Ambrogio Spinola: between Genoa, Flanders and Spain
Networks and Narratives, War and Finances (1569-1639)
This international workshop proposes a collective work at the crossroads of the different economic, political, family, military and cultural networks which constituted the changing and complex context of the life of Ambrogio Spinola, a man of immense fortune and unknown military qualities. His framework? Italy, Flanders, Spain. Scholars with different, although complementary, historiographical approaches will gather around Spinola, aiming to publish a collective biography in 2020. This biography will be the result of an interdisciplinary work, mixing the knowledge of historians of the military, diplomacy, aristocracy or economics, but also using the history of news (creation and circulation), written and pictorial culture, or gender history.

An interdisciplinary dialogue between maritime historians and archaeologists
This conference will close a four-years French-Taiwanese research project (ANR/MOST) on Maritime Knowledge for Asian seas (seaFaring), which propose to reconsider, and possibly to review, our knowledge on China’s seafaring tradition through a new approach focusing on the practical know-how available to the craftsmen, seamen and merchants during the 16th-18th centuries, with special emphasis on sailing and trading knowledge and practices.

The economy of stone in the Meuse valley and surrounding regions (1st century BC - 18th century)
The first edition of conferences dedicated to stone economics during the historical periods, which was held in Nancy in 2015, underlined the vitality of the research carried out about this subject, as illustrated by the recent works led in Lorraine. The Stone by Stone series of meetings aim to promote the relevance of stone economics research and to facilitate discussions about the topic, through a cycle of international conferences held every three years. The upcoming Stone by Stone II Symposium will be held in Namur and Dinant in December 2018. It will be co-organized by the University of Namur (AcanthuM – ILEE), by the University of Louvain-la-Neuve (UCL), by the University of Brussels (ULB/VUB), by the University of Lorraine, by the INRAP and by the Maison du Patrimoine medieval mosan, and by the AWAP (Agence wallonne du Patrimoine).

En 2018 on commémore le IXe centenaire de la mort du comte Don Pedro Ansúrez, celui qui repeupla la ville de Valladolid et figure marquante de la politique ibérique à la fin du XIe siècle. À l'occasion de cet anniversaire l'Instituto Universitario de Historia Simancas invite les spécialistes à participer au congrès international sur la vie et l’époque du compte Ansúrez. La réunion scientifique se réalisera les jours 21-23 février à la faculté de philosophie et lettres de l'université de Valladolid.

European Society for Environmental History 10th Biennial Conference (2019)
This panel - epidemics, climate and history – for the European Society for Environmental History 10th Biennial Conference in Tallinn (2019) aims to explore specific climatic/environmental and institutional factors that shaped both the way in which plagues lato sensu and other epidemics, including cholera, yellow fever, typhus, typhoid fever, leprosy, syphilis, etc., originated and spread as well as the consecutive significant demographic and socio-economic consequences at a local or regional scale throughout history (without geographical limitation). A particular attention will be given to original interdisciplinary approaches linking natural proxy archives and written documentary sources.

Engineers and enterprises - 19th-20th centuries
La question des rapports entre ingénieurs et entreprises est au centre des préoccupations des écoles qui les forment, des entreprises qui en emploient et des réseaux qui les fédèrent. Face aux mutations en cours aujourd’hui, l’histoire permet de prendre un recul en observant d’autres moments, en suivant d’autres basculements d’époques, en analysant d’autres façons de résoudre des problèmes comparables. Cette journée d’études cherche ainsi à explorer les multiples liens entre ingénieurs et entreprises au cours des XIX et XXème siècles : innovations, nouvelles techniques d’interventions ou mise au point de nouveaux produits, direction de procédés techniques, installation de dispositifs, formation aux logiques des entreprises, formation à la recherche d’entreprise, parcours d’ingénieurs. Au total, les différentes communications proposées permettront d’aborder un aspect encore trop délaissé par l’historiographie.

Coins and currency in the 10th and 11th centuries
Issuing authorities, political powers, economic influences
The 10th-11th centuries were crucial for the history of France. The centralized Carolingian state gave way to the regional principalities. Why this happened and how it affected society are core questions for historical research. The study of coins has a huge potential to contribute to this debate. Contrary to written documents, they survive in thousands. Contrary to other archaeological artefacts, coins are struck by official decision, reflecting the “state”. They are more closely datable them most other artefacts. Coins also circulate widely in many spheres of society, reflecting trade and economics.The conference Coins and currency in the 10th and 11th centuries takes advantage of this leap forward to reopen the debate. The aim of the conference is to bring numismatists, archaeologists and historians together in order to confront their ideas for the mutual benefit of historical knowledge.

This workshop will be the occasion for historians of thought, economists, econometricians, social scientists, specialists in economic methodology or epistemology, and economic or environmental historians to discuss about the articulation between theories, models and facts (broadly speaking) in the past and present environmental and energy economics literature. Prof. Arthur Petersen (UCL) will give a plenary talk about the interdisciplinary dialogue for the elaboration of Integrated Assessment Models. A roundtable will also be taking place with three eminents scholars: Roger Guesnerie (Collège de France), Kirsten Halsnæs (DTU) and Jean-Charles Hourcade (CNRS-CIRED). Around 20 presentations by young and senior scholars from Europe and America are expected, including preliminary results from the #BNREproject.

A global history of free ports
Capitalism, commerce and geopolotics (1600-1900)
Exactly how free ports arose in early-modern Europe is still subject to debate. Livorno, Genoa and other Italian cities became famous as major examples of a particular way of attracting trade. Between the late eighteenth and the nineteenth century the existence of free ports – as specific fiscal, cultural, political and economic entities with different local functions and characteristics – developed from an Italian and European into a global phenomenon. While a general history of free ports – from their first emergence to the present-day special economic zones – has never been written, this research network aims to pave the way for such an enterprise. The history of free ports research network is organising a number of conferences in the next years, in order to work towards a standard publication and interactive research platform for the history of free ports from the XVIth to the early XXth century.

La journée d'étude « La fabrique de l’habit » propose de réfléchir à la production de vêtements et d’accessoires de mode à l'époque moderne, avant que le déclin puis la fin des communautés de métiers, l’apparition des grands magasins et l'essor de la confection ne marquent l'avènement d’un système productif nouveau au XIXe siècle. L’objectif de cette journée est de réunir autour de cette thématique jeunes chercheurs et chercheurs confirmés, archéologues, conservateurs, restaurateurs et praticiens du textile afin de dresser un état des lieux des apports de l’historiographie récente et des recherches menées actuellement au sein des universités, des musées et des laboratoires.

The notions of declassification and reclassification
Les pratiques de classement et de taxinomie dans l’Antiquité gréco-romaine ont été bien étudiées. En revanche, les processus de déchéance, déclassement et de réhabilitation ou reclassement associés, ont moins retenu l’attention des antiquisants, à l’exception peut-être de la damnatio memoriae, notion déjà décrite par les Anciens. Il ne s’agit pas, au cours de cette manifestation scientifique, d’analyser les processus classificatoires, ni les groupes qui en découlent en tant que tels, – elles ont notamment fait l’objet de deux contributions dans le récent volume, Classement, déclassement, Reclassement, Gilles Chabaud (éd.), Limoges 2011– mais plutôt d’aborder, dans une approche inversée, ce qui motive les Anciens à rejeter ou mettre à l’écart d’un regroupement préalable, en d’autres mots à déchoir un objet, une personne, un espace, une pratique, d’une position préalablement bien établie et reconnue de tous.

“FinLux” is a series of seminars held on a monthly basis and focusing on the history of the Luxembourg financial centre. The fundamental theme of the seminars is a reflection on which topics, actors, sources, and methods can be used to write the history of the Luxembourg financial centre. From its inception, the C²DH has decided to make the history of the Luxembourg financial centre one of its main research priorities. 'Finlux' is a place for researchers to discuss ongoing research projects in banking and financial history in a broad sense.
