Euclid on the Road: Cross Cultural Transmission Translation and Transformation of the Elements
On Clavius’Edition of Euclid
The study day is co-organized by SPHère (UMR 7219) and the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (Berlin). We will discuss the impact and diffusion in Europe and China of the important edition of the Elements of Euclid published by the Jesuit Christoph Clavius in 1574.

Le vendredi 13 décembre 2019 à AgroParisTech se déroulera une journée d'études de l'association Natures Sciences Sociétés Dialogues ayant pour thème l’interdisciplinarité à l’épreuve des sciences transformatives. Cette journée d’étude vise à questionner les incidences du recours à des pratiques de recherche-action s’inscrivant dans cette perspective, dans la mesure où elles réaffirment l’importance du lien entre sciences et sociétés, qui constitue un des thèmes structurants de l’association Natures Sciences Sociétés Dialogues, depuis sa création au début des années 1990.

Ethnology, prehistory and politics from the late 19th century to the interwar period
Ce projet de colloque s’inscrit dans le cadre du programme ANR/DFG ANTHROPOS 2 (2018-2020), Une histoire croisée de l’ethnologie et de la préhistoire en Allemagne et en France jusqu’aux années 1960 porté par l’Institut Frobenius et Paris 3 Sorbonne Nouvelle. Il a pour objectif d’étudier les outils conceptuels forgés par la préhistoire et l’ethnologie, en particulier dans le cadre du tournant organiciste depuis le début du XIXe siècle et de l’émergence de la déclinaison de l’idée d’aires culturelles, de montrer les transferts théoriques s’opérant entre ces deux disciplines, tout en analysant leurs origines et implications politiques dans leurs contextes nationaux.

Reading group of cuneiform mathematical texts
Our working group meets once a month at Paris 7 University to read and discuss, from photographs and / or copies and / or transliterations, selected cuneiform mathematical texts by the participants. Unless otherwise indicated, sessions are held on the Thursdays indicated from 13h to 16h in room 324 of the building Olympe de Gouges. Anyone interested is welcome, whether on a regular basis or more punctual.

The seminar is the meeting point between different SPHERE teams (Sciences, Philosophie, Histoire – UMR 7219, laboratoire SPHERE) that are interested in mathematics. It fosters dialogue between philosophers and historians of mathematics while focusing on textual sources. Speakers are encouraged to make their sources available to the participants.

Nous voulons montrer comment le travail scientifique de ce plus grand encyclopédiste de la première moitié de l'Europe du XIXe siècle est plus que jamais au cœur des questions liées à notre planète d'origine, la Terre, et aux questions posées par notre entrée dans l’Anthropocène.

The purpose of this seminar is to position itself at the center of the scientific, epistemological, technological and societal transformations that the developments of artificial intelligence engage. The seminar we propose therefore aims to study AI in its technological / scientific duality, through its historical, philosophical, epistemological, ethical and sociological aspects. In order to understand the modern stakes of this discipline, we will consider it here as defined in its historicity, but also as a scientific tool, tool of knowledge and transformation of knowledge, of understanding, finally as a socio-cultural entity in interaction with its environment, whether it is human or non-human.

The epistemology of error in the modern age
7th seminar of modern philosophy in Brussels
On se propose d’enquêter sur le rôle qu’à l’époque moderne, la réflexion sur l’erreur a joué dans la formulation des théories philosophiques, d’une part, et dans la mise en rapport de celle-ci avec la théorisation scientifique et la pratique expérimentale, d’autre part. En creusant dans les textes du XVIIe et du XVIIIe siècles, il s’agira de mettre à l’épreuve l’hypothèse selon laquelle l’étude de l’erreur n’est pas le revers pur et simple de la recherche de la vérité. Il sera également question de réduire l’écart qui persiste, sur le plan de l’approche de l’erreur, entre la perspective des historiens de la philosophie et le point de vue propre aux historiens des sciences. Cet appel à communications est destiné à compléter le programme de la journée. Toute contribution consacrée à l’erreur dans la pensée moderne est la bienvenue.

À l’heure où se multiplient encyclopédies en ligne et réflexions sur la propriété intellectuelle, le statut de l’auteur ou encore le plagiat, la réflexion sur les procédés de composition des ancêtres les plus lointains de Wikipédia permettra de s’interroger sur l’élaboration du savoir médical et les différents canaux de sa transmission.

Quantum Social Theory: The Future of Sociology?
In sociology, without explicit basis on quantum theory, numerous streams established strong similarities with it, setting at the forefront of their paradigm: the subjectivity of the observer, the continuous adjustment between the object and the observer, the impossibility to be fully deterministic or discussions about an objective reality. In this session, we invite panellists to discuss the links that can be drawn between quantum theory and sociology. We welcome both empirical (qualitative or quantitative) as well as theoretical papers. Depending on the variety and the quality of the papers, a publication will be considered to set the basis of this emerging theoretical stream.

L’étude des rêves comme phénomènes sociaux circulant dans des groupes suscite actuellement un regain d’intérêt dans le domaine des sciences humaines et sociales. Car, si les rêves sont des phénomènes individuels, dès lors qu’on en témoigne et que, seuls ou presque, un rêveur ou une rêveuse peuvent en témoigner, d’une façon ou d’une autre, les visions et les voix nocturnes deviennent des communications au sens large. C’est à l’exploration de cette part collective, sociale et expressive des rêves que sera consacrée une prochaine livraison de Communications. Comment les rêves s’échangent-ils et se partagent-ils ? Lié à cet argument général, cet appel à contribution porte spécifiquement sur la manière dont on fait circuler actuellement les rêves (ou certains rêves) en les traitant comme des données potentiellement objectivables dans des laboratoires du sommeil ou des banques de rêves.

Studying medieval buildings (1850-1950)
Actors, stakes and methods
The history of medieval architecture was written, from the mid-19th century, by men whose training, career and objectives were variable. In fact, they each developed their methods of analysis and their reading grids of medieval buildings, which are at the origin of our practices in art history and archeology. To be interested in these men and their works: this is the purpose of this study day that will allow to implement, at the scale of Western Europe, this epistemological approach of the medieval sciences dedicated to the castral, civil or religious building. Beyond the monuments themselves, which take the place of a major source, correspondences of scientists, archives of learned societies, photographs, old drawings, or the funds of historical monuments, for example, may be used to deal with one or more of the topics presented below.

Life and Mind. Aristotelian themes in contemporary philosophy
Despite the interest in exploring Aristotelian themes in contemporary philosophy, there has been no coordinated attempt to survey or integrate the ways in which Aristotle’s approach to understanding life, mind, and the relation between them might inform and enrich our own. The objective of this workshop is to explore the way in which Aristotelian thought can brought to bear on contemporary research on the much-debated issue of the so-called mind-body problem and on its implications for the conceptualization of notions such as that of organism, animal and human perception and action, human moral agency, and the relation between mind and life.

The crossed worlds of colour in the 18th century
Au XVIIIe siècle, avant la production et la commercialisation de masse des matériaux d’artistes, la couleur est devenue un espace dynamique pour l’invention scientifique, l’expérimentation artistique, et le succès commercial. En prenant le bleu comme point de mire, cette journée d’études explorera les histoires artistiques, scientifiques et sociales de la couleur en réunissant historiens de l’art, historiens, conservateurs et scientifiques, afin de susciter de nouvelles conversations sur l’histoire des matériaux artistiques et leurs terrains méthodologiques.
