New technology-based metamorphosis in Japan

In Japan, the kyara-ka phenomenon, ‘transforming into a character’ (Aihara Hiroyuki, 2007) is now giving birth to what Nozawa Shunsuke (2013) calls ‘an emerging art of self–fashioning.’ Based on elaborate disguise techniques, the kyara-ka phenomenon covers a variety of communication strategies and practices: cosplay, kigurumi, Vtubing, utaloid voice banks, use of voice-image filters to upload videos where humans look like characters… Exploring all the aspects of this ‘thingification of humans’, the conference will reflect on how and why a growing number of people market themselves as characters. The conference goal is to address the complexity of issues raised by these voluntary and, perhaps, ironical acts of obliteration. What is the profile of men and women who transform themselves into computer-graphic creatures? How do they deal with being loved only through their digital alter-ego? What little or grand narratives are being produced alongside? Can we still deal with the phenomenon in terms of authenticity (original) versus artificiality (copy)? What negotiations or refusals underly the use of characters as social masks?

Ce numéro de la revue Projets de paysage a pour double objectif de faciliter l’accès à la pensée contemporaine des chercheurs japonais à la fois sur la notion de paysage et sur l’action en ce domaine, et de présenter des textes récents de chercheurs français sur le paysage ayant pour terrain le Japon. La question de l’autonomie habitante est ici considérée comme un angle d’attaque pertinent pour répondre à ce double objectif. À quel point la pensée du paysage au Japon est-elle aujourd’hui impliquée dans les évolutions socio-environnementales du pays ? Comment participe-t-elle à la mise en place d’actions adaptées à l’échelle de la vie quotidienne des habitants ? De quelles façons l’idée de paysage est-elle mise au service des citoyens et/ou des collectivités locales ? À quelles conditions permet-elle de mettre en place des pratiques innovantes pour les habitants en matière de gestion des espaces et d’aménagement des territoires ?

The 2020 edition of the Association for the anthropology of social change and development (APAD) conference will focus on the multiple forms of large-scale circulation of goods, ideas, techniques, information and models that increasingly cross the global South and link it to the rest of the world. Panels or papers focusing on smaller-scale, regional or neighbouring countries’ circulations, or showing the consequences of scale change in circulations, are also welcome. We also invite visual anthropologists and filmmakers to propose panels or submit films for public screenings.

Surprising Trajectories in Islam, Gender & Politics in Southeast Asia

Islam in Southeast Asia has enjoyed a thriving trajectory in recent years. This is in large part attributable to various state-led Islamization movements that have succeeded in weaving the values and tenets of Islam into the very fabric of Muslims’ everyday life, thereby fortifying the power of the state that claims to embody the divine authority and immutability of Islam. But while the state imagines itself to be the legitimate (and only) “guardian” of Islam, its attempts to monopolize Islamic interpretations and institutions also – perhaps unintentionally – open up a more complex, discursive space that allows non-state actors to submit to, challenge, or appropriate and refashion various forms of symbolic state power, often in unpredictable ways.

Locating negative affects in post-reform China

This panel takes the prevalence of positivity in post-reform China as an invitation to investigate its opposites: the variety of negative ordinary affects that can be viewed as ensuing from state-induced “situations of restricted agency”. What can we learn from the various forms of negativity that morph out of the socio-political circumstances of post-reform China, and how to tread a fine line between the risk of romanticization and analytical dismissal? Under what conditions do the expression and performance of negative affects constitute “a manifestation of autonomy from state directives” in the context of pervasive “happiness” campaigns? Or is their work ambivalent, if not problematic, especially when they come to be associated with specific marginalized groups?

Spatiality in Japan

Japarchi research network seminars, 2019-2020

Le séminaire annuel « Spatialité au Japon » du réseau scientifique thématique Japarchi se poursuit en 2019. En s’intéressant à un ensemble de notions et de dispositifs fondamentaux de la culture spatiale du Japon, il s’inscrit dans la continuité de l’« encyclopédie ouverte » publiée en 2014 Vocabulaire de la spatialité japonaise. Les interventions prennent appui et se concentrent sur un terme ou une expression. Cette année les entrées thématiques proposées portaient sur : 1) la notion de paysage au Japon, 2) des termes désignant des lieux, moments, rituels associés à l’hospitalité et à sa spatialisation (architecture, ville, milieu rural, paysage, jardin), dans l’histoire et aujourd’hui, 3) la notion d’espaces publics au Japon et de l’ensemble des termes et expressions usuels propres à qualifier ces espaces et définir leurs usages, 4) la ville et l’architecture soutenables, 5) les mobilités urbaines 6) la rétraction urbaine 7) les effets du tourisme dans les espaces.

Archaeology and the history taste in Phoenician and Punic societies

Cette école thématique s’inscrit dans le programme de recherche et formation « Archéologie du goût en Méditerranée occidentale dans les sociétés phénicienne et punique ». Elle constitue la première action du programme et fixera les termes, les contours et les enjeux du débat. Pour cela, nous nous interrogerons sur la question du goût dans les sociétés phénicienne et punique, en nous limitant à deux aspects majeurs que sont : le goût comme construction culturelle ; les goûts et les habitudes alimentaires. Ces thèmes seront analysés à travers une approche pluridisciplinaire et comparatiste qui dépasse les frontières entre chronologie, disciplines et cultures différentes. L’objectif de l’École thématique est de croiser les approches disciplinaires, les terrains de recherches, les périodes et les corpus de sources afin de proposer aux jeunes participants une ouverture méthodologique et scientifique autour d’une thématique commune d’étude, et d’en explorer toute la richesse.

Des post colonial studies à l'histoire de la pensée raciale, nombreuses sont les études qui ont exploré la manière dont s'est construit l'Autre corporel de l'Europe. Elles ont souligné la façon dont la forme du crâne ou des yeux, la couleur de la peau et la présence de marques ou de tatouages, mais aussi la tenue vestimentaire, l'hexis ou l'appétit sexuel présumé des populations extra-européennes ont pu tenir lieu de principe de classification et de construction de l'altérité.
