16th annual symposium of the International Medieval Society – Paris
For its 16th annual symposium, the International Medieval Society Paris invites scholarly papers on any aspect of time in the Middle Ages. Papers may deal with the experience or exploitation of time, its reckoning or measuring, its inscription, its theorization, or the question of how or why or whether we should demarcate the “Middle Ages.” Papers focusing on historical or cultural material from medieval France or post-Roman Gaul, or on texts written in medieval French or Occitan, are particularly encouraged, but compelling papers on other material will also be considered.

Call for papers - Representation
The Maison Française conference committee invites proposals on the social history of the British, American or French photobook from 1900 to the present. Papers will address: commitment or explicit political engagement; memory, commemoration and the writing of history; materiality (whether real or virtual), and how material form affects circulation, handling, critical responses and the social life of the photobook. We invite contributors to analyse these topics with respect to the growth of the market for the photobook as a commodity and an object of bibliophilic attention. Proposals focusing on contemporary productions are particularly welcome.

"Studies in Book Culture" Review
Book fairs, writers’ festivals, conventions and other literary gatherings are hubs of activity. From the foundation of the Frankfurt Book Fair in 1454, to the post-war growth of the festival format, to the proliferation of digital and live events in the twenty-first century, book fairs and festivals have shaped book cultures and publishing industries. They are sites of global and local commerce, where books, rights and ideas are traded. They are also carnivalesque, located outside the everyday. Fairs and festivals are celebrations of creativity, flashpoints for anxieties, and sites of bad behaviour. Inhibitions are lowered and people wear masks, power is exposed and sometimes mocked, and books come out to play.

The reception of Luther in France and Europe - the origins of the Reform
Il y a 500 ans, à l’automne 1518, un an après la publication de ses 95 thèses, la pensée de Luther pénètre pour la première fois en France, sous la forme d’un recueil de textes récemment publié à Bâle. Les œuvres du Réformateur commencent ainsi par être importées dans le royaume ; elles circulent et y sont lues ; elles seront bientôt réimprimées et traduites, mais aussi contestées,condamnées et parfois détruites. L'ambition de ces journées d'étude est d'explorer les premiers temps de la réception de la Réforme en France, et d'apporter quelques éclairages complémentaires sur la réception du luthéranisme en Europe et dans le monde.

First Saint-Omer international colloquium
The first Saint-Omer international colloquium is co-organized by the Centre de Recherche et d’Études Histoire et Sociétés (EA 4027 CREHS - Université d’Artois), and the Cultural Services of St Omer country’s Urban district (CAPSO). It is part of the pluri-disciplinary research programme The Renaissance in the Northern Provinces, coordinated since 2015 by Pr. Charles Giry-Deloison and Dr. Laurence Baudoux, and is in the continuity of the conferences already held at the University of Artois. The Saint-Omer colloquium aims to address all expressions of the Renaissance in the field of Humanities (philosophy, literature, arts), in the former Southern Netherlands in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It will focus in particular on the exchanges, encounters and bonds between the main actors of this cultural revival.

Los agentes de la censura en la España de los siglos XVI y XVII
Lejos de la visión caricaturesca que se suele tener de la figura del censor, este puede desempeñar un papel político, religioso o cultural muy sutil. Su actividad resulta tanto más compleja cuanto que suele obrar en tiempos turbios, en los que los criterios de censura no solo van cambiando sino que dejan entrever conflictos entre fines políticos, intereses económicos y tutela religiosa. Esta jornada, dedicada al estudio de los diferentes actores que, en la España de la Contrarreforma, se han prestado a operaciones de censura, se interesa tanto por los censores que trabajaban en un contexto oficial e institucional como por los que actuaban de manera extra-oficial y más o menos oficiosa (calificadores del Santo Oficio, órdenes religiosas, autores de aprobaciones, teóricos de la censura, editores, traductores, adaptadores, bibliotecarios y los propios autores y artistas).

This issue aims to enrich knowledge and analyses of the words and discourse of publishers, that is to say, of those individuals who are responsible for the development, production and distribution of books or periodicals. We will adopt here a trans-national and trans-historic perspective (19th to 21st centuries) at the junction of the sociology of publishing, of cultural history and of intellectual history in order to identify points of convergence amongst various case studies. In what ways have publishers revealed themselves through their words and in writing since their debut as social figures in the 19th century through to their contemporary incarnations? How has the place of publishers in literary, intellectual and editorial fields been constructed by discourses that accompany the act of publishing?

The life of medieval prose in the dawn of modernity
Le milieu du XVème siècle se caractérise, notamment, par l’émergence de bouleversements profonds pour la production, la circulation, la transmission, voire la canonisation de la culture écrite occidentale. La diffusion s’accélère, les œuvres partent à la rencontre d’un public plus ample et plus diversifié et de nouveaux acteurs font leur entrée dans les circuits de transmission. Ce changement de rythme et de fonctionnement a principalement été étudié sous l’angle du mode de production, au départ du circuit imprimerie/humanisme et en mettant l’emphase sur ce que la Modernité naissante introduisait de nouveauté en termes d’écart, d’altérité, de rupture, voire de polémique. La perspective sera ici inversée, et c’est davantage l’angle de la continuité qui déterminera la vision. Le Moyen Âge, en effet, poursuit son avancée dans le temps, et le ‘long Moyen Âge’ dont parle Jacques Le Goff peut s’appréhender d’une façon très concrète à partir précisément de la transmission des textes médiévaux en langue française dans l’Occident et dans la Méditerranée.

Heritage libraries in Belgium, 500 years of history
En cette année académique 2017-2018, l’université de Liège et l’université de Gand commémorent chacune le bicentenaire de leur fondation. Ce n’est cependant pas leur seul point commun : ces deux institutions abritent en effet les pôles patrimoniaux les plus significatifs du Nord et du Sud de la Belgique. L’occasion était belle de prendre appui sur ces deux dépôts (universitaires) d’exception pour aller à la rencontre d’autres bibliothèques belges dont les richesses – présentées ici sous des angles inédits – méritaient tout autant un éclairage de premier plan.

Studying book history at the École de l’Institut d’histoire du livre 2018
L'Institut d’histoire du livre (IHL) regroupe plusieurs institutions fortement impliquées dans le domaine du livre et du patrimoine graphique: la Bibliothèque municipale de Lyon (BmL), le musée de l’imprimerie et de la communication graphique, l’École nationale supérieure des sciences de l’information et des bibliothèques (Enssib), l’Ecole normale supérieure de Lyon (ENS de Lyon) et l’École nationale des chartes à Paris (ENC). L'IHL organise chaque année à Lyon une école d'été dont l'objectif est de promouvoir la diffusion des savoirs spécifiques au monde du patrimoine écrit et imprimé. Pour la 15e édition de son École, l’IHL offrira trois cours en parallèle animés par Dominique Varry, Claudio Galleri avec Eléonore Litim et Neil Harris avec Ilaria Pastrolin.

Objects, places and practices
Le présent colloque inaugure une série de rencontres internationales et interdisciplinaires consacrées à la culture enfantine en URSS (1917-1941). Il s’agit d’étudier les objets culturels créés pour et/ou par les enfants et relevant de la culture littéraire, textuelle, musicale, matérielle (comme les jouets), visuelle (illustration, imagerie murale fixe et mobile) et spectaculaire (cinéma, théâtre d’ombres et de marionnettes). Nous situerons ces objets dans leurs conditions de création, diffusion, réception et appropriation, et les comprendrons dans leurs dimensions pratiques et réflexives.

Early Modern Book Project methodological workshop
La présentation générale de la bibliothèque de l’Arsenal et de ses collections sera suivie d’un atelier en deux parties ayant pour but d’exposer en quoi les méthodes de la bibliographie matérielle sont utiles à la recherche en histoire du livre, à partir d’exemples concrets issus du riche fonds ancien de la bibliothèque. L’objectif de l’atelier est aussi d’initier les participants à ces méthodes, à partir d’exercices pratiques fondés sur la manipulation d’imprimés anciens.

A tribute to Joseph Peyré on the 50th anniversary of his death
Journaliste et écrivain originaire des Basses Pyrénées, Joseph Peyré s’est profondément signalé par son regard d’humaniste. Attentif à son proche environnement dont il tire maints principes directeurs, il n’a de cesse d’en conserver jalousement la quintessence lorsqu’il se lance à la découverte du monde qui lui est échu. Un monde notamment ébranlé par de nombreux conflits –nationaux comme internationaux- qui l’amènent tout naturellement à réagir. Un monde dont il ne peut se résoudre à voir disparaître un certain nombre de valeurs pour lesquelles il s’engage corps et âme : la personne humaine dans toute sa complexité ontologique tout autant que le milieu naturel dans l’intégrité de ses écosystèmes.
