  Regulating bioeconomy

  (Re)Making and regulating life and livelihoods across borders: transnational bioeconomy, law, and governance

  Biotechnological industry, researchers, and governments have entered a new constellation, regime, and accelerated phase, called the Bioeconomy. This agenda - which exists in the form of policy, funding programs, white papers, etc. - reimagines how we live, how we live together with other kinds of life, and, directly, these other kinds of life at the molar and molecular level. In other words: All kinds of livelihoods in their social, economic, and ethical relations are put in motion. This agenda is, geopolitically, not restricted to Global North nor contained by any national or international jurisdiction and governance.

  When things break down

  Tandis que les Science and Technology Studies et les travaux en sociologie des organisations se sont emparés de la thématique de la panne, cet appel à contributions a pour objectif de décloisonner le champ en interrogeant la place de la panne tant dans les sociétés contemporaines que dans celles du passé. Malgré la célèbre mise en garde de Claude Lévi-Strauss qui soulignait que « dire qu’une société fonctionne est un truisme, mais dire que tout, dans une société, fonctionne est une absurdité » (1958 : 17), historiens et anthropologues ont en effet longtemps eu tendance à décrire les sociétés du passé ou éloignées comme des mondes techniques parfaits, sans pannes et sans déchets. Une telle posture n’est plus tenable aujourd’hui. Dans ce numéro, nous nous demanderons quels regards neufs et rafraîchissants porter sur la panne qu’elle soit intentionnelle ou non, artefactuelle et/ou corporelle.
