The hydraulic system is an architectural subsystem that can only be understood in view of the dual constitution of its structure: one at ground level, that referrers to potable water (lower hydraulic subsystem), and other concerning rainwater (upper hydraulic subsystem). They both involve aspects of major importance for the functioning of any building: catchment, distribution and evacuation of the waters. In the last decade, research was carried out on the hydraulic component of historical architecture, either religious or civil, considering technical and artistic issues, not only in Portugal, but throughout Europe.

La época del espacio. Estado y nuevas perspectivas

A lo largo de la segunda mitad del siglo XX se produjo una reorientación de la mirada humana y del interés científico, que pasó a observar y a observarse más en el espacio que en el tiempo, como ya había ocurrido anteriormente. En los últimos años, ha crecido enormemente el interés por el estudio de las creaciones artísticas, especialmente literarias, poniendo el foco en la simbología o la relevancia de los lugares. El crecimiento de disciplinas como las mencionadas puede ser percibido a través de su contacto con otras disciplinas emergentes, como las humanidades digitales, también de reciente aparición. La simbiosis entre ellas ha dado lugar a las humanidades espaciales o al deep mapping, entre otras. Sin embargo, más allá de las nuevas metodologías o procedimientos, internet y el desarrollo de la informática también han generado nuevos hábitats, nuevas espacialidades, que nos obligan a reformular el "nido" bachelardiano y el modo en que construimos identidades en el espacio. ¿Cómo han evolucionado estas teorías en los últimos años, qué ha cambiado en nuestra concepción del término o cómo vivimos o nos relacionamos con el territorio?

Llamado a candidaturas para cátedras del Institut des Hautes Études de l’Amérique latine (2019-2020)

Depuis plus de dix ans, l’Institut des hautes études de l'Amérique latine (IHEAL) attribue chaque année des chaires à des enseignants et chercheurs étrangers travaillant sur l’Amérique latine dans le domaine des sciences humaines et sociales. Mises en place grâce au ministère de l’Enseignement supérieur et de la Recherche français, ces chaires s’inscrivent dans le cadre de la politique française de coopération scientifique avec cette région du monde. Elles permettent à l’IHEAL de tisser des liens avec de nombreuses universités latino-américaines et de consolider un large réseau scientifique.

Mujeres de las Américas

El reconocimiento del lugar que ocupan las mujeres en las sociedades americanas se ha convertido en una cuestión fundamental en los ámbitos social, cultural, político y económico. Algunos movimientos reivindicativos se han hecho visibles en la escena internacional, como así lo prueban el Ni una menos iniciado en Argentina – movimiento feminista que lucha contra los feminicidios y la violencia de género – o incluso las «Marchas de mujeres» contra el presidente Donald Trump en los Estados Unidos. Estas problemáticas ponen en evidencia una forma de continuidad entre las luchas y expresiones feministas del pasado y sus reactualizaciones en el espacio público: ya se trate de las luchas para conseguir el derecho al voto, de la revolución sexual nacida en los años sesenta o de los movimientos sociales que denuncian la violencia de género en los medios urbanos y rurales.

African Ivories

In the Atlantic World, 1400-1900

Since April 2015, the international team working on the project “African Ivories in the Atlantic World: a reassessment of Luso-African ivories” (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia: PTDC/EPH-PAT/1810/2014), composed of 27 researchers from the University of Lisbon, the University of Évora and the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil, has been researching the trade, circulation and production of raw and carved African ivory in the Atlantic area from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century. The team has identified and listed objects from Portuguese and Brazilian (Minas Gerais) collections, also collecting references and descriptions extant in written Portuguese sources. For the first time a selection of ivory pieces was subjected to lab tests with a view to helping establish their age and origin. The project research team has submitted proposals for re-interpreting material culture in the framework of its African contexts of production.

Insularities and enclaves in colonial and post-colonial circumstances

Crossings, conflicts and identitarian constructions (15th - 21st centuries)

Historically, archipelagos were considered as rehearsal spaces for new social constructions. Since colonization and, afterwards, colonialism and imperialism, many of them evolved in association with the strengthening of international networks, while others did not escape isolation and forced unequal integration in different spaces. On the other hand, enclaves were the outcome of historical circumstances, often externally decided, which prompted some degree of insularity regarding the immediate geographical surroundings. When those territories did not become independent, there were demands for autonomy or, at least, some underlying emancipatory and anti-colonialist feelings. Even when these feelings did not mobilize relevant segments of the population, they disclose the alterity – above all cultural – in regard to sovereignty.

Publication of books in e-book format

Centro Interdisciplinar de História, Culturas e Sociedades (CIDEHUS) has a collection of books with peer review: Biblioteca: Estudos e Colóquios – intended to the publication of monographic works. This collection has an international scientific committee and an editorial committee, in addition to an adviser. Every year, this collection makes an open call to the academic community in general and not only to the members of CIDEHUS for publication purposes. This is the 2018 call. The works, however, will almost assuredly only be published in 2019.

L'objet de ce colloque consiste à analyser la variété des mises en forme kinésiques, énonciatives et figuratives de la mémoire entendue telle une représentation actualisée du passé, au sein des espaces dits lusophones. Puisque qu'à l'acte commémoratif (que nous entendons basiquement par une pratique d'épaisseur mémorielle), en tant qu'il est souvenir c'est à dire image du passé, est joint l'opération remémorative d'une inscription ontologique dans la durée. C'est à dire la conscience d'une continuité historique entre des états d'être ontologiquement différenciés. Ainsi l'acte commémoratif est à la fois le double, l'actualisation et la représentation de ce qui a été (à commencer par l'acte commémoratif lui-même et ce à quoi il réfère).

Herencia cultural y archivos de familia en los archipiélagos de la Macaronesia

En la última década, varias líneas de investigación en historia y archivística están lanzando sugerentes investigaciones acerca de la construcción de los archivos y de las fuentes históricas. Estas nuevas corrientes en el campo de la archivística histórica y la epistemología de la historia han planteado la revalorización de los archivos de familia, no sólo como repositorios de fuentes documentales alternativas a los archivos institucionales de la Iglesia y el Estado, sino también como objeto de estudio en sí mismos, debido al particular contexto de creación y transmisión del archivo familiar, construido al margen de los espacios formalizados del poder político-institucional de su tiempo. Esto hace de los archivos de familia un patrimonio común cuyo valor trasciende a la dimensión histórica y envuelve a toda la sociedad, pues resultan especialmente interesantes como expresión de identidades, memorias y discursos históricos plurales.

KISMIF Conference 2018 will be preceded by a Summer School entitled ‘What difference do DIY cultures make?’ (KISMIF Summer School 2018) on 3 July 2018 in Faculty of Arts and Humanities of University of Porto. The summer school will offer an opportunity for all interested persons, including those participating in the conference, to attend workshops led by specialists in these fields. Specifically, the Summer School offers thematic workshops expressly focused on the hands-on, music making, and place making of contemporary DIY cultures. Its approach will be methodological and focused on research for action.

KISMIF conference 2018

We are pleased to announce the fourth “Keep It Simple, Make It Fast!” (KISMIF) Conference which will take place in Porto, Portugal, between 3 July and 7 July 2018. This initiative follows the great success of the three past editions and brings together an international community of researchers focusing on underground music scenes and do-it-yourself culture. The 4^th edition of KISMIF will focus on “Gender, differences, identities and DIY cultures”, directing its attention on gender issues relating to underground scenes and do it yourself (DIY) cultures, and their manifestation at local, translocal and virtual levels.
