  Pervasive powers

  Corporate authority in the shaping of public policy

  The power of corporate business has been a subject of intense debate and many social science studies since the 19^th century. This conference is based on the idea that, not only has this power varied among industries, countries and different periods, but also that the way in which it is wielded has evolved over time. By bringing together scholars from various backgrounds within the fields of history, sociology, and political science, we intend to provide new insights on the multiplicity, depth and limits of the forms of influence that corporations, or the organizations furthering their interests – business associations, think tanks, communication or public relations agencies, foundations, etc. –, have on public policy.

  European Space Agency's Space History Conference

  There is more to space than rocket science. Historians, diplomats, economists, law students, political scientists and sociologists have all contributed to our understanding of the space age and its impact on our societies over the past decades. Sixty years on from the placing of the first human-made object in orbit around Earth, space is now an integral part of our daily lives. Space science and technology are projects for the whole of humankind, reaching not only outside Earth’s atmosphere, but also beyond our Solar System. While the technological and scientific challenges of working, living and travelling in space motivate students to pursue such studies, the impact of space activities on our lives on Earth, on relations between nations and organisations, and our collective recent history, provides fertile ground for students and scholars in the humanities to take up space-related subjects.

  Final conference of the European Project Interco-SSH

  The program, lead by the CNRS (France) and funded by the European Union Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/20072013) under grant agreement n° 319974 (Interco-SSH) is coordinated by Gisèle Sapiro (CNRS, EHESS, Cessp). It gathers seven partner institutions: CNRS, France; Alma Mater Studiorum Università di Bologna, Italy; Cambridge University, UK; Erasmus University Rotterdam, Pays Bas; University of Graz, Austria; John Wesley Theological College, Hungary; National Scientific and Technical Research Council, Argentina.

  La constitution disciplinaire des sciences humaines et sociales en Grèce aux XIXe et XXe siècles. Traditions nationales et mouvements transnationaux

  XXVe congrès des néo-hellénistes des universités francophones

  Le congrès biennal des néo-hellénistes francophones se tiendra du 12 au 14 octobre 2017, à Aix-en-Provence. Il vise à rassembler des chercheurs dans tous les domaines des sciences humaines et sociales. La question qui sera au cœur de ce XV^e congrès portera sur le processus de constitution disciplinaire des sciences humaines et sociales en Grèce, depuis la création de l'État en 1830, dans une perspective qui nous permettra d’étudier ce phénomène sous sa double dimension, régionale et internationale.

  Norbert Elias, sociologue de la connaissance et des sciences

  L’objectif de cette journée d’études sera double. Il s’agira, d’abord, de retracer l’histoire de cet investissement, inséparable, chez Elias, d’une réflexion plus générale sur la spécificité de la sociologie par rapport à la philosophie et à l’histoire. Il s’agira, ensuite, de profiter de sa position « dominée » et du caractère décalé de ses propositions pour éclairer l’émergence et le développement de la sociologie de la connaissance et des sciences entre les années 1920 et 1980.
