  2nd annual conference of the anthropology department at the University of Montreal (CADA)

  Thème central en anthropologie, la transmission offre un terrain de réflexion classique qui garde toute sa pertinence contemporaine. Que la transmission implique sans cesse de nouvelles ressources matérielles ou immatérielles (patrimoine génétique, culturel, linguistique, etc.), ou que la transmission serve de modèle d'interprétation pour comprendre plus largement la façon dont l'être humain s’inscrit dans le temps et l’espace, nous proposons ici d’explorer ce thème sous le prisme des quatre sous-disciplines de l’anthropologie.

  Racialization and othering in the context of mobilities: a focus on the Globalized South

  Special Issue of the "Civilisations" Journal, vol. 68 (2019)

  This special issue proposes to understand the multiple transnational circulations of the processes of othering and racialization in postcolonial contexts by shifting the gaze through the category “Globalized South”. By “Globalized South”, we refer to a set of geopolitical areas - interconnected through colonial histories and/or economic and social structural transformations. We prefer this category over others (like “Developing countries” or “Southern countries”) because it points out the dynamics and reconfigurations structuring the relations of domination at the global scale. By adopting this category, we accentuate the social processes that (re)produce the power relations in contemporary societies. In general, this special issue intends to gather papers that focus on the making of racialized identity and otherness in the context of mobilities in the globalized South.

  Fields of vision: Thinking field photography and digital imaging across disciplines

  Digital technologies have profoundly altered how field images are made, how they circulate, and how they generate meaning. Meanwhile, advances in imaging present new possibilities for the production of visual knowledge of the material world. These changes have had profound effects upon the study of visual and material culture. This colloquium aims to train the spotlight on the rapidly shifting terrain of field photography, exploring its significance for the establishment, definition, and development of such interrelated disciplines as archaeology, anthropology, art history, heritage and museum studies.

  The Imprints of 1968's Student Movements in the World

  La contestation politique, sociale et culturelle dont les semaines agitées de mai-juin 1968 furent le paroxysme dans plusieurs pays, se confirme désormais comme objet d’histoire, qui mobilise les chercheurs en sciences sociales aussi bien en France que dans le monde. L’ombre portée de 68 a souvent été interrogée. D’aucun·e·s ont pu y voir un nouvel empire, tout au moins une emprise… Plus concrètement, nous tenterons de scruter les empreintes étudiantes de ces années. Il importe de poursuivre les travaux universitaires qui, depuis une trentaine d’années, se sont efforcés de sortir de l’impressionnisme journalistique, pour analyser l’événement, le mouvement, contribuer à établir sa chronologie, sa diffusion sociale et géographique, tant nationale, internationale que transnationale.

  The creation of the political subject. Reflexivity, subjectivities and power

  IRIS-EHESS seminar 2017-2018

  Au cours des séances de ce séminaire, nous abordons les potentialités heuristiques d’une approche réflexive et attentive aux subjectivités pour l’étude du phénomène politique. Notre approche consiste à éclairer au plus près les actions et les positionnements tant stratégiques qu’affectifs des personnes qui participent à l’enquête, ainsi que la dimension interlocutoire des situations ethnographiées, leur temporalité et leur inscription dans des contextes marqués par des rapports de force eux-mêmes politiquement et historiquement construits.
