    Cultural Urban Practices

    Towards spatial and social reconfigurations of cities in the Americas

    The workshop intends to answer these following questions: How do cultural practices produce new uses of public urban space? Do they succeed in reinventing the idea of the common or on the contrary do they produce new forms of stigmatization? The organizers of the workshop also wish to raise a comparative debate on social sciences studies done in Latin America and in North America on the topic of culture and cities.

    Rethinking the History of the Rust Belt since 1945

    This region, stretching from western New York to eastern Iowa, was until the middle of the 20th century the country's manufacturing and industrial heartland. From the Great Migrations that radically transformed its demographics to the weakening of its economic model, as well as the massive struggles waged by local workers and protagonists of the Civil Rights movement, the political and social history of the Rust Bel. By bringing into dialogue the ongoing or recently completed research of doctoral students and junior academics with a view to opening up new perspectives on the history of the Rust Belt, from a range of disciplines (history, sociology, political science, geography), we intend to highlight spaces and actors too often relegated to the margins of this region’s history, despite their having decisively contributed to shaping the contemporary Rust Belt

    Ce projet de colloque, organisé à l'université de Paris-Est Créteil les 20-21 juin 2019, prévoit d'interroger l'objet géographique « Rust Belt » (ceinture de la rouille) sous différents éclairages thématiques, méthodologiques et disciplinaires. Il a pour ambition d’entreprendre un état des lieux de la Rust Belt, dans un contexte fortement marqué par les échéances électorales, entre les élections de mi-mandat de novembre 2018 et les différentes élections, notamment présidentielle, de 2020.

    The fast paced urbanization and mushrooming of metropolitan areas in Africa and the Global South especially in connection with rights and access to basic services, have attracted much attention in the last decades from the public, local experts, decision-makers and international stakeholders. In parallel, other built environments such as emerging small towns, shrinking cities and rural areas are now experiencing important pressures and changes, and are increasingly coming under the spotlight.
