  Archives, heritage and digital humanities (2017-2018 seminar)

  Ce séminaire vise à ouvrir une réflexion collective au croisement des humanités numériques et de l’histoire de la justice. Il répond à un besoin de partage d’expériences en matière de constitution de corpus, de recherche, de valorisation du patrimoine et d’édition numérique. Notre objectif est de favoriser les échanges entre les différentes disciplines de la recherche appliquée à l’histoire de la justice, mais aussi entre les différents métiers (des archives, des musées, de la documentation, de l’enseignement, du numérique, de la médiation…) qui concourent à la diffusion dans l’espace public des sources et des savoirs sur le droit et la justice.

  Le séminaire Ciné-danse : art en mouvement se propose, au fil de ses quatre journées de séances thématiques, d'analyser l'art de la ciné-danse à partir de divers angles et de creuser son histoire riche et complexe. Premier séminaire francophone de cette envergure, l'événement souhaite proposer un point de rencontre entre les spécialistes de la discipline - ceux qui ont l'habitude de théoriser et d'analyser les chorégraphies pour l'écran - et les non-spécialistes qui enrichissent l'étude de la ciné-danse avec leurs connaissances en provenance de la sociologie, de la littérature, de la danse, du cinéma et d'autres disciplines (photographie, histoire, philosophie, etc.)

  Archives, the Digital Turn and Governance in Africa

  “History in Africa” Journal

  This featured section of History in Africa will address the wave of digitisation of archives in Africa over the last fifteen years. With the rise of information technologies, an increasing part of public – and to some extent private - African archives are being digitised and made accessible on the internet. This wave of digitisation is usually seen as a progress with the help of ambitious initiatives applying new technologies to cultural heritage of humanity such as the rescue of the manuscripts of Timbuktu or the Endangered Archives programme at the British Library. Yet as much as these new technologies raise enthusiasm, they also prompt discussions amongst researchers and archivists, which go from intellectual property to sovereignty and governance.

  Mega-data in the social sciences

  The Brexit, Donald Trump’s election, and the alleged interference of Russian hackers mark a turning point in the relationship between the Internet and social science research. The failure of media, analysts and opinion polls to predict the outcome of two crucial democratic consultations is challenging the research methods used since the end of the Second World War. Between the researcher and the data he/she collects there is a space of indeterminacy where suspicion looms. On the one hand, it’s said that we’ve entered the era of electronic democracy: the citizens express themselves freely in the international media. On the other hand, one becomes aware that a certain part of the contents accessible on the Web are actually produced by software; the data would tell us nothing about citizens’ opinions and sentiments.

  A government of prediction?

  The politics of modeling and computing for policy

  The aims is to putting in discussion the modes and effects of the use of computational tools in government and public policies. Computation, be it based on statistical modeling or newest techniques of predictive analytics, holds the promise to be able to anticipate and act infallibly on futures and uncertain situations more generally. That the future is an object of governmental knowledge and action is nothing new though. So, what is the characteristic of today’s relationship with futures in policy making and action? To what extent do the means of computation – from statistical models to learning algorithms employed in predictive analytics — change this relationship, and the collective capacity and legitimacy to engage with future, uncertain situations? Do technologies of prediction change policies and their politics and, if so, how?

  UDPN seminar (the uses of digitised heritage) (2016/17)

  Au cours de cette deuxième session du séminaire annuel du réseau Usages des patrimoines numérisés, les séances seront organisées dans un souci de développer des approches qui puissent être utiles dans une perspective d’initiation et de formation aux pratiques des humanités numériques et aux questionnements épistémologiques et méthodologiques non seulement auprès des doctorants et chercheurs mais aussi auprès de professionnels du patrimoine. Il s’agit d’envisager différents types de matériaux, de méthodes et de démarches au travers d’expérimentations et de réalisations techniques et pratiques issus des projets UDPN afin d’envisager leur prolongement et extension.
