Criticisms of democracy, authoritarianism and populism in Europe

Continuities and disruptions from the inter-war period until today

Facing the feeling of »crisis« of democracy arising in recent years and symbolized by the rise of populist movements, there is a recurrent comparison with the inter-war situation in today’s political debate in many European countries. Is this comparison relevant to understand the specific democratic practices during both periods? Building on this question, the workshop serves as kick-off for the research program Which democracy/democracies? Reflections on the crisis, modernization and limits of democracy in Germany, France, England and Central Europe between 1919 and 1939 supported by the Centre interdisciplinaire d’études et de recherches sur l’Allemagne (CIERA).

The sources of international relations between the political centres of Europe and the Mediterranean (800–1600)

The 15^th International Congress of Diplomatics organized by the Commission internationale de diplomatique, which is being held between the 4th and 6th of October at Leipzig, studies the diplomatic characteristics of medieval and early modern charters and the related documentation being used in “international” and interreligious diplomacy. The main objective of the conference is to analyse the "international" and interreligious repertoire of types and forms of the documents as well as their regional specific characteristics. Special attention will be dedicated to the different stages of tradition and the consequences for historical interpretation focussing on the internal and external characteristics of the diplomatic documentation.

Voltaire from the Rhine to the Danube (18th-19th centuries)

S’il est un écrivain et philosophe français des Lumières qui a entretenu d’intenses relations avec le monde germanique, c’est bien Voltaire. Outre ses nombreux séjours en Allemagne, son œuvre s'y attarde tout particulièrement, non seulement Candide (1759), mais L’Essai sur les Mœurs (1756) et plus spécifiquement Les Annales de l’Empire (1753) ou L’Histoire de la guerre de 1741. Des questions aussi essentielles que la lutte des pouvoirs temporel et spirituel, notamment entre la papauté et le Saint-Empire, la problématique de la Réforme et plus généralement de l’identité religieuse et politique de l’Europe sont placées au cœur de ses réflexions et de son travail d’historien.

The European actors of the "People's spring" 1848

170th anniversary international conference

Après le colloque du cent cinquantième anniversaire de 1848 organisé par la Société de 1848 et des révolutions du XIX^e siècle qui a marqué un important jalon historiographique, il a paru important, exactement vingt ans plus tard, de porter un nouveau regard sur cet événement majeur du XIX^e siècle, et cela en répondant d’abord au souhait maintes fois formulé par Maurice Agulhon d’en mieux connaître les acteurs, au moment précis où le Dictionnaire des dirigeants français de 1848 du Centre d’histoire du XIX^e siècle de Sorbonne Université et de Panthéon-Sorbonne, publié sous son patronage, constitue une nouvelle étape qui permet d’aller plus loin ; mais il s’agit aussi d’élargir la focale pour s’intéresser cette fois à l’ensemble du printemps des peuples. La question centrale de ces journées est ainsi : Qu’est-ce qu’être un acteur du printemps des peuples 1848 ?
