Religiousness in Mediterrranean towns (12th-15th century)
Ce quatrième atelier de formation doctorale s’inscrit dans le prolongement direct de la scuola di alti studi dottorali qui, de 2004 à 2016, a constitué un lieu de formation de pointe pour les jeunes chercheurs consacrant leurs recherches à l’étude de la culture locale. L’objectif des ateliers est l’étude des sociétés urbaines du Moyen Âge, en mettant l’accent sur les systèmes politiques et les différentes manifestations de l’imaginaire urbain et en portant le regard sur toutes les villes du bassin méditerranéen – celles de l’Occident chrétien, celles de la zone d’influence byzantine et celles des régions sous domination islamique. Les ateliers offrent un environnement stimulant pour les échanges intellectuels entre spécialistes réputés et jeunes chercheurs en formation, pour favoriser, à travers des moments de discussion et d’échange, le renouvellement de la recherche et l’élargissement des perspectives comparatives.

Archaeologies of transidentities: medieval worlds
Ce colloque vise à faire dialoguer des recherches sur des champs de la médiévistique qui ne communiquent pas suffisamment. Les pistes et hypothèses provenant du christianisme médiéval pourront être confrontées à l’étude de textes mystiques, hagiographiques, médicaux, judiciaires, littéraires... des mondes judaïques, chrétiens et islamiques. L’examen de formulations de la transidentité dans d’autres aires culturelles sera le bienvenu. Priorité sera donnée à des dossiers inédits ainsi qu’à des approches interdisciplinaires, croisant littérature médiévale, linguistique, histoire et histoire de l’art. Il s’agira d’échanger, de partager et de discuter sur des questions du passé qui invitent à repenser les enjeux du présent.

The Classics in the Pulpit. Ancient Literature and Preaching in the Middle Ages
The aim of the conference is to shed new light on this both striking and irritating practice. Papers (25 min) can deal with topics such as the reasons and occasions for the use of the classics in preaching, the hermeneutic and literary strategies applied in order to adapt pagan mythology to homiletic needs, the social and educational background of preachers and their audiences, the connections of classicizing sermons with other fields of literature such as vernacular poetry, or the discourse they provoked within the clerical milieu. Applications from all relevant disciplines (e.g. history, literature, theology, philosophy) are welcome.

Funerary practices and identity/ies
The passing of an individual in a community generally leads to the implementation of a complex funerary operational chain repeated upon each death. This behaviour can therefore be opposed to non-funerary deposits, characterized by the absence of funerals and/or of a dedicated tomb (corpse rejection or abandonment, burial deprivation - Boulestin 2016). The study of a given group’s “practice” (ibid.) and of its variability allows to identify differences in the deceased’s treatment and to grasp some aspects of the society of the living. Rituals and funerals – which are difficult to assess in the case of pre- and protohistoric populations - as well as funeral gestures, thus reveal one or several of the deceased’s identities. They can consist of their individual identity, related for instance to their sex, age or social status, or of their collective identity, which is “lived and produced” (Lenclud 2008) and refers to their belonging to a group. In the latter case, the role of a funerary practice is to maintain the links between its actors and to ensure its own continuity.

Nous souhaiterions initier une réflexion collective relevant des problématiques des Night Studies appliquées aux périodes antique à moderne, en menant une interrogation conceptuelle et notionnelle d'ordre philosophique, heuristique, herméneutique, épistémologique, esthétique et historiographique sur la spécificité de la nuit.

Visibility of religious difference in Medieval Europe and the Mediterranean
Hamsa. Journal of Judaic and Islamic Studies, nº 7 (2020)
The goal of this volume is to show ways in which religion marked a perceptible difference in Medieval Europe and the Mediterranean. Considering visibility in the wider sense of the word -also including acoustic perception and other aspects that would differentiate them- religion made people either from their own will or under external coercion- visible within medieval societies. The tension between visibility through othering or self-labelling, and invisibility through cultural assimilation was a constant in the complex medieval cities and rural areas. It also carried on beyond the medieval period, sometimes reproducing previous problems, sometimes in the shape of new challenges. How did these dynamics play out? Can common patterns be found? What caused them to come into play? Where do we observe compliance or reluctance towards the aforementioned normative orders? Do we see spatial manifestations of these tensions? These (and other) questions may be addressed in case studies from different geographic areas and time periods.

L’objet du présent colloque sera de mettre en évidence les différentes manières de comprendre le terme « charité », ses pratiques et ses usages variés, dans les champs de l’argumentation et de la recherche.

Géographies de l'humanisme juridique
Composante essentielle du renouveau intellectuel européen, l’humanisme juridique (it. umanesimo giuridico, angl. legal humanism, all. humanistische Jurisprudenz) se définit par une approche des textes hérités du droit romain qui s’oppose et en même temps complète les traditions médiévales de la glose et du commentaire. Privilégiant les connaissances historiques et linguistiques tirées d’une étude la plus vaste possible des œuvres, monuments et documents de l’Antiquité, les juristes humanistes ont contribué à replacer les écrits du Corpus juris civilis au sein de la civilisation gréco-romaine qui les a vu naître, tout en parachevant l’exégèse déjà mûrie au Moyen Âge grâce au travail des interprètes.

"Iǧtihād" and "taqlīd" in Sunni and Shiite Islam
L'histoire de la pensée musulmane montre que la relation entre le taqlīd et l’iǧtihād est complexe. Le dossier de ce MIDÉO se propose d’approfondir les deux logiques à la lumière du patrimoine islamique. Les contributions pourront souligner les discours théologiques de légitimité ou de réfutation, mais aussi leur articulation. Au-delà de la rivalité entre les deux logiques, il conviendra de vérifier si l’on reste bien dans un continuum, et de vérifier que si les perspectives hégémoniques sont rivales, elles ne sont pas incompatibles.
