Gender, health and masculinities: post-colonial historical perspectives
Parmi les études de genre en histoire, de nombreux travaux se sont consacrés depuis les années 1990 à la masculinité et à la virilité. Ces recherches ont sans doute eu le mérite, entre autres, de défaire un clivage qui considérait l’histoire des femmes comme le seul objet de recherche ; et d’enrichir l’historiographie d’interprétations qui permettaient par ailleurs de sortir les femmes d’une infériorité sans agency, problématisant donc aussi une approche qui les pensait comme des figures passives d’une histoire essentiellement masculine. L’histoire du genre a permis, de surcroît, de souligner que les hommes sont aussi victimes d’une pensée dichotomique du masculin versus féminin qui les assigne constamment à une définition normée de la masculinité et de la virilité.

What emotions have to do in the History of Humanitarian Images?
Taking the title of Susan Sontag’s seminal work as a starting point, this workshop aims at re-opening an old debate about the potentialities of exhibiting other’s suffering in order to promote a culture of peace, prevent war and/or resolve conflict. In this workshop we would like to propose considering the importance of images (not only photographs, but also drawings as well as motion pictures) within the long-term history of humanitarianism, in order to explore the role of emotions in shaping and mobilising public opinion. More particularly, we encourage scholars to think about the ways through which humanitarian images affect us as material objects that have expressive effects related to the circuits, places or circumstances in which they are exhibited.

The logics of the inventory: classifying archives, books, objects (Middle Ages - 19th century)
Ce colloque s’intéressera de façon non restrictive aux pratiques et aux gestes de mises en ordre qui donnent lieu à un document, que celui-ci soit un inventaire, un répertoire, un catalogue, un index (indice), etc. Parallèlement à ce dont témoignent les inventaires, les organisatrices de ce colloque invitent les participant-e-s à une réflexion critique, à une lecture « en creux » des pratiques de mises en ordre.

The logics of the inventory: classifying archives, books, objects (Middle Ages - 19th century)
The conference will investigate all sorts of practices related to any document that can non-restrictivly be regarded as an inventory, catalog, index, etc. Inventories are indeed established and used in particular contexts. Each proposes its own particular classification and order, though not always explicitly, so that any ordering and structuring of archives, books or objects deserves to be considered as an innovative and creative action.

Gendering Humanitarian Knowledge
Global Histories of Compassion from the Mid-Nineteenth Century to the Present
The conference invites scholars to think about the notion of "humanitarian knowledge" in a multidisciplinary way, by combining perspectives such as gender history, the histories ofemotions and the body, literary and visual culture studies, global health history, as well as the history of institutions and their agents. All of them are useful to explore the transnational networks through which humanitarian practices and ideas have been promoted, disseminated and standardised.The conference brings together scholars interested in working on the history of humanitarian knowledge from a gender perspective. The interventions deal with stories of flesh and blood, which put women’s and men’s humanitarian experiences at their centre, in order to inscribe their local practices within a global history of compassion from the mid-nineteenth century to the present.

Le Département d’Histoire générale met au concours un poste d’assistant-e en histoire contemporaine. Les conditions : 1) être en possession d’une maîtrise ès lettres (avec spécialisation en histoire contemporaine) ou d’un titre jugé équivalent; 2) avoir des compétences linguistiques : français et compréhension écrite et orale de l’anglais et, si possible, d’une autre langue vivante; 3) Avoir un projet de recherche susceptible d’amener à l’obtention d’un doctorat à l’Université de Genève dans le domaine d’histoire contemporaine, de préférence avec une dimension internationale ou transnationale.

Divided memories, shared memories: Poland, Russia, Ukraine
History mirrored in literature and cinema
In Central and Eastern European countries, memorial questions appeared right after the demise of the communist regimes in 1989–1991, revealing long-denied processes. The phenomenon of the rise of repressed memories along with the rewriting of history, and the political uses of the past are noticeable in Poland, Russia, and Ukraine, three countries whose histories are as often shared as their memories are divided. The “memory wars” in which these three states have sometimes been engaged since the end of the 1980s have been the subject of an abundant historiography.

8th study day of the jeunes chercheurs médiévistes de l'université de Genève and the conférence universitaire de Suisse occidentale
Cette année, les Journées d’études proposent une réflexion sur le thème « Vrai, faux, mensonge » au Moyen Âge, dont la conférence inaugurale de Christine Silvi permettra de saisir les problématiques sous-jacentes. Les communicant-e-s tenteront ensuite d’apporter un éclairage nouveau sur ce sujet, en confrontant leurs divers domaines de recherches respectifs – littérature, histoire, philosophie. La vérité est-elle universelle ? Le mensonge peut-il être perçu comme une issue préférable et le faux-semblant comme un vecteur de vérité ? Autant de notions qui seront soumises au regard des différent-e-s intervenant-e-s, afin d’en repenser les frontières subtiles et mouvantes.

Le thème du séminaire de recherche s’inscrit dans le prolongement des travaux sur la culture matérielle. Il s’agira de questionner les objets, leurs aspects matériels, les formes graphiques ou les images afin de saisir leurs potentiels effets sur les manières dont, au fil des siècles, les individus pensent, raisonnent ou réfléchissent. En d’autres mots, une mise forme graphique ou un objet produisent-ils un effet cognitif particulier ? Le séminaire permettra d’explorer, grâce à des cas historiques, anthropologiques, sociologiques, etc. quelques exemples particuliers de matérialité - le graphique, le tableau, la fiche, la liste, le cadastre, la cartographie, le microscope, le télescope, l’écran, etc. - afin de saisir ce que peut produire la matérialité sur la pensée des individus qui la convoquent ou y sont confrontés.
