  Religion and Politics in Small Nations: Comparative Socio-cultural and Institutional Dimensions

  ISSR's 35th Congress - Thematic session

  Small nations of Central and Eastern Europe have provided fertile ground to study the relationship between religion and politics. Too often, however, research on the region suffers from a problematic Orientalism, depicting nationalism in the East as a dangerous ethnic, religious, and anti-modern force. This bilingual thematic session, organized within the framework of the 2019 Congress of the International Society of Sociology of Religions (ISSR - July 9-12 - Barcelona), seeks to understand the relationship between politics and religion “from within” small nations themselves.

  Law and the sacred

  S’interroger sur le lien entre sacré et droit revient également à prendre en considération la spiritualité, dans son aspect tant confessionnel qu’à travers la pratique religieuse, comme vecteur de normativité en droit français. La séparation des Églises et de l’État en 1905 provoque une redéfinition de ce lien entre sacré et droit. L’État impose un concept de neutralité, il se contraint lui-même à une attitude « passive » vis-à-vis de la pratique religieuse des citoyens. Pourtant, le Sacré et le Droit ont bien une histoire commune dont le poids est encore perceptible. La frontière entre ces deux notions n’est pas aussi nette qu’elle semble l’être au premier abord, et la réflexion autour de leurs relations mérite qu’on s’y attarde.
