Shame is a fundamental social emotion in Mediterranean cultures, which (still nowadays) place a strong and structuring value on honour, and ancient literature bears its mark. From the outset, it is also an ambivalent emotion, with contrasting faces, as evidenced by the semantic differences and overlaps of the doublet αἰσχύνη/αἰδώς. The historical field targeted by the scientific committee of the colloquium is broad, where existing studies preferentially focus on archaic poetic texts (Homer, tragic poets) and on classical authors, Plato and especially Aristotle. The conference Shame and Virtue proposes, from and beyond this period, to extend the investigation to Hellenistic schools, the Roman world and ancient Christianity. In this field, which articulates various types of pluralism (historical, political, linguistic, religious), the papers presented will help to explore the ambivalent relationship between shame and virtue in antiquity.ng

L’initiative est née de la collaboration entre Fabio D’Angelo (directeur de la revue Viaggiatori Journal) et Silvana di Paolo (CNR) et voudrait aborder le thème du voyage – compris comme expérience physique, esthétique, imaginaire, symbolique ou métaphorique – dans les régions du bassin méditerranéen, riche de témoignages archéologiques nombreux qui montrent la continuité des installations humaines de la Préhistoire à nos jours.

Archaeological transitions: the intervals of archaeology, intervals within archaeology
Le colloque clôture le projet Alcotra TRA[ce]S (Transmettre la recherche archéologique dans les Alpes du Sud). Il vise à mettre en commun des recherches et des problématiques de part et d'autre de la frontière franco-italienne. Le premier thème est celui des transitions chronologiques et spatiales en archéologie, dans la zone alpine et ses marges. L’un des enjeux du colloque sera donc de proposer une réflexion sur ces intervalles et de s’interroger sur leur sens, entre données objectives et constructions épistémologiques. La question de la méthodologie d'étude de ces transitions est également au cœur du colloque. Une session pourra être consacrée à la question de la conservation et à la présentation des sites archéologiques, spécifiquement dans la zone alpine franco-italienne.

Occupying Space during Bronze and Iron Ages: From site to landscape
6th Doctoral Meetings of the European School of Protohistory of Bibracte
Archaeology and Space have always been intrinsically connected. On one hand, different attributes of the environment affected human beings forcing them to adapt their behaviour in order to succeed, while on the other, in doing so, communities have influenced their surrounding spaces by transforming them, in some cases irreversibly. As all human actions are by definition immersed in space, for this year’s meeting we have decided to approach the questions of understanding and interpreting these complex processes looking through the prism of scale on which they happen. The extent of these ranges from the processes that occur on the small levels in the spaces of archaeological sites extending to the larger levels when dealing with the narrative of cultural landscapes. Sessions will provide reflection on the social and spatial aspects of archaeological sites and landscapes and will incorporate themes related to subsistence, economy, social behaviour and ideology within the timespan of the European Bronze and Iron Ages.

The Roman soldier from Mark Anthony to Nero
Neronia XI international conference, calls for papers
Porté au pouvoir grâce au soutien des prétoriens en 54, Néron est poussé au suicide quatorze ans plus tard, cette fois à la suite de l’abandon des prétoriens, alors que les légions de Germanie supérieure et d’Espagne citérieure avaient déjà proclamé empereur le gouverneur de la province où elles se trouvaient stationnées. Cette disparition plongea de nouveau dans la guerre civile un monde romain qui n’en avait pas connue depuis une centaine d’années. Entre ces deux dates, le dernier Julio-Claudien passe pour avoir été particulièrement peu intéressé par la chose militaire, autant de raisons pour revenir plus précisément sur les relations entre Néron et le soldat, en tirant parti des nouvelles approches qui ont marqué ces dernières années l’étude de l’armée et de la guerre romaines.

This conference aims to deconstruct the ideas of rural religion as mechanically reproducing urban rituals and religious hierarchies and of the rural world as a space of cultural and religious resilience against urbanity. Rural areas represented an arena for very situational processes of negotiation between, on the one hand, administrative patterns and related social configurations, and, on the other hand, processes of social conformance to the very characteristics of a local specific rural environment, of adaptation to its peculiar habitus and religious customs, possibly involving gods whose competences directly mirrored a geophysical environment made of mountains, rivers, woods, etc.

The Department of Historical Science at the University of Málaga and the Institute of Historiography “Julio Caro Baroja” at the University of Carlos III of Madrid are organizing an international conference titled “Calling upon gods, offering bodies. Strategies of human-divine communication in the Roman Empire from individual experience to social reproduction”. Researchers of Ancient History, History of Religion, Archaeology, Anthropology, Classics, and other related fields are invited to present their research on this topic. The conference aims at analysing how self-experience of religious communication becomes a reflexive phenomenon reproduced in time and space to constitute a collectively shared narrative.

European cultural heritages - Europe and its conflictual, intellectual and symbolic heritage
L’Europe comme héritage conflictuel, intellectuel et symbolique
Les contextes récents des élections européennes et de la montée des nationalismes nous rappellent que la définition culturelle de l'Europe continue de se poser avec acuité, interrogeant les limites des héritages partagés. L'idée d'Europe ne va pas de soi, elle se construit sur des héritages fragiles, fantasmés ou encore remodelés. Cette construction de l’Europe est un phénomène qui varie selon les acteurs, les espaces et le temps. Cette journée d'études cherche à se concentrer sur trois aspects fondamentaux d'une idée de l'Europe qui se charge de symbolique au cours de son histoire : sur l'héritage intellectuel des philosophes, penseurs essentiels dans la définition de l'héritage européen, sur l'héritage symbolique d'une Europe incarnée par des représentations mythologiques, linguistiques ou encore iconographiques. Enfin, sera abordée la question de l'héritage conflictuel d'une Europe construite par ses résistances internes et ses frontières, que celles-ci soient physiques, sociales ou culturelles.

The Western Mediterranean in the 5th century. The great upheaval?
The 5th century is unequivocally identified as a key moment in the history of the Western Mediterranean, marked in particular by the establishment of the Barbarian kingdoms, the end of the Roman Empire in the West and a new phase of Christianity's expansion. These are all major, if not fundamental, upheavals that have profoundly and lastingly influenced the evolution of this geographical area. Currently data available make it very difficult to form a satisfactory global vision of this century because they are so heterogeneous, dispersed and often diluted in diachronic approaches. From this observation emerges the need to gather, cross-reference and compare the extremely abundant information in order to measure the transformations and the space they affect during the 5th century. An international symposium is undoubtedly the most appropriate tool to approach this issue, given the multiplicity of research teams working in this field and the scope of the geographical framework concerned.

Ce colloque régional entend faire le point sur les nombreuses connaissances accumulées depuis des décennies sur les chemins et mobilités en Bretagne depuis l'âge du Bronze. Les découvertes archéologiques se sont en particulier multipliées et proposent un renouveau de l'histoire du réseau routier breton. Elles seront confrontées aux découvertes et connaissances s'agissant des périodes moderne et contemporaine, afin de proposer une véritable lecture diachronique de l'histoire du réseau routier breton. Pour cette raison, les regards disciplinaires seront croisés, entre archéologie, archéogéographie, histoire et géographie.

Living with seismic phenomena in the ancient Mediterranean - myths, history and archaeology
Mythe, histoire et archéologie
L’espace méditerranéen est caractérisé par une forte activité sismique. Sans avoir les connaissances scientifiques dont nous disposons aujourd’hui, les auteurs anciens nous renseignent sur les catastrophes naturelles en fournissant des tentatives d’explication diverses selon les époques et les régions : pour certains les responsables sont les dieux (comme le Poseidon Ennosigaios et Ennosichthon grec ou le Neptune latin) et les tremblements de terre sont des prodiges à interpréter pour changer l’avenir ; mais d’autres auteurs tels Aristote ou Sénèque fournissent d’autres explications, conformément aux théories de la philosophie naturelle. Afin d’analyser les relations entre sociétés humaines, territoires et perceptions des risques de l’antiquité au Moyen Âge, deux colloques sont organisés autour de la problématique générale des caractéristiques récurrentes de la résilience aux catastrophes.

Cult Epithets as an Interface between Religious Systems and Human Agency” (MAP - 741182), the conference Naming and Mapping the gods in the Ancient Mediterranean. Spaces, Mobilities, Imaginaries hopes to bring together the competences and specialties of multiple disciplines – archaeology, history, geography, anthropology, history of religions, philology, reception, social network analysis – in order to consider new documentation corpora concerning the intersection between the divine and space. Among other things, the conference aims to propose an innovative angle of approach: the intersection between the spaces and designations of the gods.

Association française d'histoire économique congress
L'Association française d'histoire économique tient son congrès bisannuel les 6 et 7 décembre 2019 à Paris. Elle a choisi comme thème d'étude « Les conséquences économiques de la paix ». La référence au livre de Keynes est évidente. Elle est ausi une invitation à réfléchir à ce qui se passe après la fin des hostilités dans d'autres contextes historiques que la fin de la première guerre mondiale. La question peut en effet être transposée sur les trois autres périodes de l'histoire. Le sujet est à appréhender sur la très longue durée comme une question rémanente mais qu'il faut à l'évidence contextualiser.
