Interdisciplinarity and the challenge of the transformative sciences
Le vendredi 13 décembre 2019 à AgroParisTech se déroulera une journée d'études de l'association Natures Sciences Sociétés Dialogues ayant pour thème l’interdisciplinarité à l’épreuve des sciences transformatives. Cette journée d’étude vise à questionner les incidences du recours à des pratiques de recherche-action s’inscrivant dans cette perspective, dans la mesure où elles réaffirment l’importance du lien entre sciences et sociétés, qui constitue un des thèmes structurants de l’association Natures Sciences Sociétés Dialogues, depuis sa création au début des années 1990.

The seminar is the meeting point between different SPHERE teams (Sciences, Philosophie, Histoire – UMR 7219, laboratoire SPHERE) that are interested in mathematics. L'idée de ce colloque d'une journée sur Alexandre von Humboldt est de réunir des spécialistes de diverses disciplines qui couvrent aujourd'hui les nombreux domaines auxquels le travail et les idées de von Humboldt ont contribué, en particulier dans son œuvre maîtresse Kosmos (1845-1862). Nous voulons montrer comment le travail scientifique de ce plus grand encyclopédiste de la première moitié de l'Europe du XIXe siècle est plus que jamais au cœur des questions liées à notre planète d'origine, la Terre, et aux questions posées par notre entrée dans l’Anthropocène.

Philosophy, History and Sociology of Artificial Intelligence
The purpose of this seminar is to position itself at the center of the scientific, epistemological, technological and societal transformations that the developments of artificial intelligence engage. The seminar we propose therefore aims to study AI in its technological / scientific duality, through its historical, philosophical, epistemological, ethical and sociological aspects. In order to understand the modern stakes of this discipline, we will consider it here as defined in its historicity, but also as a scientific tool, tool of knowledge and transformation of knowledge, of understanding, finally as a socio-cultural entity in interaction with its environment, whether it is human or non-human.

Living collections through the prism of the humanities and social sciences
Les « collections vivantes » sont comprises comme des ensembles inventoriés de spécimens en vie, conservés au sein de musées, de muséums ou d’instituts scientifiques. Elles incluent les collections botaniques, zoologiques, ou microbiologiques. À travers une approche anthropologique, historique ou philosophique, le séminaire explorera quelques questions. Comment ont été et sont définies aujourd’hui les collections vivantes ? Par qui et pour qui ? Quelles sont leurs raisons d’être et comment s’articulent-elles à des paradigmes scientifiques ? Quelles valeurs les sous-tendent ? Quelles spécificités leur caractère vivant apporte-t-il en termes de pratique de collecte, de conservation, de recherche, et d’exposition ?

Quantum Social Theory: The Future of Sociology?
In sociology, without explicit basis on quantum theory, numerous streams established strong similarities with it, setting at the forefront of their paradigm: the subjectivity of the observer, the continuous adjustment between the object and the observer, the impossibility to be fully deterministic or discussions about an objective reality. In this session, we invite panellists to discuss the links that can be drawn between quantum theory and sociology. We welcome both empirical (qualitative or quantitative) as well as theoretical papers. Depending on the variety and the quality of the papers, a publication will be considered to set the basis of this emerging theoretical stream.

Life and Mind. Aristotelian themes in contemporary philosophy
Despite the interest in exploring Aristotelian themes in contemporary philosophy, there has been no coordinated attempt to survey or integrate the ways in which Aristotle’s approach to understanding life, mind, and the relation between them might inform and enrich our own. The objective of this workshop is to explore the way in which Aristotelian thought can brought to bear on contemporary research on the much-debated issue of the so-called mind-body problem and on its implications for the conceptualization of notions such as that of organism, animal and human perception and action, human moral agency, and the relation between mind and life.

What humanities for what uses of the digital?
Les « humanités numériques » tiennent-elles leur promesse de méthodologies « augmentées » par l’informatique et d’une forme de « science ouverte » ? Quels sont les effets de leur développement sur la division du travail scientifique, sur la place relative des disciplines, sur leur manière d’observer le monde social ? Quelles contraintes, déontologiques et scientifiques, pèsent sur la réutilisation de matériaux comme les témoignages ou les entretiens (sous forme enregistrée ou transcrite) ? Au-delà de ces questions, cette sixième séance du séminaire PLATEM entend offrir l’opportunité d’un débat à la fois entre représentants des LLSHS – dans toute leur diversité – confrontées au numérique, mais aussi avec les informaticiens.

The role of the scientific argument in communication strategies tackling sensitive issues
Le recours à la science apparaît comme une stratégie nouvelle de communication sensible. Il se réalise en communication d’acceptabilité, de risque (Motulsky, 2018) de crise, ainsi que sur les sujets à forts enjeux sociétaux. La communication corporate et d’influence, les relations publiques, sont particulièrement concernées. Le recours à la science comme argument communicationnel s’inscrit comme argument d’autorité (Latour, 2011) utilisant trois modalités ; le recours aux publications scientifiques comme outil de preuve de ses messages, l’association de scientifiques reconnus, même en dehors du champ disciplinaire concerné, la promotion de publications via des instituts créés dans un objectif de légitimation des points de vue, cette dernière hypothèse s’effectuant aux frontières des méthodes d’astroturfing.

A look at Louis Rougier (1889-1982)
Louis Rougier (1889-1982) est un des grands épistémologues français de l’entre-deux-guerres. Il fut proche du Cercle de Vienne, seul membre français du Mouvement pour l’Unité de la Science qui lui a succédé, organisateur à Paris en 1938 du colloque Lippmann (considéré comme l’acte de naissance du néo-libéralisme) : cependant l’œuvre de ce personnage controversé reste largement méconnue. Cette journée d’études, qui s’inscrit dans le prolongement du colloque international qui lui a été consacré à Genève en octobre 2004, propose de préciser divers aspects de sa pensée, en examinant plus particulièrement les rapports qu’il a entretenus avec certains de ses contemporains (Boll, Destouches, Allais). Il s’agira aussi de compléter notre connaissance du monde académique français avant et après la seconde guerre mondiale.

Shesvie study days 2019
La question des origines de l’homme est une vraie interrogation depuis le XVIIIe siècle, en Occident. Depuis, le savoir de nos origines s’est construit au carrefour de sciences nouvelles, distinctes, et même fort différentes les unes des autres. Toutes ces disciplines, au-delà de leur évidente disparité, convergent pourtant autour d’un même objet. Elles interrogent toutes à leur manière, depuis les méthodes qui sont chaque fois les leurs, l’humain et sa longue histoire constitutive. Peut-on néanmoins rapprocher ces « anthropogenèses » distinctes et les penser ensemble, comme autant de points de vue différents sur une même histoire ? Une interrogation transdisciplinaire, une réflexion commune sur notre humanité et sa préhistoire sont-elles aujourd’hui possibles ?

Fake news : Knowledge, power and conflict in the public space
La revue Études de communication lance un appel à contribution pour un numéro thématique visant à interroger les logiques et les pratiques sociales, individuelles ou institutionnelles, participant à l’émergence, à l’appropriation, à la production et à la mise en circulation des discours à propos des fake news. Largement ouvert aux disciplines constituant les sciences humaines et sociales et aux multiples écoles constructivistes (pragmatiste, interactionniste, relationniste, systémiste, structuraliste…), cet appel souhaite réunir dans un dossier publié par la revue Études de communication des travaux originaux permettant une analyse du phénomène. Des travaux amenant un éclairage de la notion dans son épaisseur historique, juridique et socio-économique seront également appréciés.
