Young researchers study day in Taiwanese studies (2019)
Le principal objectif des Journées jeunes chercheurs en études taïwanaises est demettre l’accent sur les recherches réalisées par les jeunes chercheurs venant d’universités et centres de recherche dumonde francophone. Ces Journées se situent dans le cadre à la fois de leur formation sur les spécificités du terrain taïwanais et d’échanges avec des chercheurs et enseignants familiers de la réalité empirique de Taïwan et qui ont ici le statut d’encadrants.

An interdisciplinary dialogue between maritime historians and archaeologists
This conference will close a four-years French-Taiwanese research project (ANR/MOST) on Maritime Knowledge for Asian seas (seaFaring), which propose to reconsider, and possibly to review, our knowledge on China’s seafaring tradition through a new approach focusing on the practical know-how available to the craftsmen, seamen and merchants during the 16th-18th centuries, with special emphasis on sailing and trading knowledge and practices.

Care in foreign climes in the 19th century (Europe, Atlantic and colonial worlds)
Le XIXe siècle, temps d'invention des Etats-nations en Europe et des réformes des législations sur l'enseignement et l'exercice de la médecine fait figure d'époque relativement favoravle à la circulation des étudiants en médecine et des praticiens. S'intéresser aux mobilités interroge tant l'évolution des savoirs médicaux et les attentes qu'ils véhiculent que le rapport aux institutions nationales de formation. Il implique d'éclairer les choix etudiants et les modalités de diplomation des non-nationaix dans les universités. Ce mouvement interroge aussi les attendus politiques qui encadrent l'exercice médical, la construction des exclusivités nationales et la manières dont les médecins étrangers composent (ou pas) avec ces règlementations, les formes de leur exercice dans leurs pays d'installation. Au delà, le mouvement des médecins s'inscrit dans des dynamiques migratoires, notamment européennes, qui peuvent les mener dans plusieurs métropoles et dans les colonies.

Dance on the volcano: Istanbul (1918-1923) - a capital under occupation
Une capitale sous occupation
Bien oubliée au milieu du chaos de la première guerre mondiale, l’occupation d'Istanbul / Constantinople, la capitale ottomane, est devenue un mythe dans l’imaginaire turc : première (et unique) reconquête de la capitale de l’Empire et du califat par des troupes étrangères, les quatre années de présence anglo-franco-italienne sont vécues comme une libération par les Grecs de la ville et, dans un premier temps, comme une insupportable humiliation pour les Turcs : assez vite, plusieurs groupes se détachent, les nouveaux riches collaborateurs qui profitent de la liberté d’une ville franche, une majorité d’habitants qui s’accommodent de la présence étrangère mais pas des privations qui s’installent et les partisans de la révolte en Anatolie, les Kémalistes. Malgré des conditions difficiles, Istanbul connaît une immense activité journalistique, sociale et culturelle marquée par une liberté que permet cette atmosphère de guerre et de fin du monde.

Beyond the “White Man’s Burden”?
Representations of the “Far East” in the English-Speaking World since World War II
This one-day workshop seeks to examine the shifting image of the “Far East” in the English-speaking world, including - but not limited to - news, film, museums, exhibitions, travel literature and television. In part, it seeks to complement the study of media representations with a tentative assessment of their reception, and by examining the overlapping areas between media representations and historical events. The period since the Second World War has seen profound changes in the “Far East”, notably because of decolonization, the creation of independent nation-states and the increasing power of China, Japan and India. This workshop will examine the persistence (or not) of the “white man’s burden” in a post-imperial age.

The creation, reception and circulation of the figures of otherness in the cinema of fiction
Exoticism in countershot workshop
Cet atelier, regroupant plusieurs approches disciplinaires sur le cinéma, se propose de réfléchir à la notion d’exotisme dans les films de fiction. Il est l’occasion de revenir aux textes conceptualisant cette notion (en peinture et en littérature notamment), et de les confronter à diverses cinématographies européennes ou extra-européennes. L’enjeu est de multiplier les points de vue dans une dynamique de champ-contrechamp. Nous prendrons à bras-le-corps la question de l’exotisme dans le cinéma de fiction pour en faire un objet d’histoire culturelle, en faisant aussi appel à d’autres disciplines (anthropologie, esthétique, histoire des formes). Une analyse des rapports entre exotisme et cinéma peut nourrir les réflexions des sciences humaines et apporter des éléments de compréhension de ce « fait social total » qu’est le cinéma.

What are the normative assumptions and solutions proposed to develop morally right or wrong compromise typologies? Can we develop a universal ethics of compromise or does compromise vary depending on the socio-cultural history of a country? To what extent is culture relevant in shaping types and norms of compromise? The conference aims, firstly, to understand how to distinguish a compromise from a compromise of principles; what constitutes an ethical or fair compromise? Second, it will analyze if practices of compromise vary from one country to another. To do so, different types of compromise will be explored through geopolitical, philosophical, historical approaches, with a particular focus on Japan and Taiwan. This symposium will examine theoretical issues and practices associated with compromise, by adopting a global perspective. It will bring together contributions from European, American and Asian researchers.

The AJEI (Association Youth South Asia Studies) is pleased to open the call for the organization of the 21st edition of the International AJEI Workshop. The Workshop has to be held in South Asia, with a local institution (university or research center) and must be organized by a team of PhD students and/or Post doctoral candidates. A global history of free ports
Capitalism, commerce and geopolotics (1600-1900)
Exactly how free ports arose in early-modern Europe is still subject to debate. Livorno, Genoa and other Italian cities became famous as major examples of a particular way of attracting trade. Between the late eighteenth and the nineteenth century the existence of free ports – as specific fiscal, cultural, political and economic entities with different local functions and characteristics – developed from an Italian and European into a global phenomenon. While a general history of free ports – from their first emergence to the present-day special economic zones – has never been written, this research network aims to pave the way for such an enterprise. The history of free ports research network is organising a number of conferences in the next years, in order to work towards a standard publication and interactive research platform for the history of free ports from the XVIth to the early XXth century.

L’Occident médiéval représente-t-il une exception dans la mise en place d’une société persécutrice, centrée sur l'accusation d'hérésie ? La méthode comparatiste invite à réfléchir au caractère exceptionnel des mécanismes religieux et politiques de la répression de l’hérésie, mais aussi de proposer de nouvelles perspectives – tant sur le plan de la méthode que des orientations générales. Cette table ronde réunira des médiévistes japonais et européens travaillant sur des formes de religiosité ayant été considérées comme déviantes dans leurs contextes respectifs. L'objectif est de poser les bases d’une collaboration entre chercheurs de l’université de Neuchâtel et de l’université de Nagoya, dans le cadre d’un projet déposé au Fonds national suisse de la recherche scientifique (FNS).

Appropriating, exhibiting, and reconstituting objects and human remains from colonial conquests (late 19th century-present day)
Most major ethnographic museums in Europe hold objects that can be traced back to the wars of conquest and “pacification” of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, during what was one of the most violent phases of European colonial expansion. The appropriation of ethnographic artifacts and human remains for the purpose of collection or desecration was a feature of colonial expansion. It has become the focus of a growing field of research. Collecting and accumulating objects took various shapes. Some were looted as war trophies in the violence of combat; others were negotiated in complicated and often uneven hierarchical fashion. This one-day conference will underline the diversity of these processes.

Contemporary Amman and the Right to the City
A city of four million inhabitants today, Amman’s expansion has become disproportionate to its urban history. Amman has experienced an impressive urban growth over the past fifty years, driven by forced migration and market laws. Developing from a small rural settlement at the end of the 19th century, Amman evolved into a regional crossroad at the end of the 20th century, and has become today a symbol for the consolidation of Hashemite rule, and as a result, the site of its contestation. Amman’s exceptional position among other regional capitals and its recent urban history has forced its inhabitants to create narratives concerning the city’s foundation, invent urban traditions, and negotiate ways of socialization.

A new history of prisons and incarceration?
L'histoire des pratiques d'enfermement suscite actuellement un nouvel intérêt au niveau international. Longtemps concentrés, dans le sillage des travaux de Michel Foucault ou de Michelle Perrot, par exemple, à l'époque contemporaine, les travaux dans ce domaine s'interrogent aujourd'hui davantage sur les époques précédentes. Profitant des apports nombreux des historiographies anglaise et nord-américaine, hispanique, italienne ou germanophone, cette nouvelle histoire de l'enfermement s'élargit en outre vers d'autres pratiques qui dépassent la seule prison pénale. Ces premières journées, sous forme d’atelier, seront consacrées à un état de la recherche ; elles entendent constituer un jalon dans la formation projetée d’un réseau international centré sur l’étude des enfermements, plus particulièrement à l’époque moderne.

The Humanitarian - a new research field for history in Europe

Dans le cadre de la venue de Johannes Paulmann, directeur de l’Institut Leibniz d’histoire européenne à Mayence (IEG), comme professeur invité, le laboratoire d'excellence (labex) « Écrire une histoire nouvelle de l’Europe » (EHNE) organise le séminaire Migrations et mobilités en Europe, XIXe-XXe siècles. Ce cycle se termine le mercredi 13 juin par l’atelier L’humanitaire : nouveau champ de recherche pour une histoire nouvelle de l’Europe, qui réunit le LabEx EHNE, l'IEG, le laboratoire TEMOS (université d'Angers) et le Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO/Leiden University). Les participants présenteront des travaux et des programmes de recherche sur la thématique.

Chinese objects and their lives
Over the last twenty years, material culture studies have occupied a growing place in the social sciences. How does this growing interest in objects and material culture reveal itself in Chinese studies? Choosing from different disciplines and different periods, this AFEC workshop aims to examine how to approach objects in the humanities and social sciences—from everyday objects to natural objects, consumer goods, technical or scientific instruments, objects of study or devotion, or ritual objects and works of art. By bringing together specialists from different fields (history, art history, archaeology, technology, anthropology, literature, sociology, etc.), the workshop explores the life, trajectory and the possible metamorphoses of the value, status and function of objects, as well as the relationships these artefacts have with individuals—raising in addition questions of their social uses—by focusing on their religious, symbolic, political, economic, emotional or memorial dimensions.

L’Institut universitaire Varenne (IUV) et l’Association francophone de justice transitionnelle (AFJT) organisent leur cinquième université d’été consacrée à la justice transitionnelle. Elle est destinée – au travers d’un thème – à former et sensibiliser les participants à l’ensemble des mécanismes judiciaires et extra-judiciaires permettant de traiter les violations massives et systématiques des droits de l’homme. Lors de l’édition 2018, l’université d’été aura pour thème « Processus de paix et justice transitionnelle ». Cette dernière sera donc analysée au prisme du contexte de sa mise en œuvre.

En 1868 au Japon, s’ouvre une nouvelle époque, universellement connue sous le nom d’ère Meiji. Ce phénomène entre révolution et restauration, pourrait plus justement apparaître comme une refondation culturelle. Ce terme de « refondation » voudrait évoquer le processus par lequel la culture prémoderne japonaise, que l’époque d’Edo avait portée à un niveau inégalé, est remodelée et réorientée vers des fins désormais reliées à la place nouvelle que le Japon se voit donner dans le monde. En conséquence, le colloque se concentrera sur la réorganisation interne d’un héritage perçu dès lors comme particulier, pour en faire le réceptacle et l’instrument d’une forme renouvelée de la culture asiatique dont le Japon entend se faire le champion.
