De la peinture d’histoire du XIX^e siècle aux grandes productions cinématographiques contemporaines, les œuvres visuelles ont tendance à traiter des actions, des émotions ou des événements collectifs en les incarnant dans une figure individuelle qui les emblématise. Cette stratégie a prouvé sa très grande efficacité, du point de vue visuel et du point de vue narratif ; cependant, elle a pour conséquence la rareté des formes visuelles du collectif comme tel. Plus difficile à représenter et peut-être aussi plus difficile à lire, le « collectif » est cependant un thème constant des représentations et des narrations visuelles contemporaines : peuples, masses, foules, multitudes, groupes, classes traversent l’histoire du monde contemporain en ne cessant d’y reposer le problème de l’existence d’un sujet collectif, rendant ainsi aigu et passionnant celui de sa figuration.

Body, culture and identity in Lavapies, Madrid

From the individual to the collective

The objective of this Seminar is to stress the importance of a collaborative and participative way to understand through our senses. We want to explore connections between thinking and action in everyday city experiences, developing “in situ” actions. We consider that the knowledge of the space need space experiences. We aim to develop a collective, community exploration of the vital flow of the Lavapiés area in Madrid altering the classical relationship between artist, landscape and inhabitants. This exploration will allow the construction of an intangible map of audiovisual fragments, photo, phonographs, video art, performative actions. The direct experimentation of space helps us understand it, as well as "to perform it"; it helps us understand the aesthetic and emotional relationships we have with it. In order to get our objectives, urban artists, soundscape experts, theater groups, architects, philosopher, civil and social associations, citizens…will be invited.

Queerising the aesthetics

In 1990, Judith Butler published Gender Trouble; a book which takes from French Theory to create an other, the Queer Theory, which does not bother with anatomical or social destiny to put forward the performativity of gender and of sexe. Quickly translated in many languages, Gender Trouble will have a very noticeable impact on literary and movie studies, rapidly generating a heuristic acting out. Paradoxically, the same can not be said about aesthetic studies. Why? What are the oppositions? How can the queer way of thinking give back their inherent infinite “openness” to works of art?

La musique, perçue comme universelle, paraît l’exemple même d’une forme de communication mondiale réussie. Mais cette mondialisation n’est-elle pas partielle, dans la mesure où la musique se diffuse en grande partie grâce à des lieux de formation spécialisés (conservatoire, écoles…) et des communautés d’auditeurs (amateurs de jazz, de rock, d’opéra, de musique contemporaine…) ? En outre, la musique ne perd-elle pas de sa diversité dans une globalisation à tout vent, en particulier lorsque les hybridations culturelles visent essentiellement à identifier de nouveaux marchés ? Enfin, une grande partie de la production musicale ne reste-t-elle pas ancrée dans un territoire ou limitée au seul monde occidental ?

Les entreprises et les États consacrent une importance croissante à nos identités numériques, à leur surveillance ou à leur gestion. Il devient alors nécessaire de s’interroger sur les effets que les logiques industrielles, économiques et politiques ont sur nos questionnements éthiques et sur nos capacités à agir. La conférence traitetera de l’ambivalence intrinsèque du numérique : même si la transformation actuelle ouvre des possibles, elle redistribue différemment le jeu des contraintes et des incitations et tend insidieusement à créer une malléabilité plus grande des individus.

Cultural transfers, spaces and influence in European capitals since 1945

Berlin, Londres, Madrid, Paris

Territoires de flux, de réception et d'influence, les capitales européennes se caréctérisent par une ouverture culturelle de plus en plus large sur l'Europe et le monde depuis 1945. Ce colloque se propose à partir des cas de Berlin, Londres, Madrid et Berlin d'évaluer les dynamiques spatio-temporelles à l'oeuvre dans le secteur culturel autour de trois thématiques : les transferts, les espaces et le rayonnement culturels, dans une approche d'histoire culturelle urbaine comparée en associant d'autres disciplines scientifiques. Il s'agira de montrer comment les transferts se sont opérés, les facteurs qui les ont conditionnés, d'examiner les transformation de la géographie culturelle de ces villes-capitales, la relation entre restructuration urbaine et culture, enfin de s'arrêter sur la question du rayonnement culturel de ces villes.

Crossing French Metropolises: Exiled Artists and Intellectuals during the 20th century

Following “Arrival Cities: Migrating Artists and New Metropolitan Topographies”, the first conference of the ERC research project Relocating Modernism: Global Metropolises, Modern Art and Exile (METROMOD) held at the LMU Munich in November/December 2018, a workshop will be organized at the German Center for Art History (DFK Paris), on 4 July 2019. Building on common interests of the DFK Paris and METROMOD—such as movements of artists, ideas and productions—this workshop will focus on the temporary exile of artists and intellectuals in French cities throughout the twentieth century, which was marked by (e)migration waves. Located at the crossroads of disciplines such as Art History, Exile Studies, History of Sociology, Architecture and Urban Studies, this topic calls for a transdisciplinary approach.
