O colóquio O Gesto e a Crença, organizado no âmbito das atividades do grupo Sociabilidades e Práticas Religiosas (CITCEM), pretende ser uma plataforma de debate internacional e interdisciplinar para jovens investigadores que desenvolvam o seu trabalho no âmbito dos Estudos de Religião. Com o intuito de difundir novas perspetivas sobre as diversas vivências do religioso, este colóquio encontra-se aberto a contributos das mais diversas áreas das Ciências Sociais e Humanas, de modo a desenvolver campos de análise plurais e comparativos.

Assessing 180 Years of International Expansion
Following a pattern of itinerant preachers, inherited from the Second Great Awakening context from which their religion emerged, and from New Testament proselytes, Mormon missionaries began as early as June 1830 to go on missions. First, they traveled within the United States and Canada; then, looking beyond North America, they began to take their religion across the world starting with a mission to England as early as 1837. While the movement can do nothing about the fact that it originated in the United States, we hope the presentations in the conference will help determine on the one hand whether and to what extent a numerically “decentered” Mormonism also means a de-americanized Mormonism. On the other hand, we expect the communications to help come to an informed opinion on the place of other cultures in the movement, on how expansion contributes to interaction with local, state authorities and the extent of its localization.

The worship of the Virgin Mary - historical research and disclosure
Ces deux journées de séminaire international proposent d'abord d'explorer « temps, expression, diffusion et mutations de la dévotion mariale » de la première modernité aux débuts de l'époque contemporaine à partir de la présentation du Dictionnaire historique de la Vierge Marie dirigé par Fabienne Henryot et Philippe Martin (Perrin, 2017) en réunissant des historiens français et italiens spécialistes d'histoire religieuse, d'histoire du livre, et de l'art dans un débat scientifique ouvert au regard de l'anthropologue et à celui de jeunes chercheurs. La rencontre donne aussi l'occasion d'appréhender matériellement son sujet par des visites de lieux représentatifs de la piété mariale napolitaine, mais aussi de considérer la dimension divulgative de la recherche historique par l'approche cinématographique que le film L'apparition de Xavier Giannoli (France, février 2018) autorise.

Language contact and translation in religious context
Comparative approaches
This conference brings together anthropologists and linguists working on conversion, cultural transmission and translation theory, as well as on various case studies, whose geography comprises Oceania, Amazonia, Yucatan, Sub-Saharan Africa, Middle East, Europe, Alaska and Chukotka (Russia), and whose temporal frame spreads from the Hellenistic era to the Spanish colonization of the Americas and to the present time. The main questions of the conference are the modalities of the ethnolinguistic encounter and translation accompanying religious conversion, whether, and how, the language gets altered as a result of these processes, and what are the broader cognitive and sociocultural consequences that accompany the linguistic transformation.

Islam and cohabitation in Subsaharan Africa
Face à la montée des extrémismes et l’émergence des mouvements religieux exclusivistes en Afrique subsaharienne, d’intéressantes initiatives issues pour l’essentiel de la société civile se font jour et gagnent du terrain en réinventant la fraternité religieuse entre musulmans et chrétiens. Le projet de cette initiative est de dépasser les préjugés pour interroger la nouvelle islamité faite de partage, de reconnaissance, de rencontres et d’ouverture qui structure désormais les relations et participe de la construction du vivre-ensemble en Afrique subsaharienne.

Young researchers study day at the laboratory for studies and research in sociology and ethnology in Montpellier (LERSEM)
Cette journée d’étude a pour but de cerner le thème de l’émotion à travers une approche pluri-disciplinaire comprenant, anthropologie, sociologie et les masters reliés au parcours sciences sanitaires sociales. Sont invités à intervenir des étudiants de masters des différentes disciplines qui présenteront des travaux sur l’émotion. Par ce biais, les étudiants de l’UFR 5 bénéficient d’une première expérience en matière de communication et d’organisation d'événements scientifiques.

Organology - perceptions - multi-functionality
Percussion instruments have a renewal of interest for a few years, after being a long time poor relatives of academic research and very often relegated to the end of the catalogues of musical instruments. However, recent studies show the complexity of uses of these items which, beyond their only sonorous mechanism, are mobilized in a wide range of contexts (ceremonies, theater, funerary field, votive offerings, etc.) for numerous reasons. Special attention will be paid to idiophones, but also to membranophones when data allows it.

Tools and Methods for the History of Churches between East and West (5th-19th century)
This doctoral workshop will make it possible to relate compartmentalized historiographies even though they share a central and strong object, the Church, which is often treated only as a backdrop to history. The participants who will take part in this school will have the opportunity to see combined diverse and complementary approaches: social, normative, liturgical, political, orientalist. The participants will have access to the methods, the problematization and the last achievements of these different interdisciplinary approaches in the long term.

Economic reform and social change in the age of reformation
En critiquant le monopole exercé par Rome dans l'administration des biens du salut ainsi que leur marchandisation, les mouvements réformateurs ébranlent toute l’économie traditionnelle de la foi. Sur le plan théologique, l’économie du salut passe du modèle de l’achat (rachat de la faute) à celui du don gratuit (effacement gracieux de la dette). Sur le plan pécuniaire, la gestion vénale de la fortune terrestre de l’Église est dénoncée. Mais les réformateurs s'emparent aussi d’autres questions, renouvelant les discours sur la dette, le prêt à intérêt, la charité publique, etc. Reste à savoir si la refonte de l’économie de la foi opérée par la Réforme a vraiment donné lieu à l’émergence de nouvelles pratiques, éthiques et conduites économiques.
