  La gran esperanza traída por la revolución rusa de 1917 y la idea de comunismo marcó, como utopía y como práxis política, el pensamiento social contemporáneo y el movimiento obrero internacional, entre interminables y encendidas polémicas, sembrando disensiones, guerras verbales, sectarismos profundos e irreconciliables diferenciaciones. Se desarrollaron diferentes modelos sociales, concepciones organizativas, culturas políticas, que se autonomizaron y cristalizaron como ramas de un árbol de un tronco común.
