The heritage of Frantz Fanon in the arts and American literature

Study day 1

Les journées d'étude « Héritages de Frantz Fanon dans les arts et la littérature des Amériques » visent à analyser la portée de la pensée et du style fanoniens dans les productions artistiques et culturelles des Amériques. Cette démarche apparaît comme une nécessité épistémologique, tant en raison de l'attachement de Fanon à la création et la défense d'une culture nationale qu'en raison de son propre soin apporté à l'écriture et de son intérêt manifeste pour la littérature. Cette première journée, qui se tiendra à l'Université de Tours, portera plus spécifiquement sur la question de la circulation des théories et sur les traces de Fanon dans la littérature et les arts visuels.

El proyecto nace con la necesidad de recordar lo mucho que ha aportado la Hélade tanto en la literatura española como en la hispanoamericana, deudoras ambas de la tradición clásica, no sólo desde la intrínseca unidad que se crea entre mito y literatura, sino desde la filosofía clásica y la producción poética y narrativa en general.

Desplazamientos epistémicos, identitarios y estéticos

Retomando los conceptos de José Luis Brea sobre una «epistemología política de la visualidad» que supone el campo ampliado de los estudios visuales, esta jornada de estudios internacional se propone poner en discusión la función del arte en la actualidad en relación a la separación radical y la separación relativa entre éste y la política, la ciencia, la comunicación, la posmedia, etc. La visualidad enunciada, frente a la visualidad aludida, negada, disfrazada o transgredida. Las relaciones entre lo visible y lo decible, los juegos de saber y poder, la postura decolonial (Mignolo y Quijano) que suponen todas las relaciones antes mencionadas, son algunos de los aspectos que conforman las discusiones sobre las políticas de la visualidad que nos interesa abordar tanto desde el terreno académico como desde el campo de la praxis artística.

Five Centuries of Cultural Influence

Generations of scholars have studied the multi-faceted experiences of the Franciscans in Mexico and the ways in which the Franciscan order shaped New Spain and the early Mexican republic. This conference examines the range of Franciscan influence and analyzes new scholarship that focuses on the multiple discourses with which friars engaged native peoples, creole populations, the vice-regal authorities, and other actors throughout the Spanish empire. The conference brings together junior and senior scholars to study the long Franciscan experience in Mexico on the eve of the commemoration of the quincentenary of the Spanish — and thus the Franciscan— presence in Mexico.

Les autrui comparatifs du Québec ne sont donc pas choisis au hasard. Ce sont des autrui significatifs, avec qui le Québec entre en relation dans l’espoir de mieux se dire, de mieux se faire. Qui sont les autrui significatifs du Québec, hier et aujourd’hui ?

Le numéro 11 de Líneas, « L’âge des minorités », s’attachera à la question des minorités en Espagne et en Amérique latine. Feront l’objet d’un intérêt particulier la relation entre minorités et États nationaux, empires et peuples mineurs, mais aussi les minorités juridiques ou celles au sein de la famille. Seront également bienvenus les articles s’intéressant aux courant artistiques ne visant pas tant à s’émanciper dans le passage de la minorité à la majorité, mais à provoquer une rupture avec la norme majoritaire et à affirmer ce « devenir-minoritaire » promu par Deleuze et Guattari dans leur Kafka, pour une littérature mineure.

Insights on the Americas

For its 11th issue, RITA proposes to interrogate the links between power and media in the Americas. Several areas of debate can be suggested, although they should not be considered as exclusive. Articles making a critical analysis of official media as well as opposition media, in varied historical and geographical contexts, will of course be welcome. Other articles may deal with the treatment of popular movements by the media. Critical reflections on the relationship between media and economic power are also encouraged. The Thema section can also include analysis of the current diversification of information media by focusing, for instance, on the emergence of “alternative” media on the Internet, or on the power of fake news over the construction of collective representations.

“Literary Offenses” and Other Contentious Matter

This one-day conference will address the subject of controversial or polemical texts such as reviews, essays, letters, prefaces and/or postfaces published between 1800 and 1900 in Britain and the United States. It seeks to open fresh approaches to controversies or polemics by focusing on literature and the literary aspects of these questions. Indeed, if controversy can be defined as a debate between two or more parties with different viewpoints before an audience, studies have mainly come from the fields of social sciences and science studies, with some interest in rhetoric and/or argumentation. However, literary controversies are as important as scientific ones for the constitution of the public, democratic debate as it was shaped in Britain and in the U.S. in the nineteenth century. Controversies and polemics contributed to legitimizing some literary genres; they gave publicity to new or avant-garde authors; they redefined the content and contours of the public debate.

La première journée d’études, consacrée à la période de l'après-seconde guerre mondiale ainsi qu’aux espaces ou territoires postcoloniaux, s'est déroulée le 14 novembre 2016. Cette seconde journée, « Les revues dans le monde : entre-deux-guerres », traite de l'avènement au sein des territoires non-occidentaux d'une internationale critique, caractérisée par une mise en tension entre désir d'émancipation, lutte contre l'impérialisme et spécificité culturelle.

Knowledge translation on a global scale (Asia-Europe-the Americas, 16th - 20th century)

The aim of this workshop is to contribute to the discussion about the complex and multi-faceted interactions engendered in the translation of knowledge between cultures across space and time, as well as the aspects inevitably involved in the process of both its transmission and reception. The contributions address the translation of concepts, also examining the lexical changes initiated by the influx of new or foreign knowledge, and that of practices, i.e. concrete examples to be found in the process of translating knowledge, which in turn entails its interpretation and adaptation.

This workshop aims to provide an opportunity for an explicitly international audience of scholars to reflect on the societal impact of Neo-Thomism, especially in the domains of law and socio-economic thinking. This is a topic deserving a multifaceted and in-depth analysis, using a broad, international comparative perspective and combining the results of very different fields of historical research: history of science, church and religion, social and political history, etc.
