New technology-based metamorphosis in Japan
In Japan, the kyara-ka phenomenon, ‘transforming into a character’ (Aihara Hiroyuki, 2007) is now giving birth to what Nozawa Shunsuke (2013) calls ‘an emerging art of self–fashioning.’ Based on elaborate disguise techniques, the kyara-ka phenomenon covers a variety of communication strategies and practices: cosplay, kigurumi, Vtubing, utaloid voice banks, use of voice-image filters to upload videos where humans look like characters… Exploring all the aspects of this ‘thingification of humans’, the conference will reflect on how and why a growing number of people market themselves as characters. The conference goal is to address the complexity of issues raised by these voluntary and, perhaps, ironical acts of obliteration. What is the profile of men and women who transform themselves into computer-graphic creatures? How do they deal with being loved only through their digital alter-ego? What little or grand narratives are being produced alongside? Can we still deal with the phenomenon in terms of authenticity (original) versus artificiality (copy)? What negotiations or refusals underly the use of characters as social masks?

Lethal attraction?
With a focus on the loving attachments to objects perceived as emotionally dangerous, this special issue of anthropology journal Terrain seeks to shed light on current controversies and public debates surrounding electronic emotions by comparing them to similar processes involved in other kinds of illegitimate “partnerships”. We propose to examine the conceptions that underpin the production of partners and to analyse the kinds of entity that are supposed to draw humans into emotional entanglements or sexual confusion: robots, electronic gadgets, dolls, fictional characters, sculptures, statues, shadows, human remains, plants, animals, etc.

Conference, symposium - Language
Subjects and subjectivity through language and educative practices

Towards Operative Ontologies
IKKM Biennial Conference 2019
The conference will conclude the IKKM six-year research program on ‘Operative Ontologies’. A term seeming contradictory at first, it assumes that everything that exists is not simply present or given but has been called into being through media and their operations in the most general sense: The ruling (das Walten) of nature as well as the ruling of the social reside under the command of technology, which as increasingly digitized technology is based on switching operations (das Schalten) — e.g. the achievements of bioengineering or the computational models of planet Earth. When embodied operations establish ontological orders and the difference between the ontic and the ontological thus re-enters the ontic, this demands a radical remodeling of ontology. The IKKM Biennial Conference 2019 therefore investigates the given with regard to the procedures through which it has been made possible, produced, set up, brought into the world and called into being — “switched on” — in the first place.

Revue Communications journal no. 106 (2020)

Comparative sensorial discourses - cocoa, coffee, tea, wine, beer and alcohol
Referentials, experiences and the imagination
