Ce colloque propose d’explorer un point particulier de l'intersection entre le religieux et le maternel. À travers les figures de femmes mystiques, saintes, enseignantes spirituelles, sages-femmes, activistes, guerrières, martyres, ou ayant d’autres formes d’engagement dans une vie religieuse hors du commun ou, au contraire, tout à fait ordinaire, nous vous invitons à découvrir ce que disent des traditions religieuses de cette intersection rarement examinée. Dans une perspective interdisciplinaire, avec des approches littéraires, historiques, anthropologiques, sociologiques ou théologiques, nous posons la question de la maternité en examinant des récits sacrés et hagiographiques ainsi que d’autres témoignages historiques et contemporains.

This webinar will discuss new trends in Jerusalem’s historiography, through the discussion of two books: A Liminal Church: Refugees, Conversions and the Latin Diocese of Jerusalem, 1946–1956 (Maria Chiara Rioli; Brill, 2020) and Le moine sur le toit: Histoire d’un manuscrit éthiopien trouvé à Jérusalem (1904) (Stéphane Ancel, Magdalena Krzyz ̇anowska, Vincent Lemire; Publications de la Sorbonne, 2020).

Who named the gods? Utterers, addressers, ritual agents
The ERC MAP Seminar “The Names of the Gods! 5: Who named the gods? Utterers, addressers, ritual agents” pursues the investigation on the systems of naming of the divine. This year, it focuses on the human agents in the process of naming the divine, whether they are producers of a discourse on the deities, addressers in a communication with the deities, or even experts in charge of a ritual knowledge. What agency do men and women exercise in the production of a specific denomination of the divine? How can we question their choices, their anchoring in a tradition or their innovation strategies?

Il y a 90 ans, Marcel Mauss parlait de la division par sexes comme « une division fondamentale qui a grevé de son poids toutes les sociétés. Notre sociologie, sur ce point, est très inférieure à ce qu’elle devrait être. On peut dire à nos étudiants, surtout à ceux et à celles qui pourraient un jour faire des observations sur le terrain, que nous n’avons fait que la sociologie des hommes et non pas la sociologie des femmes, ou des deux sexes » (1969 [1931] : 15). Mauss évoque déjà l’androcentrisme qui marque les sciences sociales ; il présente le genre – même si son vocabulaire n’est pas celui d’aujourd’hui – comme une dimension qui traverse la vie sociale, un opérateur de portée générale ; il alerte enfin sur le fait que la division des techniques du corps entre les sexes va au-delà des formes sexuées du travail. Ce numéro de Techniques & Culture aimerait s’appuyer sur ce programme – qui reste encore largement à bâtir – à partir d’études de cas provenant de différentes époques et aires géographiques.

Religions and transnational migrations (19th-20th centuries)
Depuis vingt-cinq ans, la question migratoire est prégnante dans le discours politique et médiatique, suscitant débat, interrogation, mais aussi travaux scientifiques. Si les chercheurs ont investi ce champ d’étude, l’analyse des interactions du phénomène avec le religieux est plus récente, mais souligne la place centrale qu’a pu occuper la religion dans les processus migratoires – aux origines de la migration, comme support de celle-ci, comme ressource à la fois spirituelle et sociale pour les déplacés –, et les transformations du religieux qu’ils induisent. La réflexion historique sur les articulations entre religion et migration dans le cadre transnational est à même de compléter ces travaux des sociologues, anthropologues, géographes et théologiens. Aussi, l’Association française d'histoire religieuse (AFHRC) a choisi d’y consacrer sa journée d’étude annuelle. On considèrera les grands mouvements de population à l’époque contemporaine (XIXe-XXe siècles), forcés ou volontaires, sans exclure l’exil ni les migrations plus ponctuelles.

1956-1958: A revolutionary period that changed Africa (and the world)
The objective of this panel is to compare the various social mobilizations that took place in Africa during the years 1956-1958 and which arguably constitute a historical watershed. The main aim of the panel is not the making of an abstract comparative analysis, but the analysis, based on the testimonial material collected, of how the memory of these events has been structured over time. Moreover, we are interested in understanding what the impacts of these social movements were on the structuring of states and what continuities can be found between the mobilizations of that period and the ary social mobilizations that have shaken the continent in the last ten years, from the ‘Arab Spring’ of 2011 onwards.

Rethinking tobacco history: Commodities, empire and agency in global perspective, 1780–1960
Tobacco was one of the most important globally traded commodities from the 17th century through to the present day, and yet it has received relatively little attention in the historiography of modern empires in comparison to other commodities, such as sugar or cotton. As a result, recent approaches to rewriting the history of European imperialism from a more global perspective have hardly been problematized with regard to the peculiarities of tobacco history. Nowadays, studies no longer understand empire as a rigid relationship between metropole and colonies, but take the dynamics of actors within an empire as seriously as the networks and global processes that crossed imperial borders, or indeed lay beyond them. The conference starts from this assumption.

This interdisciplinary conference aspires to bring together (post-)colonial historians, legal historians, curators, international lawyers, and others engaged with the field to establish research collaborations by critically investigating stories of colonial looting, the framing of colonial history within museums, the origins of the legal framework concerning European laws of war and restitution, as well as a way forward for restitution claims.

The basic questions of this workshop are: How did the empires of the Ancient Near East affect the lives of ordinary people in their realm? To which extent was rural life and life in smaller towns permeated by imperial agents and policies, hence by imperial dynamics?

Les dix ans du conflit en Syrie sont l’occasion de faire un état des lieux des usages de la « question kurde » au Moyen-Orient. Ce numéro spécial sur la crise syrienne et la question kurde (2011-2021) du Cahier d'histoire immédiate souhaite avant tout interroger le concept même des « questions kurdes » en essayant de décrypter les différentes réalités sociales et politiques kurdes observables sur le terrain. Les coordinateurs encouragent des propositions d’article qui se libèrent du poids du politique et des différents nationalismes pour mieux observer les utilisations récentes de la « question kurde » dans le contexte syrien.

This meeting is a continuation of the UFA (French-German University) Montpellier-Weimar Colloquium "Construction of myths of war heroes (Germany, France, Japan) organized by Philippe Wellnitz and Gérard Siary in Berlin in 2014. After having there discussed the ambivalence in the construction of "war-heroe", this new conference is interested this time in two other ambivalences associated with the Second World War: those of the positioning of certain host states and "the ethics of survival" of persecuted persons who fled from Axis-occupied territories to other Axis-allied or to neutral States.

Neighbourhood in Asia: political stakes, mobilisations and social practices
L’enjeu de cette journée d’étude consiste à croiser les analyses sur la manière dont évoluent les liens de voisinage dans les pays d’Asie, dans un contexte où les évolutions démographiques dessinent, dans le cas de l’Asie de l’Est, comme une « modernité compressée » (Chang 2010), qui s’accompagne d’intenses changements sur les plans économique, social et culturel. Il sera également intéressant de réfléchir aux transferts de modèles entre pays, qui peuvent être en rapport avec l’histoire coloniale (Yoshihara, 2000). Il s’agira donc notamment de mettre en question les discours portant sur les spécificités culturelles tels que le groupisme ou la réduction aux traditions propres à un pays. Enfin, nous nous intéresserons aux rapports des riverains aux autorités publiques, ainsi qu’au sein des communautés de voisins elles-mêmes, en considérant les formes de mobilisation de la société civile observables dans ce cadre.

Lorsque le retour à la terre, perçu un temps comme un refuge, se heurte à des épreuves : sécheresse, inondation, incendies, érosion, mais aussi conflits entre personnes, groupes, intérêts ? Ce séminaire de recherche vise ainsi à examiner, entre Europe et Japon (ou au-delà), les initiatives, les expériences, les collectifs qui se sont constitués en réponse à des crises, passées, actuelles ou anticipées et quels liens au milieu, au vivant et aux autres celles-ci promeuvent.

En 1988, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak publia son essai le plus influent dans les études post-coloniales et la théorie critique. Spivak est allée au-delà de la scène de la recherche académique sur le colonialisme et au-delà de ses enjeux: elle a expliqué pourquoi un seul récit de la réalité a été établi comme normatif et a également ouvert la voie au dépassement d’une telle normalisation. Avec ce numéro thématique, nous visons à réorienter et à interpréter le terme subalterne au sens large en relation avec l'environnement et nous envisageons cet enjeu comme un forum d'idées et de discussion dans le sous-domaine de l'histoire environnementale coloniale et postcoloniale. Nous attendons des contributions portant sur ces deux questions primordiales: qu'est-ce qu'un focus spécifique sur l'histoire de l'environnement ajoute au débat sur la subalternité? Quel type d'implications méthodologiques et théoriques les études subalternes ont-elles sur l'histoire de l'environnement en tant que discipline?
