The resilience of European port cities: crisis and reinvention (16th-21th)
Port cities have often radically reinvented themselves, a testament to their resiliency (i.e. their capacity of resistance and their ability to recover from disruptive events). This bilingual conference (French/English) put an emphasis on papers dealing with crises and reinvention in a comparative fashion. It is open to historians and to other social scientists who adopt a historical viewpoint, in particular geographers, specialists of areas studies, sociologists, urbanists, anthropologists, and researchers employed in museums and archival centers.

Objet utilitaire mais également d'apparat, le textile se caractérise par l'ancienneté de sa mise au point, la persistance de sa production, la place sans cesse renouvelée qu'il occupe dans nos sociétés successives. Cette activité économique a fortement et anciennement marqué certains territoires, particulièrement en France qui est, au début du XXe siècle, le deuxième producteur mondial. La tradition textile est forte dans les trois territoires qui composent la nouvelle région Grand Est comme le rappellent lieux de médiations d'une part et entreprises industrielles d'autre part.

L’objet de ce colloque est de mettre en évidence l’ancienneté de l’emprise urbaine des hôpitaux dans la ville, mais aussi du lien entre ces espaces de soin et d’assistance et les sociétés urbaines.

En 2017, le colloque annuel du Comité d’histoire régionale, service de la Région Grand Est, réunira donc des spécialistes de différentes disciplines (histoire, archéologie, histoire de l’art, géographie, droit, sociologie, économie, histoire des techniques, etc.) et d’acteurs actuels du monde du textile pour traiter de ce thème.

In addition it aims to investigate how these ties influenced, successfully or not, their settlement process: the daily life, the research of a job or a house, the access to credit networks, to poor relief or to other urban resources etc...

6th summer school of economic history
The topic of the the sixth economic history summer school will enable us to continue and deepen the themes developed over the past few years (the value of things, poverty, common goods, means of payment and quality). While work involves acting on material things, its organization implies a reflection on the property of things, the relationships with time, discipline, control and know-how. On the part of governments, it also requires information that makes it possible to reflect on the state of economic life as well as on all the conflicts endemic to society, to be able to work out legal and practical devices that are necessary for the constitution of a particular knowledge. It also finally questions issues around technical training and the command of various forms of know-how, in contexts that sometimes place some rival systems in a competing situation.

Working overtime: longer working hours
La nouvelle revue du travail journal issue no. 11
The first issue of the Nouvelle Revue du Travail focused on changes in the temporality of work and how this affected work and workers while highlighting the fragmentation of time at work. Between France’s January 17th 2003 Fillon law and August 6th 2015 Macron “Economic growth, activity and equal opportunity” law, the incremental weakening of the country’s 35-hour workweek laws translated into longer working times, accompanied by a general policy of extending peoples’ working lives by requiring them to pay into their pension pots for a longer period of time. Hence the decision taken in this 11th research strand to focus on the extension in working time.

The notion of “low-costing” - which can refer to a production process or finished product – is difficult to define. The term is also applied in a geographic sense, referring to the cheapness of a country’s workforce. This semantic confusion is one of the reasons it is worth focusing on the construct and analysing its growing importance, notably in the Western world.
