Thursdays at the German History Institute
2018–2019 Program
Avec ce cycle de conférences, l’Institut historique allemand (IHA) propose des sujets de l’actualité internationale en histoire et en sciences humaines et sociales. Chaque conférence est suivie d’un commentaire et d’un débat afin de faire ressortir les spécificités théoriques et méthodologiques des différentes traditions historiographiques. Les sujets traitent des questions fondamentales de l’historiographie ainsi que des préoccupations actuelles de l’IHA, dont l’histoire intellectuelle, sociale et culturelle de la politique. L’IHA invite les chercheurs et chercheuses venant de tous horizons à participer à ce forum d’échanges où les controverses et les discussions scientifiques concourent à enrichir la pensée et les connaissances.

Pour le 45e congrès annuel de la Société d'Histoire Coloniale Française/French Colonial Historical Society le thème de cette année est : « Ordres et désordes dans l'Empire colonial français », mais, comme chaque année, il est possible d'envoyer des propositions de communications sur d'autres aspects de l'histoire coloniale française.

L'université d'été internationale « Perception et représentation des frontières et des espaces frontaliers au Moyen Âge et à l’époque moderne (IXe-XVIIIe siècle) » s'inscrit dans les renouvellements actuels de la recherche sur les espaces et les examine sous deux angles. D’une part, il s’agit de mettre en lumière les représentations des frontières dans les sources. D’autre part, l’atelier vise à contextualiser les zones frontalières dans leurs interdépendances régionales respectives. Ainsi, on pourra dépasser une approche essentialiste des espaces et prendre en compte leurs caractéristiques propres ainsi que les dynamiques qui les traversent.

The logics of the inventory: classifying archives, books, objects (Middle Ages - 19th century)
The conference will investigate all sorts of practices related to any document that can non-restrictivly be regarded as an inventory, catalog, index, etc. Inventories are indeed established and used in particular contexts. Each proposes its own particular classification and order, though not always explicitly, so that any ordering and structuring of archives, books or objects deserves to be considered as an innovative and creative action.

A global history of free ports
Capitalism, commerce and geopolotics (1600-1900)
Exactly how free ports arose in early-modern Europe is still subject to debate. Livorno, Genoa and other Italian cities became famous as major examples of a particular way of attracting trade. Between the late eighteenth and the nineteenth century the existence of free ports – as specific fiscal, cultural, political and economic entities with different local functions and characteristics – developed from an Italian and European into a global phenomenon. While a general history of free ports – from their first emergence to the present-day special economic zones – has never been written, this research network aims to pave the way for such an enterprise. The history of free ports research network is organising a number of conferences in the next years, in order to work towards a standard publication and interactive research platform for the history of free ports from the XVIth to the early XXth century.

The Semiophores of Slaveries and Trades
7th “Rencontres atlantiques”
Ten years after the opening of the “Bordeaux, the Atlantic trade and slavery” permanent exhibition at the Musée d'Aquitaine, this 7th edition of the Bordeaux Rencontres atlantiques offers to examine the material traces of slaveries and trades in terms of semiophores. Organized by the International Centre for Research on Slavery and Post-Slavery (CIRESC) and the Musée d'Aquitaine, it proposes to study the processes and forms of rewriting and transmission of the history of enslavment and trades based on the gestures involved around and from museum collections and their exhibitions.

The flower, the pig, the flask and the corpse - ecofacts and artifacts in funerary scenography
En archéologie, les rituels funéraires sont toujours complexes à appréhender, à restituer et à comprendre. Les travaux engagés sur cette thématique depuis quelques décennies ont mis en évidence la complexité des cérémonies au sein desquelles la création de la sépulture n’est qu’une étape. Les autres phases du rituel, comme la préparation du corps, le traitement des restes du bûcher en cas de crémation, les rituels funéraires et commémoratifs, sont souvent mal documentés tandis que les substances organiques ont rarement survécu à l’épreuve du temps. Parmi celles-ci, les offrandes biologiques (végétales / florales, alimentaires, cosmétiques, aromatiques, médicinales et magico-thérapeutiques…) posent de nombreux problèmes d’identification et d’interprétation dans le cadre des funérailles ou des commémorations.

Storage: production, accumulation and the redistribution of cereals in the medieval and modern west
Le 40e Colloque de Flaran est l’occasion, pour les historiens et les archéologues, de tenter un premier panorama des problématiques relatives au stockage alimentaire, en particulier céréalier, dans l’Europe médiévale et moderne, en s’attachant aux dispositifs matériels des mises en réserve (des modestes greniers aux zones à silos, des granges villageoises aux entrepôts urbains), ainsi qu’aux techniques de conservation. Ils s’intéresseront en outre à l’emplacement et à l’environnement des structures de stockage. On explorera les formes de prélèvement, de dépôt et de répartition qui ont défini l’organisation des sociétés européennes avant le Marché, tout en alimentant parfois les marchés locaux.

In the Atlantic World, 1400-1900
Since April 2015, the international team working on the project “African Ivories in the Atlantic World: a reassessment of Luso-African ivories” (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia: PTDC/EPH-PAT/1810/2014), composed of 27 researchers from the University of Lisbon, the University of Évora and the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil, has been researching the trade, circulation and production of raw and carved African ivory in the Atlantic area from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century. The team has identified and listed objects from Portuguese and Brazilian (Minas Gerais) collections, also collecting references and descriptions extant in written Portuguese sources. For the first time a selection of ivory pieces was subjected to lab tests with a view to helping establish their age and origin. The project research team has submitted proposals for re-interpreting material culture in the framework of its African contexts of production.

Cette troisième édition s’inscrit dans le prolongement des deux premières journées universitaires sur les enjeux des gouvernements ouverts organisée en novembre 2017, ainsi qu’en décembre 2016 au cours de la semaine pendant laquelle la France a accueilli le Sommet mondial 2016 sur les gouvernements ouverts. Cet événement a pour objectif de réunir l’ensemble du monde universitaire concerné par les enjeux relatifs aux gouvernements ouverts et du numérique en privilégiant une dimension large et pluridisciplinaire.

Connecting Mediterranean and Atlantic History
2nd meeting of the Atlantic Italies Network
The Atlantic Italies Network – a developing network of scholars working on economic entanglements and related cultural phenomena that emerged between Italian-speaking territories and the Atlantic world from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century – aims at examining connections related to European states without colonies as well as their links to sub-Saharan Africa and the Americas and at contributing to current attempts to analyse early modern Italian territories in their global contexts. The second meeting of the network will particularly appreciate papers involving economic dimensions related to shipping, trade and economic interconnections, but we welcome all proposals contributing to our overall perspective.

“Afriques. Historical debates, methods and fields” journal
In this special issue, for the journal Afriques. Historical debates, methods and fields,we wish to ask ourselves how ancient societies represented their own past, or at least the past states of societies which came before them. In other words: what perception, collections, inventories, archaeology, denials, or even destructions, did they perform on their previous pasts? Which continuities or breaks did they believe they had perceived? What did they believe their own elders or ancestors had passed on to them? We are seeking papers which specifically explore the relationships between a past which is doubly past, a present which no longer exists, and our own present.

Cette journée d'étude pluridisciplinaire est consacrée à l'histoire de la magistrature à l'époque du premier empire colonial, dans une perspective d'histoire institutionnelle, judiciaire et d'histoire sociale, dans l'ensemble des colonies européennes de l'époque moderne et au début du XIXe siècle. Etudier les spécificités des anciennes magistratures coloniales dans leurs statuts, leurs carrières, leurs manières de rendre la justice, leur implication dans le système colonial, leurs liens avec la société coloniale, etc. L'histoire de la colonisation passe par celle de ceux qui ont été des acteurs majeurs de ce complexe phénomène historique. Alors que la société judiciaire du second empire colonial (post 1850) a fait l'objet de travaux approfondis, celle de l'ancien régime colonial mérite d'étre étudiée dans une perspective colonialiste.

Spaces, material cultures, and scenographies in Africa before the 20th century
This special issue on continental and insular Africa (including North Africa) aims to discuss relations between urban territoriality and the exercise of power before the 20th century – excluding European-built cities – from an interdisciplinary standpoint, with particular reference to material culture and symbolic systems. It will be published on the journal Afriques. Débats, méthodes et terrains d’histoire.

The aim of the conference is to check to what extent we can write a connected history of messianism and apocalyptics in the monotheistic religions from the 15th to the 17th centuries. The conference is conceived as a framework for discussing hypotheses and exploring possible connections between Islamic, Jewish and Christian believes about the Last Days.
