  Different Metals, Different Needs?

  Coinage in Western and Mediterranean Europe (5th–8th centuries)

  This Study Day is focused to show the coin repertoire of the Early Middle Ages in several metals and in the different areas of Europe, and trying to establish a nexus between them up to the first decades of the eight century which leads to important changes, that will be notably accentuated with the sudden Umayyad conquest of the Iberian Peninsula and the rise of the Carolingian Empire.

  Coins and currency in the 10th and 11th centuries

  Issuing authorities, political powers, economic influences

  The 10th-11th centuries were crucial for the history of France. The centralized Carolingian state gave way to the regional principalities. Why this happened and how it affected society are core questions for historical research. The study of coins has a huge potential to contribute to this debate. Contrary to written documents, they survive in thousands. Contrary to other archaeological artefacts, coins are struck by official decision, reflecting the “state”. They are more closely datable them most other artefacts. Coins also circulate widely in many spheres of society, reflecting trade and economics.The conference Coins and currency in the 10th and 11th centuries takes advantage of this leap forward to reopen the debate. The aim of the conference is to bring numismatists, archaeologists and historians together in order to confront their ideas for the mutual benefit of historical knowledge.

  Animals and animality in the Roman era

  L’actualité nous amène souvent à regarder les choses à travers le filtre du passé et à revisiter l’histoire, à réinterroger les sources, et à renouveler le regard sur un sujet pas tout à fait nouveau. Il en va ainsi de l’histoire de l’animal. Si donc on doit s’interroger sur la place de l’animal dans la vie quotidienne, la vie profane, comme la vie religieuse, l’analyse nous entraîne beaucoup plus loin dans les arcanes de la pensée, dans l’épaisseur des croyances de l’homme roman. De nombreux axes pourront être envisagés, en accord avec l’importance du sujet et la multitude des approches possibles. Toutes les sources, écrites et visuelles, qui sont multiples et diverses pourront être sollicitées.

  Production and interdisciplinary and cross-border exchange, from Antiquity to the present day

  Ce séminaire, interdisciplinaire et international, a pour ambition de réfléchir sur l’artefact, questionné dans ses multiples facettes. À ce titre, toutes les formes d’artefact feront l’objet d’une analyse croisant différentes approches. Qu’est-ce qu’un artefact pour un historien, un archéologue, un géographe, un sociologue, un économiste ? Comment chacun l’appréhende-t-il dans son domaine de recherche et d’action ? En quoi le questionnement de l’artefact éclaire-t-il des approches qui peuvent finalement se compléter et interagir ? Les exemples qui seront présentés tenteront ainsi d’illustrer ces différents questionnements.

  On 08, 09 and 10 November 2018, the 1st International Congress of Young Researchers in Middle Ages (ICYRMA) will take place at the University of Évora, Portugal. ICYRMA is destinated to students at master, doctoral and postdoctoral level and/or to those who have obtained their academic degrees in the last five years. It aims to be an interdisciplinary space for dissemination, discussion and contact among young researchers who study the Middle Ages from various perspectives: history, archeology, art history, literature, philosophy, philology, anthropology, methodology, among other areas.

  Ce séminaire de recherche a pour vocation de rassembler autour de thèmes fédérateurs historiens, archéologues et historiens de l’art, spécialistes des mondes médiévaux méditerranéens. Interdisciplinaire et comparatiste, il propose une approche de l’économie et des sociétés du monde méditerranéen. Organisé en cycles de deux ans, il est l’occasion de dresser un tableau des dernières recherches autour de thèmes transversaux, communs aux espaces et disciplines concernées par la Méditerranée médiévale.
