Knowledge, power and duties within a finite planet
The advent of the Anthropocene concept and Earth system sciences – putting forward upscaled temporalities in the public sphere, the dramatization of warnings on planetary limits and boundaries and on the human impacts of climate change – provide a challenging context for the humanities and social sciences. Cropping up these developments and at the crossroad of world and connected histories, environmental history, human geography and social, political and legal studies, the conference will examine how ideas of a global, unified and limited earth played a role in human reflexivity, and how the “right use” of the Earth as a whole has become, and is increasingly becoming, an object of knowledge making and government practices.

La Fondation Maison des sciences de l’homme (FMSH) et l’Institut français de Pondichéry (IFP) proposent à des postdoctorants ou à de jeunes chercheurs résidant en France, une aide à la mobilité pour réaliser un séjour de recherche de 2 ou 3 mois en Inde. Seront soutenus des projets de recherche qui s’inscrivent dans la politique scientifique de l’IFP, en synergie avec ses chercheurs ou ses partenaires indiens. Les séjours visant à initier des projets scientifiques collaboratifs avec les partenaires de l’IFP en Inde seront également considérés. Les projets interdisciplinaires sont bienvenus.

Limits of the western police model in China
In the past 20 years, the Research Center on Shanghai History (ECNU) and the Lyon Institute of East Asian Studies (IAO) have established close cooperative relations : joint projects, joint publications, joints conferences, as well as the co-training of graduate students have become significant and regular markers of increasingly close relationships. On this basis we hope to further co-promote Shanghai and Tianjin as centers of new urban history and social order. This project will avail new archival materials (municipalities archives), memoirs of policemen, photography, illustrated journals, correspondances, police reports etc…

Academic days on open government and digital issues
Since 2011, experiences of member countries of OGP have shown that, although civil society is largely associated with the process of open governments, the academic community has not been adequately consulted. It is important to emphasize that the university community must be part of the open government process. The concept of “Academic Days” was never experienced in previous events of the OGP. By hosting this event with IMODEV and University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, has been organized the first time a scientific congress dedicated to issues of open government, and willing bring together academics - regardless their disciplines - to enable the discussion of these issues through a scientific approach.

Le séminaire examine les questions éthiques, épistémologiques, politiques, philosophiques portée par le courant transhumanisme. Le séminaire, portée par la chaire « Ethique et Transhumanisme », propose cette année de conduire ses réflexions sur deux axes principaux. En premier lieu, il s'agit de penser les questions éthiques, politiques et épistémologiques que posent l'intelligence artificielle et les algorithmes. En second lieu, ce sont les oppositions et tensions existant au sein du mouvement transhumaniste qui feront l'objet de plusieurs examens.

Science meets society roundtables at the University of Lyon
Le but de cette rencontre est de permettre aux enseignants-chercheurs, chercheurs et chercheuses, doctorant.e.s qui travaillent au sein des laboratoires de recherche de l’Université de Lyon d’exposer leurs recherches, de discuter de leurs orientations méthodologiques, de découvrir la variété de leurs productions scientifiques, de faire connaître leurs projets. Nous sommes convaincus que de telles rencontres permettront une meilleure connaissance des recherches en cours au sein de l’Université de Lyon, et favoriseront des synergies et des coopérations nouvelles dans les domaines de la recherche et de l’enseignement. Les rencontres sont centrées sur les relations entre sciences et société. Cet objet de recherche mérite d’être précisé, tant il est polymorphe et tant il est investi par des projets académiques et politiques variés. Les travaux visés sont ceux qui portent sur les façons dont les savoirs scientifiques sont élaborés,circulent, sont mobilisés et critiqués en société. De nombreuses disciplines des sciences sociales contribuent à ces analyses, à partir d’outillages méthodologiques et conceptuels variés (sociologie, droit, science politique, histoire, géographie, économie, linguistique, etc.).

Conflicts, practices, prospects
In light of recent attacks against the freedom of research, we seek to reassess and reflect on the right to this freedom today, in a global context. Taking into account the punctual, tendential or structural nature of the attacks against this right, we focus on its current situation, its personal and collective practices as well as the networks and associations supporting it, and its political prospects. We adopt an encompassing, grounds-up and agonistic understanding of the freedom of research, which includes forms of journalistic, artistic and civic inquiry as well as academic research, situating it in a web of social, political and economic interrelations, and stressing the importance of understanding it as a contested right and a tool in conflict rather than simply an entitlement supposedly guaranteed by any “non-authoritarian” State.

Pour clôturer un cycle de trois années de recherche, le séminaire s'intéresse aux mobilisations collectives qui prennent le corps comme objet de revendication. Les chercheur-es invité-es s'interrogeront sur la façon dont des collectifs institutionnalisés ou non interpellent l’État et les médias à travers des mobilisations collectives, des manifestations ponctuelles ou durables, et des techniques militantes pour orienter l'organisation sociale de la transformation du corps. Ces mobilisations et mouvements sociaux portent sur les normes d’apparence, les assignations identitaires, les modes d’existence, le traitement des corps et les droits de la personne.

Gender and contraception: what kind of (r)evolutions?
This event aims to explore the “(r)evolutions” that the diffusion of contraception in the world has generated. It also intends to acknowledge the renewal of research on contraception and abortion through the integration of a gender perspective. The material and legal access to methods and knowledge on fertility control might have led to changes in power relations in different social spheres. Considering contraception today leads us to, among other things, questioning representations of procreative autonomy and gender equality.

Understanding and stimulating social sciences and humanities impact and engagement with society
Training school
This training school provides participants with insights into the theories and practices of stimulating impact creation from social sciences and humanities research. It will focuses on three specific dimensions. Firstly, creating a conceptual understanding on the specificities of social sciences and humanities (SSH) impact and non-linear impact models. Secondly, alternative appropriate policy frameworks for maximising SSH impact. Finally, we will explore ways of supporting scholarly practices to optimise the creation of impact through SSH research, and capturing this with evaluation systems.

Medicine through the microscope
Les savoirs médicaux sont de plus en plus souvent soumis à l'épreuve de la délibération. Réunions de concertations pluridisciplinaires sur des clas cliniqes, comités éthiques dans les hôpitaux, commission des agences sanitaires, groupes de travail pour l'élaboration des recommandations médicale, expertises collectives ou réunions de synthèse entre équipes médico-sociales : les espaces dans lesquels des collectifs discutent de la médecine se multiplient. Qu'ils traitent de situations individuelles ou statuent sur des normes générales, édictant parfois des recommandations et des orientations, ces espaces ont en commun de répondre à une demande d'expertise et de mobiliser des savoirs scientifiques, au premier rang desquels les savoirs médicaux. Ils répondent également à une double exigence de participation (convoquer les parties prenantes de la question traitée) et de délibération.

Philosophy, epistemology, politics
L’objectif de ce colloque est d’explorer les spécificités de l’« impureté » du théoriser féministe, toujours en commerce avec son dehors, ainsi que ses manifestations au sein des modèles épistémologiques des différentes disciplines, en abordant plus particulièrement la philosophie et la science politique. Les contributions pourront aussi bien porter sur un travail d’élaboration de concepts nécessaires à une recherche empirique prenant le genre en considération que sur la reprise et l’amendement d’un modèle théorique ou d’une méthodologie héritée dans une perspective féministe ; elles pourront également développer une réflexion sur les spécificités du rapport féministe à la théorie dans les champs de la philosophie ou de la science politique. Le colloque est pluridisciplinaire ; toute proposition est la bienvenue dans la mesure où elle porte non (directement et seulement) sur un terrain et des résultats empiriques, mais sur un travail de théorisation ou sur la théorisation.

Hispanic studies at the Sorbonne - how an institute has reacted to change over the century
Organisé à l’occasion du centenaire de l’Institut d’études hispaniques de l’université de Paris (1917-2017), ce colloque international se propose de réfléchir sur la place qui a été accordée, tout au long du XXe siècle, aux langues et aux cultures ibériques et ibéro-américaines dans le monde universitaire parisien. La réflexion engagée embrasse l’histoire de l’hispanisme parisien depuis ses débuts, en 1906, où fut créée la première chaire d’Espagnol à la Faculté des lettres de l’université de Paris, jusqu’à la fin des années soixante, où naquirent d’autres universités, dont la « Sorbonne-Nouvelle ». Outre l’étude du contexte historique qui favorisa la fondation et la consolidation de l’Institut d’études hispaniques, dans le cadre des relations diplomatiques hispano-françaises, on s’intéressera aux échanges intellectuels ayant accompagné l’essor de l’hispanisme en France et dans d’autres pays.

15th Annual Conference of the International Medieval Society-Paris (IMS)
In the wake of the US presidential election and the Brexit referendum, the Oxford English Dictionary chose the expression “post-truth” as its word of the year. This expression underlines the growing tendency to dismiss objective facts in favor of impulsive—and often prejudicial—feelings, frequently supported by “alternative facts.” The contentious relationship between the truth and lies, or truth and fiction, which is currently playing out in the public arena has, in fact, a long-standing legacy—one which can be traced back to the Middle Ages. For this reason, this year’s IMS conference seeks to investigate the variety of different approaches to truth and fiction that existed in the Middle Ages.

Corporate authority in the shaping of public policy
The power of corporate business has been a subject of intense debate and many social science studies since the 19th century. This conference is based on the idea that, not only has this power varied among industries, countries and different periods, but also that the way in which it is wielded has evolved over time. By bringing together scholars from various backgrounds within the fields of history, sociology, and political science, we intend to provide new insights on the multiplicity, depth and limits of the forms of influence that corporations, or the organizations furthering their interests – business associations, think tanks, communication or public relations agencies, foundations, etc. –, have on public policy.

L’Institut national du cancer (INCa) vient de publier l’appel à projets libres annuel de recherches sur le cancer en sciences humaines et sociales, épidémiologie et santé publique. La place des sciences humaines et sociales, de l’épidémiologie et de la santé publique (SHS-E-SP) dans la recherche sur le cancer a été confirmée par le plan cancer 2014-2019. Plusieurs mesures stratégiques du plan adossent leurs objectifs aux progrès qui doivent être apportés par la recherche en SHS-E-SP.

European Space Agency's Space History Conference
There is more to space than rocket science. Historians, diplomats, economists, law students, political scientists and sociologists have all contributed to our understanding of the space age and its impact on our societies over the past decades. Sixty years on from the placing of the first human-made object in orbit around Earth, space is now an integral part of our daily lives. Space science and technology are projects for the whole of humankind, reaching not only outside Earth’s atmosphere, but also beyond our Solar System. While the technological and scientific challenges of working, living and travelling in space motivate students to pursue such studies, the impact of space activities on our lives on Earth, on relations between nations and organisations, and our collective recent history, provides fertile ground for students and scholars in the humanities to take up space-related subjects.
