Populations facing Ebola

Cette journée vise à présenter et discuter des analyses ethnographiques à propos de l’épidémie d’Ebola de 2014-2016, à développer une réflexion inter-équipes sur les maladies épidémiques émergentes, et à échanger avec des chercheurs en sciences sociales d’institutions françaises et européennes pour renforcer les perspectives de collaborations en réseaux. Elle comprend deux parties : la première partie scientifique est consacrée au thème « Des populations à l’épreuve d’Ebola » ; la seconde partie est une table-ronde sur les conditions du développement d’analyses anthropologiques face aux épidémies.

La Société sénégalaise de philosophie (SOSEPHI) organise les 20, 21 et 22 décembre 2017 une conférence internationale pour rendre hommage à Souleymane Bachir Diagne. Nous sollicitons des articles abordant un aspect de son œuvre ou un thème voisin. Après une carrière distinguée au sein du département de philosophie de l’université Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar, Souleymane Bachir Diagne enseigne depuis une quinzaine d’années aux États-Unis d’Amérique d’abord à la Northwestern University de Chicago puis à la Columbia University de New York. Souleymane Bachir Diagne a développé au cours des années une œuvre philosophique multiforme et influente que ce soit à l’étranger ou au Sénégal.

C’est une Afrique à la croisée de la théorie et de la pratique scientifique occidentale que est proposée comme objet d’étude du 5 au 7 février 2018 à l’université Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar. Dépendante d’une périodisation structurée à la fois par des mutations scientifiques et l’évolution des contextes historiques, l’Afrique des savants européens n’est pas une mais multiple. Les contextes politiques et idéologiques influent sur les motivations et les résultats de la recherche scientifique.

This featured section of History in Africa will address the wave of digitisation of archives in Africa over the last fifteen years. With the rise of information technologies, an increasing part of public – and to some extent private - African archives are being digitised and made accessible on the internet. This wave of digitisation is usually seen as a progress with the help of ambitious initiatives applying new technologies to cultural heritage of humanity such as the rescue of the manuscripts of Timbuktu or the Endangered Archives programme at the British Library. Yet as much as these new technologies raise enthusiasm, they also prompt discussions amongst researchers and archivists, which go from intellectual property to sovereignty and governance.

Now more than ever, gender as an analytical concept is being heavily contested from diverse quarters inside as well as outside academia. The panel discussion addresses key questions of how to teach gender as critical theory in the light of current societal and political tensions on the one hand and institutional constraints inside the university on the other hand. How can we teach “critique”? What does teaching gender mean in terms of methods and topics? And how can we engage in critical research and teaching while responding to societal expectations as to relevant output and knowledge transfer?

This monthly seminar will aim to invite researchers to come and present their work in progress or recently published that address the “Arab mathematics”, understood in a broad sense to be studied not only mathematics itself, but science “mathematized” of the era, such as astronomy, optics and static; Furthermore, we do not restrict themselves to only written in Arabic mathematics, but we can address their writings in other languages extensions, like Latin, Hebrew and Farsi.
