Avoiding violence, the construction of peace and historical memory

    Philosophical issues of customary law

Amílcar Cabral: The “Anonymous Fighter” for the Mankind Fundamental Freedoms

In 1971, Amílcar Cabral presented himself in the United Nations (UN) as an “anonymous fighter” engaged in the struggle for the fundamental freedoms of the populations of Guinea and Cape Verde, as well as of all mankind. Such affirmation was not casual, since Cabral adopted the status of “anonymous fighter” in other circumstances, arguing that he was struggling for the human dignity, progress and happiness. The main goal of the conference is to bring together academics studying Cabral trajectory, institutions involved in preserving his memory and personalities which became acquainted with him.

Wars and political violence in modern European and American societies (19th-21st century)

    “Amnis” Journal

Amnis Review seeks to open up a reflection on the synergies that exist between war and political violence – both real and symbolic – and to ascertain to what extent the two phenomena are interlinked as well as how far they can be regarded as an essential area of research for gaining an understanding of the historical processes at work during a given period. To this end, Amnis proposes a long-term study focused on the contemporary period in order to analyse not only the impact of conflicts, such as the two world wars that left their mark on the 20th century, but also the consequences of the many civil wars, colonisation wars and the various other types of confrontations that have punctuated the history of European and American societies from the 19th century to the present.

Family Migrations and Uses of Law

Actors, Norms and Regulation within International Families' Movement

In the last decades, international migrations have significantly influenced family structures. Individuals migrate to rejoin their spouse or family; some have to juggle between the law of their country of origin and of their country of residence to divorce; others give birth to a child in a country where they have no right to reside. Minors are adopted or legally taken, others are conceived abroad (surrogacy mothers, medically-assisted procreaction), some are forced or invited to leave their country. This symposium aims at filling existing gaps in this highly topical field of research, regularly approached either by a disciplinary entry, or by employing the regulating action of law. On the contrary, this symposium investigates several other perspectives assumed by the law and the plurality of actors concerned by it.

The social connection through the perspective of the circulation of goods, people and capital

    Singleton chair 2017

The “gift” is one of the most enduring theoretical concepts in social sciences. Its primary meaning (understood as ‘giving without expecting reciprocation’) has evolved over many years of debate, particularly in anthropology. This idea has been discussed through many types of transactions, such as exchange, transmission, collaboration, cooperation, offering, sacrifices, ... This symposium has been created to take a new look at the relationship between goods, people, and capital in circulation. With great care taken to avoid too exclusively theoretical debates, the colloquium will focus on detailed descriptions of fieldworks and empirically founded data. It will also favour socially, historically or culturally situated analysis.

The politics and poetics of museology

    40th annual ICOFOM symposium

It has become rather banal to speak of the museum as a place of power. Whether one refers to it as media, as medium, or as device, we must understand that this institution, emblematic of occidental civilization, has always aroused the interests of local political régimes, whatever they may be. The creation of the British Museum and the birth of the Louvre illustrate the many different ways the public has of seeing the links between knowledge and collections. Furthermore the advent of each new political régime (from democracy in America to the Marxist-Leninist system in the Soviet Union, passing by fascist Italy and national-socialist Germany) marks museums with its imprint, as well as its system of communication, preservation and research.

Land and territory around the Adour
