Young researchers association at the Centre de recherche sur les médiations (2017-2018)
L’Association des jeunes chercheur·e·s du Centre de recherche sur les médiations (CREM) rassemble des doctorant·e·s et des jeunes chercheur·e·s du CREM, ainsi que des étudiant·e·s des masters adossés à l’unité de recherche. Elle propose des séminaires présentant des travaux en cours (articles, communications, thèses) et, par ses manifestations, elle valorise les projets scientifiques de ses membres, leur permet d’acquérir des compétences nécessaires à la recherche et développe un réseau d’associations de jeunes chercheur·e·s en sciences humaines et sociales.

Migrations in the culture sector
Les migrations des artistes s’inscrivent de manière diverse dans la carrière et s’accompagnent de conditions de travail qui varient selon la place occupée. A partir de deux recherches portant sur des contextes différents nous aborderons l’exercice concret de cette migration en lien avec l’activité de travail. La migration se joue entre pays pour les musiciens de musique classique de l’Europe de l’est vers le Brésil. Elle se joue plus comme une circulation au sein de réseaux plus locaux à Madagascar pour les musiciens aux répertoires locaux ethniques mais aussi à dimension internationale.

Territorialising the history of immigration - city, region and diasporas
Au cours de ces dernières années, l’intensification des flux migratoires en Méditerranée a été un sujet d’inquiétude et de tensions. Face à cette absence de vivre-ensemble, il est intéressant d’analyser l’intégration de ces populations immigrées d’hier, d’aujourd’hui et de demain pour expliquer ce repli identitaire. Observer la territorialisation de l’histoire de l’immigration devient alors une nécessité ainsi qu’une manière de décentrer la question nationale. À l’heure de la répartition des migrants dans les régions, cette perspective peut apporter une réalité plus nuancée que celle énoncée dans les médias. Pour cela et à travers ces deux jours de colloque, il s’agit de faire se rencontrer les approches historiques, sociologiques, géographiques, mais aussi les expériences de terrain des acteurs associatifs, politiques ou culturels.

Ce panel se propose d’analyser la contribution des migrations internationales dans la reconfiguration des dynamiques de citoyenneté dans les Afriques méditerranéenne et subsaharienne notamment en : interrogeant la transformation des initiatives citoyennes des migrants, au niveau individuel et collectif ; interrogeant les pratiques au niveau local des migrants en articulation et/ou en opposition avec les attentes des acteurs politiques.

The representation and memory of migration
Le colloque se propose d’envisager selon différentes perspectives les conditions, les formes et les effets de la représentation et de la mémoire de la migration. À partir d’analyses de l’histoire et du présent il s’agit d’étudier selon quels modèles, traditions et perspectives les différents pays négocient la migration et l’intégration, et quelles discussions nationales suscitent la mise en visibilité des histoires migratoires ainsi que les défis spécifiques qui y sont corrélés.

The Black Metropolis, between past and future
Race, urban planning and African-American culture in Chicago
The colloquium will celebrate the centenary of the “Great Migration” and explore the social and cultural life of Chicago South Side and West Side from the end of the Thirties, which were marked by the cultural zenith of Bronzeville neighborhood and a series of measures for the Black community inspired by the New Deal, to the present, which is characterized by numerous private and public initiatives in favor of an urban renewal. This international and multidisciplinary colloquium seeks to reevaluate the contribution of the South Side and the West Side to the definition and evolution of the African-American identity from the beginning of the XXth Century until the contemporary moment.

Il rapporto Chiesa e società nelle aree europee degli Imperi di Spagna e Portogallo e nell’America spagnola e portoghese intende gettare uno sguardo sullo sviluppo e sulle caratteristiche di questo variegato rapporto tanto nel Vecchio quanto nel Nuovo mondo. Particolare attenzione sarà attribuita alle fonti documentarie inedite o poco studiate in grado di aiutarci ad aprire nuovi percorsi di ricerca per capire la funzione pastorale ed evangelizzatrice della Chiesa, ma anche le luci e le ombre di un clero non sempre orientato al bene dei poveri. Sarà importante analizzare come la Chiesa, attraverso le sue strutture, si sia organizzata e radicata nella società sia in Europa sia in America Latina.

Catégorisations et représentations
Les phénomènes migratoires, contemporains ou historiques, ont été à l’origine de la production d’un lexique varié soumis à des modifications et des évolutions dépendant du locuteur et du contexte. Les mots, à cet égard, sont révélateurs d’imaginaires collectifs denses et diversifiés, ils jouent un rôle – jamais neutre – aussi bien dans des processus de catégorisation que dans des processus de représentation. La dénomination interroge ainsi la façon dont nous nous représentons migrations et individus en migration aux différents stades de leurs parcours.

These days communication and information are characterized by immediacy, speed, and interactivity. Facebook and Instagram accounts, YouTube channels, and blogs transmit a perpetual flow of information, shared videos, pictures, and other content which creates networks and incentivizes sharing in a constantly evolving language. Contemporary mass media therefore ensures that, today more than ever, people in African countries are at the same time autonomous producers and users of a debate, through partly traditional, partly innovative channels, about life in Africa and African communities’ identity, with a tale that travels across the borders of individual countries and the continent itself.

Les chercheurs exerçant dans un des pays d’Afrique Centrale ou de l’Ouest sont invités à présenter leur expérience dans leur domaine de recherche, en insistant sur les questions d’éthique et d’équité en lien avec leurs propres travaux de recherche.

Post-soviet diaspora(s) in Western Europe (1991-2017)
Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, millions of former soviet citizens crossed the national borders in search of better lives in new countries, in what was the biggest migration tide since the end of World War II. These Post-Soviet migrants were diverse in origins, strategies and expectations. They often represented a challenge to the orthodox views of migration processes, since in most cases these flows could not be easily described and analysed following commonly accepted theoretical frameworks. Everybody seemed to be on the move: labour migrants, political refugees, cross-border traders, “tourists” planning to forget their return... and in a short period, they spread all over Western Europe.

"Imaginary homelands": South Asian Literatures in diaspora
Le projet DELI (« Dictionnaire encyclopédique des littératures de l’Inde ») organise le 7 décembre 2017 à la Maison des sciences de l’Homme sa cinquième journée d'étude. Intitulée « Littératures d'Asie du Sud en diaspora », cette journée d'étude vise à interroger la nature des phénomènes littéraires découlant des diasporas sud-asiatiques, récentes ou plus anciennes. Cette journée d'étude est organisée avec le soutien du Centre d’études de l’Inde et de l’Asie du Sud.

Comparative Perspectives on Urban Diversity from the Gulf and Beyond
This conference aims to revisit the notion of cosmopolitanism in Gulf cities and other regional areas from a comparative perspective. It will be a unique opportunity for scholars of the Gulf and other world regions to engage with cosmopolitanism or otherwise probe the intersection of global studies, urban studies and migration studies from a range of disciplines. More specifically, panels will be organized around the following research themes:“cosmopolitan canopy”, cosmopolitanism in theoretical and comparative perspectives, new geographies of cosmopolitanism in Gulf cities.

Border Textures: Interwoven Practices and Discursive Fabrics of Borders
2nd World Conference of the Association for Borderlands Studies - Panel
In view of the current political developments in Europe, the scientific study of borders has increasingly gained importance. Cultural Studies has reacted to these developments by generating complex and more and more detailed theories and tools for describing and analyzing border phenomena. Cultural border studies champion approaches which do not examine spatial, material, temporal or cultural aspects in isolation but investigate their intersectional and performative interactions. This panel provides a space for explorative investigation of potential approaches for cultural border studies, focusing on interactions between material and immaterial manifestations of the border.

2nd World Conference of the Association for Borderlands Studies - Panel
The societal events of the last decade have challenged Border Studies more than ever before. This can be seen not only in the field’s growing institutionalisation but also in its developments in research: these include the relativization of geopolitical perspectives by cultural studies approaches, the spatialisation of the border concept (e.g. zone, third space, exter/internalisation etc.), the decentralisation of the border in favour of processes (e.g. b/ordering, othering etc.), the pluralisation of the border concept (e.g. walls, differences, (dis)continuities, demarcations) or the complexification of the border (e.g. scapes, textures). The panel is treating these developments and other turns as an opportunity for a long-overdue self-examination, which in the light of the resurgence of borders seems necessary from both a societal and scientific perspective.

Making art in an emergency situation
Cette université d’été a deux objectifs. le premier est d'explorer un secteur mal étudié de l’ethnologie comme la musique dans les camps de transit. S’il existe une abondante littérature historienne et musicologique sur la musique dans les camps de concentration et dans les camps d’extermination, rares sont les études qui portent sur les pratiques musiciennes. Le second objectif est de construire une démarche comparative afin de mesurer la singularité d’une observation ponctuelle sur ce que l’on appelle la crise des migrants en Europe : Paris, Baigorri, Calais, Dunkerque (France), Friedland (Göttingen, Allemagne), M’Bera (Mauritanie), Mentao (Burkina Faso), Zaatari (Jordanie).

South Asian Diasporic Cinema: Encounters
The fourth issue of /DESI/ will focus on the question of encounters in diasporic South Asian cinema: Afghanistan, India, Maldives, Pakistan, Bangladesh Nepal and Sri Lanka. The transformation of this contemporary human condition into filmic material coincides with a turn in the scientific study of diasporas. Forced migrations, which generate a movement of displacement and settlement in home territories, movements of arrivals, caught in a logic of deterritorialization, diasporas – and more particularly South Asian diasporas – are all relocated in transnational and transcultural spaces. Cinema holds a mirror to this experience of movement through this new “ethnoscape” (Appadurai) made up of shifts and disjunctures, free flows and political hurdles, border-crossings and assignment of identity.

La journée d’études « Cultures, arts et littératures périphériques dans le Brésil contemporain » se propose, par une approche interdisciplinaire, d’interroger les notions de périphérie / centre, marges, frontières dans ses modalités artistiques variées dans le Brésil hyper contemporain. Il s’agit notamment d’identifier, de comparer et de croiser ce phénomène et ces productions artistiques périphériques dans d’autres villes / espaces brésiliens.
