  Films in the Mirror

  Forty years of cinema in Japan (1980-2020)

  This edition proposes rethinking the last forty years of Japanese cinema along the following lines: industrial, aesthetic, thematic and theoretical. The history of cinema in Japan is still polarised into two “golden ages”: the 1930s and the 1950s, both periods of excellence through their production and artistry. The works of Ozu, Mizoguchi, Naruse and Kurosawa naturally come to mind for their expression of what is considered as quintessence of uniquely Japanese cinema. But the impact of a golden age is discernible only when in proportion to the decline that surrounds it: from the fits and starts of primitive cinema, to the provocations of the new waves, all the while snubbed by militaristic propaganda. Historiography would nevertheless find its model in this scansion between the peak and trough. But sixty years after the end of its last “golden age”, what relevance does such model still hold, if not to deplore the former glory of a production now adrift?

  Japanese architecture, city and landscape - Japarchi

  2020-2021

  Le réseau scientifique thématique Japarchi se donne pour objectif de définir des notions et des dispositifs fondamentaux de la culture spatiale du Japon, concernant l’architecture, les villes, les paysages. Le séminaire annuel Japarchi présente des interventions prenant appui sur un terme ou une expression en japonais. Ces entrées lexicales concernent des dispositifs ou des agencements matériels, construits ou se déployant dans le territoire ; des notions ou des concepts relevant de l’architecture, de l’urbanisme ou du paysage ; des acteurs ou actrices qui agissent dans ou avec l’espace. Chacune de ces entrées propose une description, une mise en perspective historique, une analyse des fonctions et des significations dans leur actualité, accompagnées de tout autre caractéristique essentielle. Après un travail de relecture scientifique et d’édition, celle-ci fait ensuite l’objet d’une notice éditée en ligne sur le site internet de Japarchi.

  The drudges of the Axis : exploitable persecuted persons and ambivalent persecutors during WWII (Asia, Europe, Latin America)

  This meeting is a continuation of the UFA (French-German University) Montpellier-Weimar Colloquium "Construction of myths of war heroes (Germany, France, Japan) organized by Philippe Wellnitz and Gérard Siary in Berlin in 2014. After having there discussed the ambivalence in the construction of "war-heroe", this new conference is interested this time in two other ambivalences associated with the Second World War: those of the positioning of certain host states and "the ethics of survival" of persecuted persons who fled from Axis-occupied territories to other Axis-allied or to neutral States.

  The avant-gards in question: postures and practices since the fifties

  アヴァンギャルドを考える──1950年代以降の形勢と実践

  Le XX^e siècle a été marqué par un certain nombre de mouvements artistiques « avant-gardistes ». Ces expériences sont toutefois inégalement abordées par la recherche. En France par exemple, si on mentionne souvent la lignée qui va du futurisme au surréalisme en passant par le dadaïsme, les travaux sur les avant-gardes depuis les années 1950 sont encore peu nombreux. Ce colloque se propose ainsi de mettre en lumière les activités de poètes, d'écrivains et d'artistes qui ont envisagé la notion d'« avant-garde » depuis la seconde guerre mondiale.
