporary South Asia's Labour Market
Hegemonic neo-liberal discourse assumes that free competition on all levels sparks a virtuous cycle of economic growth, which eventually trickles down to poor populations. Over the past three decades, the idea that restrictive labour laws hamper such competition has justified the deregulation of labour in the North and the un-regulation of labour in the South, notably in South Asia, where labour relations had already mainly been informal. Various sociologists have noted that intensified economic interactions and the rise of competition have made individuals more likely to activate their social networks to protect their individual interests. In this respect, to what extent do social networks shape relations in the diverse South Asian labour markets? How do new forms of social groupings reconfigure competition and solidarity relations? What forms of social interactions prevail, emerge and weaken in the market: chosen solidarity and inherited solidarity; inter-caste and intra-caste solidarity; class solidarity; corporate solidarity etc.?

À la mort d’André-Leroi-Gourhan, professeur au Collège de France, en 1985, Alain Testart, anthropologue directeur de recherche au CNRS, fut l’un des rares à poursuivre en France la fructueuse et difficile collaboration entre archéologie, notamment préhistorique, et l’ethnologie ou, plus largement, l’anthropologie. Après la disparition d’Alain Testart en septembre 2013, la coopération entre ethnologie et ce qu’Alain Testart résumait comme « avant l’histoire » en France est non pas à réinventer mais à réactiver. Cette collaboration est nécessaire parce qu’elle est productive et riche de potentiel et de conséquences probables. Celles-ci intéressent tout aussi bien l’ethnologie que la paléontologie et l’archéologie, fournissant à cette dernière de nouveaux modèles explicatifs ou simplement éclairants, de nouvelles hypothèses de reconstruction sociale pour les sociétés disparues, les sociétés primitives au sens propre.

Since 1998 the “Association des jeunes études indiennes” (AJEI) organizes an annual workshop in India with the support of international and local partners. This year, we propose a three-day event in Goa to debate the question of the “commons” in contemporary South-Asia. The workshop will be structured around different thematic sessions with the presentations of the works of the participants, a field visit and an open discussion on fieldwork methods. One of the main objective of the event is to give the opportunity to the participants to exchange on their works and their experience, to get feedbacks from senior researchers and to build relationships, reinforcing thus the strong international network of researchers on South Asia.

L’ambition de ce numéro d’Ebisu est de porter un regard renouvelé sur ce qui fait ville, sur qui fait la ville et comment se façonne l’espace urbain dans le Japon du XXIe siècle. Il s’agit aussi d’intégrer d’autres approches : les urbanistes (architectes, géographes et sociologues) se retrouveront naturellement dans cet appel, mais une ouverture pluridisciplinaire est nécessaire pour traiter de cet objet aujourd’hui universel. Ainsi, en complément de contributions traitant des acteurs de l’urbain, des modes de vie, des formes et de la maîtrise de la ville, nous souhaiterions voir questionner, par exemple, la poétique des villes japonaises du XXIe siècle, l’esthétique qu’elles génèrent au cinéma ou dans les jeux-vidéos, ou encore la manière dont la littérature s’empare de la ville japonaise contemporaine

What kind of development for “the post-crisis city”?
Des grandes villes dans le monde ont connu des épisodes traumatiques de fortesampleurs, marquant durablement ces espaces et leurs populations. Ces événements, parfois sources de transformations majeures des zones touchées, peuvent également révéler ou se faire le relais de mécanismes de crise plus profonds. À travers quatre axes de discussion (morphologie et composition des nouveaux tissus urbains, fabrication de marges sociospatiales, moteurs et pratiques du développement économique, citadinité et pratiques urabines), le colloque propose d'aborder les conséquences de ces périodes traumatiques sur les dynamiques urbaines, en interrogeant le rôle de la crise et son importance entant que facteur de causalité des évolutions récentes qui marquent ces villes.
