Beyond the “White Man’s Burden”?
Representations of the “Far East” in the English-Speaking World since World War II
This one-day workshop seeks to examine the shifting image of the “Far East” in the English-speaking world, including - but not limited to - news, film, museums, exhibitions, travel literature and television. In part, it seeks to complement the study of media representations with a tentative assessment of their reception, and by examining the overlapping areas between media representations and historical events. The period since the Second World War has seen profound changes in the “Far East”, notably because of decolonization, the creation of independent nation-states and the increasing power of China, Japan and India. This workshop will examine the persistence (or not) of the “white man’s burden” in a post-imperial age.

Rethinking the History of the Rust Belt since 1945
This region, stretching from western New York to eastern Iowa, was until the middle of the 20th century the country's manufacturing and industrial heartland. From the Great Migrations that radically transformed its demographics to the weakening of its economic model, as well as the massive struggles waged by local workers and protagonists of the Civil Rights movement, the political and social history of the Rust Bel. By bringing into dialogue the ongoing or recently completed research of doctoral students and junior academics with a view to opening up new perspectives on the history of the Rust Belt, from a range of disciplines (history, sociology, political science, geography), we intend to highlight spaces and actors too often relegated to the margins of this region’s history, despite their having decisively contributed to shaping the contemporary Rust Belt

Planetary ethics and aesthetics, interspecies communities, post-gender and anarchist societies, indigenous knowledge, vegetal sentience... The paths Ursula K. Le Guin has opened for our imagination to travel are numerous, subtle itineraries through which we might find ways to better inhabit the XXIst century. The international bilingual conference "Le Guin's Legacies" will engage with her work from a multiplicity of perspectives, tracing its literary, ecological, philosophical, socio-economical and anthropological ramifications: its potential for re-engineering the world we live in.

Le Rize accueille en résidence deux jeunes chercheur·e·s inscrit·e·s en master 1 ou 2 de sciences humaines et sociales pour un stage indemnisés de quatre à six mois, entre janvier et juillet 2019. Le Rize est un équipement culturel original doté d’un pôle documentaire (il abrite les archives municipales de Villeurbanne et une médiathèque), d’un pôle d’action culturelle et pédagogique et d’un pôle scientifique. Il a pour ambition de stimuler et de favoriser la recherche, mais aussi et surtout de valoriser ses résultats, notamment par une diffusion auprès des publics sous la forme d’expositions, de manifestations et de publications.

The circulation and renewal of knowledge about nature and the environment in France and Germany
Ce colloque propose une réflexion comparée sur la construction et la diffusion des savoirs sur la nature et l’environnement, en France et en Allemagne, afin d’interroger l’émergence et le succès du champ d’études des humanités environnementales. À travers une mise en regard épistémologique et pluridisciplinaire – associant les lettres et les sciences sociales –, il s’agit de se demander pourquoi l’on vient à parler d’humanités environnementales, dans quels contextes, à propos de quels objets et quels modes d’analyse, et ce alors même que l’énoncé n’est pas complètement stabilisé. Questionner la construction de ce champ dans les contextes nationaux français et allemand est riche de sens, d’autant que l’on sait les deux « traditions nationales » des rapports à la nature souvent présentées comme clivées (schématiquement, la filiation des Lumières en France, celle du romantisme en Allemagne), alors que les processus historiques ont été plus complexes.

The Humanitarian - a new research field for history in Europe

Dans le cadre de la venue de Johannes Paulmann, directeur de l’Institut Leibniz d’histoire européenne à Mayence (IEG), comme professeur invité, le laboratoire d'excellence (labex) « Écrire une histoire nouvelle de l’Europe » (EHNE) organise le séminaire Migrations et mobilités en Europe, XIXe-XXe siècles. Ce cycle se termine le mercredi 13 juin par l’atelier L’humanitaire : nouveau champ de recherche pour une histoire nouvelle de l’Europe, qui réunit le LabEx EHNE, l'IEG, le laboratoire TEMOS (université d'Angers) et le Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO/Leiden University). Les participants présenteront des travaux et des programmes de recherche sur la thématique.

En donnant la parole aux historiens, la table ronde vise à faire la lumière sur les différentes formes de solidarité, émergées dans le contexte des mouvements de populations au XXème siècle dans la région de l’Europe centrale et orientale sur le plan communautaire, étatique et international. À partir d’études de cas précis, il s’agira dans le cadre de cette table ronde d’allier analyse historique à l’étude empirique du contemporain. Comment ces expériences, souvent étroitement liées à leurs contextes particuliers et à leurs cadres régionaux, peuvent-elles être observées aujourd’hui et servir de ressources pour l’étude plus générale de la question des migrations ?

Cette journée d'étude aura pour but de s'interroger à l'heure actuelle sur l'existence d'un imaginaire lié au Grand Nord qui prendrait en considération les réalités scientifiques, culturelles, humaines et écologiques de ce territoire. Elle mettra en perspective d'une part les enjeux actuels de cet espace et d'autre part les représentations fantasmées de l'Occident pour ce lieu. Il s'agira aussi de comprendre comment coexistent et interagissent les productions sur le Grand Nord issues de l'extérieur avec celles produites par les autochtones.

The Colbert Fund - teaching through eyes
Photographic projections and teaching methods in the school environment
Cette journée résulte de la découverte en mai 2013 d’un ensemble de près de 2 000 photographies positives sur plaques de verre conservées dans les locaux de l’ancienne École Primaire Supérieure Colbert. Constitué à partir de vues reproduites en série et vendues en grande partie entre les années 1880 et 1910 par les célèbres maisons d’édition Molteni, Radiguet et Massiot et Mazo, ce fonds forme un ensemble de première importance, par la quantité des images éducatives qui le composent comme par les thématiques et sujets représentés. L’étude pièce à pièce de ces photographies et les recherches menées autour de ce fonds révèlent le caractère prototypique de cette méthode d’enseignement, propre à la fin du xixe siècle.

Les doctrines et les pratiques de la restauration des monuments ont toujours été déterminées par l’origine et le caractère des dommages subis... jusqu’à l’irruption des destructions patrimoniales massives de la première guerre mondiale. Ces deux journées patrimoine Actualités sont consacrées aux enjeux et aux moyens contemporains de mise en valeur du patrimoine de la Reconstruction d’Arras et de Reims. Elles examineront aussi les enjeux de reconnaissance, dans une perspective de développement, d’un ensemble urbain de cette période (Cormicy, 51) en présence de ses représentants.

An Environmental History of the Great War
We intend to bring together an international group of 20 to 30 graduate students working on military, cultural, social, and environmental history of the First World War from 2nd to 7th July 2018. Over the course of the week, they will have opportunity to get to know each other, but also a wide range of internationally recognized academic experts. Guided tours on excursions to French and Belgian sites are an integral part of the program and will enrich the participants' experience.

Attentif à son proche environnement dont il tire maints principes directeurs, il n’a de cesse d’en conserver jalousement la quintessence lorsqu’il se lance à la découverte du monde qui lui est échu. Un monde notamment ébranlé par de nombreux conflits –nationaux comme internationaux- qui l’amènent tout naturellement à réagir. Un monde dont il ne peut se résoudre à voir disparaître un certain nombre de valeurs pour lesquelles il s’engage corps et âme : la personne humaine dans toute sa complexité ontologique tout autant que le milieu naturel dans l’intégrité de ses écosystèmes.

Decolonization and postcolonial issues of childhood and youth (1945-1980)
While young people played a large role in building colonial empires, they were also an essential concern in decolonization. Indeed, the emancipation process of colonized peoples in the second half of the twentieth century raised with great force the social and political issue of children and young people in the colonial and post-colonial context, both in newly-independent and ex-colonizing countries. In a complex set of political and diplomatic, economic and social, demographic and populationist, philosophical and religious questions, colonial and post-colonial issues surrounding children and young people gave rise to specific biopolitics. Children and young people were subjects of policies desired or supported by biopowers and implemented by varied protagonists such as armies, organizations, humanitarians, colonialists, activists, or regular citizens.
