La revue Réseaux prépare un numéro thématique portant sur les machines prédictives. Il voudrait porter à la discussion scientifique des travaux relatifs à la place croissante prise par les décisions algorithmiques engageant des prédictions sur l’avenir.

Journal transition from subscription model to open access

Serial crisis, sky-rocketing subscription prices as well as more and more widespread and powerful OA mandates have pushed many publishers to rethink the finance of publishing the journals. Considering a switch calls out numerous challenges but it is a path more and more travelled – and importantly so an economically – sustainable and one with long-term benefits – not only for readers, but also for authors and the journal owners, too. In 2014 De Gruyter converted 14 journals to OA – this webinar looks at overarching strategies for journal transition from subs to OA – including current OA publishing landscape and single factors (like managing submissions, citations and funding) that play a role during the process. Is it worth it? Who will foot the bill? What to expect? And how to bring the EAB on board? The introductory one-hour webinar is built around three sections to allow participants to work out the flipping strategy for their publication and to timely and reasonably plan the change.

Le déploiement des objets et usages numériques dans notre vie affecte notre humanité. Face à ces mutations, est-il possible d’élaborer un cadre favorisant l’émergence d’un humanisme numérique ?

Training school

This training school provides participants with insights into the theories and practices of stimulating impact creation from social sciences and humanities research. It will focuses on three specific dimensions. Firstly, creating a conceptual understanding on the specificities of social sciences and humanities (SSH) impact and non-linear impact models. Secondly, alternative appropriate policy frameworks for maximising SSH impact. Finally, we will explore ways of supporting scholarly practices to optimise the creation of impact through SSH research, and capturing this with evaluation systems.

La question des temporalités concerne à la fois l’évolution des réseaux comme structures sociales, l’évolution des entités qui les composent, et celle des relations (moments d’émergence, de renforcement ou d’affaiblissement, d’interconnexions, et éventuellement de rupture des liens). Comment évoluent des systèmes relationnels ? Comment rendre compte des dynamiques complexes qui les animent ?

A government of prediction?

The politics of modeling and computing for policy

The aims is to putting in discussion the modes and effects of the use of computational tools in government and public policies. Computation, be it based on statistical modeling or newest techniques of predictive analytics, holds the promise to be able to anticipate and act infallibly on futures and uncertain situations more generally. That the future is an object of governmental knowledge and action is nothing new though. So, what is the characteristic of today’s relationship with futures in policy making and action? To what extent do the means of computation – from statistical models to learning algorithms employed in predictive analytics — change this relationship, and the collective capacity and legitimacy to engage with future, uncertain situations? Do technologies of prediction change policies and their politics and, if so, how?

Perspectives and issues for researchers

S’il n’existe pas de définition canonique de l’open science, elle peut toutefois être définie comme un mouvement d’ouverture appliqué à l’ensemble des facettes du processus de recherche. L’open data, l’open peer review ou encore l’open access constituent ainsi autant de modalités de production et de diffusion de la recherche au service de l’open science. Les modalités d’évaluation des chercheurs continuent de mettre l’accent sur l’activité de publication dans les revues. Toutefois, les initiatives en faveur d’une recherche plus ouverte et plus transparente se multiplient. Comment ces pratiques peuvent-elles s’inscrire dans l’écosystème de la publication ? Quels sont les enjeux et les prérequis pour une recherche plus transparente ? Quelles réponses les chercheurs des disciplines à forts enjeux économiques peuvent-ils notamment apporter ?
