This interdisciplinary conference discusses the cultural role of European folding fans in art, fashion, and material culture in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The conference aims to take a closer look at the pictorial and intermedial interplay of or- namental patterns, figurative elements, and artistic subject matters against the background of European fan manufacture, artistic net- works and international trade. Furthermore, it seeks to closer examine fans as gender-specific instruments of gesture and communication.

The international and interdisciplinary symposium "Dance and Nations: identities, alterities, boundaries" is a scientific meeting organized within the framework of the of the HdD (Hermeneutics of Dance research program, directed by Arianna Fabbricatore),. Il brings together a team of scholars to question how theatrical dance evolves in the European social and cultural space. Its purpose is to discuss the different aspects related to the circulation of dance in Europe and to open up research on the semiotic, political and social issues of dance as a sign, expression or representation of the permeable bounderies between cultural identities.

Perspectives and resistance - performances, archives and the extras of history
La journée d’étude rassemblera un groupe de chercheurs (enseignants, étudiants) historiens du spectacle, de l’esclavage et des arts vivants. L’objectif est d’explorer, au plus près des sources, des archives et des images, la mise en scène des regards (des acteurs, des spectateurs comme des chercheurs) sur ce qui résiste, désoriente, se déplace dans des performances aux traces infimes, disparues ou à reconstruire. La journée d’étude permettra d’interroger le rôle des figurants dans l’histoire.

Visual and textual representations of the act of donation in the arts in the early modern period
Cette rencontre ambitionne d’étudier l’acte de donation au cours de la première modernité, un acte que l’on envisagera comme forme de communication et comme acteur du lien social. C’est plus précisément la mise en scène du don d’œuvres d’art et d’objets que l’on souhaite interroger. Car pour pouvoir participer pleinement de l’affirmation d’un statut ou d’un pouvoir, cet acte suppose un espace de visibilité et de représentation, assurant sa publicité au sein d’une communauté. Deux axes de réflexion complémentaires seront privilégiés : celui des mécanismes visuels, rhétoriques et littéraires qui participent de la mise en scène du don ; et celui de ses effets au sein des dynamiques relationnelles qu’il institue.

Stratégies visuelles de la scène de bataille de la Renaissance à nos jours
Comment les artistes depuis la Renaissance ont-ils mis en espace ou en séquence temporelle le récit guerrier de manière à susciter une expérience du regard, voire une expérience physique de l’événement chez le spectateur ? De la peinture de la Renaissance au cinéma contemporain, ce colloque entend retracer la mise en images de la bataille selon différents médiums, en étudiant l'ambition politique, voire éthique, de cette immersion visuelle dans l'événement militaire.

The reception of Swiss art in the context of the eighteenth-century European Grand Tour
In 2018, a special issue of the Zeitschrift für Schweizerische Archäologie und Kunst (ZAK) will be dedicated to Swiss art in the eighteenth century. Focusing on the context of European travel culture, the issue will address the various ways in which Grand Tourists perceived, purchased, and collected Swiss art objects during and after their travels. This perspective will help to gain new insight into the distribution and reception of Swiss art in eighteenth-century Europe.

State-Rooms of Royal and Princely Palaces in Europe (14th-16th c.)
Spaces, images, rituals
From the fourteenth to the sixteenth century, European monarchies saw a gradual centralisation of power. This was accompanied by the dissemination of political ideas that contributed to the making of a new image of the prince, which relied on visual instruments to assert and construct the prince’s sovereign power. Royal and princely residences with their designated state-rooms were at the centre of this phenomenon. Their decors, particularly during ceremonies, reflected political interests and ambitions that were essential to the image of the prince. By placing a particular emphasis on the decor of those state-rooms, this workshop aims to increase our insights into the relations between the architecture, decoration, and rituals of monarchical power in state-rooms from the late middle ages to the beginning of the early modern period.

Visions of history - the visual writing of time
L'écriture visuelle du temps
Ce colloque entend questionner la généalogie des imaginaires individuels et collectifs des époques qui se condensent en autant d'« identités visuelles ». À travers le cinéma, la bande dessinée, la photographie, le jeu vidéo, l'illustration, les manuels scolaires, la télévision, la littérature pour enfants ou encore les objets commerciaux et les publicités, les images de l'inactuel investissent sans cesse les clichés du temps et performent de nouveaux traits et repères de périodicité. Cette rencontre reviendra sur différentes approches historiennes des études visuelles et sur les rapports entre temps et image qu'elles impliquent.

Cette cinquième journée d’études des jeunes chercheurs du LASLAR (Lettres, arts du spectacle, langues romanes) sera donc consacrée à la réflexion sur ces chemins de traverse empruntés par les créateurs (auteur, metteur en scène, réalisateur), en insistant sur leur figuration au sein des œuvres elles-mêmes. Penser le récit – littéraire, dramatique ou cinématographique – paraît fécond pour mettre au jour les aléas de la création, et leur inscription dans les œuvres littéraires, les pièces de théâtre et les films.
