Imperial Mysticisms: Piety and Power in Early Modern Empires from a Global Perspective
Comparative research on the world-wide manifestations of mysticism in the imperial practice and performance of power seems promising for several reasons. It will enable us to highlight the appeal mystical spirituality had within the different religious traditions of the period; to point out historical contacts and transmission lines of a direct or indirect character and to discuss whether these religious and political developments fit into a common historical narrative. Regardless of what the answer to this question will be, we are certain that the elaboration of global perspectives, terminologies and research agendas is a goal worthy of being pursued in its own right. The conference will thus be part of approaches in historiography that aim at overcoming old epistemological boundaries between the study of the Orient and that of the West.

Elites, Knowledge, and Power in Modern China
The formation and transformation of elites in modern China
The ERC project “Elites, Networks, and Power in Modern Urban China” investigates how elites and elite networks in their various configurations and articulations emerged and operated not just in major cities in China, but beyond, across the Western and Japanese empires, and the power nations (Great Britain, France, United States, Japan) themselves. It focuses specifically on individual actors rather than state institutions or community organizations. The workshop seeks to address a number of core issues about the individuals and groups that emerged as elite and the modalities and processes of elite formation and (re)deployment of elite networks; the vectors, patterns and timelines of the involvement of elites in public action, from acting in an official capacity, in self- organized associations but also assuming the role of opinion leaders

Towards a New Social History of Sudan
Cette conférence, qui est également un programme de recherche, souhaite remettre au centre de l’histoire moderne et contemporaine du Soudan les « gens ordinaires ». Nous souhaitons également nous intéresser à tous les thèmes liés à l’histoire des gens « exceptionnellement normaux » (Grendi 1977) : le quotidien, les croyances, les horizons et désirs, dans toute leur diversité selon classe sociale et origine, mais aussi dans tous leurs liens et circulations. Même si la microhistoire a surtout marqué l’historiographie européenne, elle a inspiré aussi des nombreuses études en histoire du Moyen Orient et de l’Afrique (voir l’historiographie de l’Afrique du Sud). Elle a aussi des affinités avec des historiographies non-européennes comme les Études subalternes (malgré leurs différences reconnues). Nous croyons que le croisement de ces approches ne peut que mener à une meilleure connaissance des acteurs et actrices « ordinaires ».

Global Social History: Class and Social Transformation in World History
This conference interweaves global and social history, exploring global social history as a new field of historical inquiry. The papers aim to demonstrate that we cannot understand the emergence and transformation of social groups across the modern world, such as the aristocracy, the economic bourgeoisie, the educated middle classes, or the peasantry, without considering the impact of global entanglements on class formation.

En quoi le spectacle cinématographique fait-il communauté ? Doit-il être considéré comme une instance de division ou un moteur consensuel au sein de celles-ci ? Comment se forgent les publics en situation minoritaire ? Il s’agira de questionner côte à côte, parfois d’un seul tenant, deux types de processus : les phénomènes d’homogénéisation culturelle et ceux de coexistence, forcée ou consentie, entre des groupes multiples au sein d’un même territoire en explorant le large éventail de pratiques collectives politiques et sociales émergeant au sein et en marge des espaces de projection animée.

Revue d’histoire de l’enfance « irrégulière » | Numéro thématique 22 – 2020
Over the past several years, historiography that combines Childhood and Youth Studies with Colonial/Postcolonial Studies has demonstrated the importance of the place and role of children and youth in imperial constructions. In 2012, the Revue d’histoire de l’enfance “irrégulière” (RHEI) contributed to the development of this field with its issue on “Displaced Childhoods in Colonial Contexts” (no. 14, 2012). The journal will continue to explore new paths of research on this subject by dedicating issue 22 (2020) to child protection in colonial and post-colonial contexts.

Ce colloque s’interrogera sur l’influence exercée par les ministres de la parole dans le processus de légitimation de la noblesse dans l’Espagne de l’Ancien Régime. On tentera d’examiner sous un éclairage nouveau quels furent les recours employés en chaire pour la défense de la noblesse, quels prédicateurs réussirent à pénétrer les cercles nobiliaires, et enfin si les prédicateurs furent les véritables garants de l’immobilisme social pendant l’Ancien Régime.
