  How to finish?

  Medieval literary seminar

  Beaucoup d’œuvres médiévales nous sont parvenues inachevées, pour ne citer que les exemples notoires du Conte du graal, du Tristan de Béroul ou du Roman de la rose de Guillaume de Lorris. Au-delà des raisons accidentelles – mort de l’auteur, lacune de la tradition manuscrite – difficilement mesurables, on questionnera la pertinence de la notion d’achèvement pour les œuvres médiévales. Comment pense-t-on, au Moyen Âge, la fin d’une œuvre ? Cette dernière doit-t-elle nécessairement aboutir à une forme close qui seule achèverait de lui donner un sens ? Est-ce l’achèvement, le fait de mener l’œuvre à chief, de lui donner par-là une forme de couronnement, qui fait l’œuvre ? La question de l’achèvement de l’œuvre soulève celle de l’achèvement du sens.On envisagera les œuvres inachevées –ou supposées telles– qui travaillent sans fin « l’impossibilité d’en finir », et la question des continuations qui les prolongent. Laisser inachevé, donc, pour pouvoir toujours recommencer. S’interrompre, s’arrêter de dire pour laisser la place au « contre-dit ». À l’inverse, comment clore ? Comment mettre un terme à l’écriture, sortir de l’œuvre ?

  Call for papers - Middle Ages

  Disguise, dressing-up and transformations

  Alors que notre travail en tant que chercheur·se·s est de classer, il s’agira ici d’étudier des cas de l’entre-deux au Moyen Âge : on se penchera sur la porosité entre différents groupes établis et les transformations, extérieures et intérieures, que cela implique. Il pourra s'agir de la transition d'une espèce à l'autre, d'un genre à l'autre, d'une espèce ou encore d'une ethnie à l'autre. Cette transformation de l'extérieur pourra notamment (mais pas seulement) passer par le déguisement ; quand la transformation est un passage d'un genre à l'autre, on parle souvent de « travestissement ». On prendra garde à ne pas considérer les trois termes « déguisements, « travestissements », « transformations » comme des équivalents : loin de les envisager comme synonymes, nous invitons à penser la relation extérieur/intérieur d'un·e individu·e de manière dynamique. Car modifier son aspect extérieur peut aussi permettre de révéler son intériorité réelle au monde, d'attester d'une transformation intime, ou d'accompagner cette transformation identitaire.

  The Medieval Eschatology

  Eschatology is one of the central components of medieval Christian culture. The end of the world, the Last Judgment, salvation, Messianism, the Antichrist, the Apocalypticism and millenarianism are inescapable elements in what we may generally describe as "Medieval eschatology". It is the intention of the International Conference "The Medieval Eschatology" to provide a venue for reflecting on these as well as other eschatological issues that may be proposed. This can be done analytically or descriptively from both a practical and theoretical approach.

  On June 18th and 19th 2020 the Badische Landesbibliothek organizes the international and interdisciplinary congress “The return of the Wigalois - a handwriting of the 15th century in the focus of new research approaches”. The congress presents and discusses first results of the again possible scientific altercation with materiality of the handwriting, its production context and the book market at the upper Rhine, for which it was produced.

  Call for papers - Middle Ages

  The Classics in the Pulpit. Ancient Literature and Preaching in the Middle Ages

  The aim of the conference is to shed new light on this both striking and irritating practice. Papers (25 min) can deal with topics such as the reasons and occasions for the use of the classics in preaching, the hermeneutic and literary strategies applied in order to adapt pagan mythology to homiletic needs, the social and educational background of preachers and their audiences, the connections of classicizing sermons with other fields of literature such as vernacular poetry, or the discourse they provoked within the clerical milieu. Applications from all relevant disciplines (e.g. history, literature, theology, philosophy) are welcome.

  Le monde médiéval (mundus), création divine, ordonnée et parfaite, se suffit du principe divin qui en règle le fonctionnement. Cette perfection du monde, inséparable de sa clôture et de son intégrité, semble aussi avoir été pensée comme principe de la création humaine. Partant de réflexions sur le haut Moyen Âge, l’objectif de cette journée d’étude sera de suivre la pertinence, la survivance et peut-être l’effacement et le remplacement de ce schéma de pensée sur toute la période médiévale.

  Guido delle Colonne and his Reception in Medieval Europe

  Guido delle Colonne’s Historia destructionis Troiae has been a phenomenal success since its composition at the end of the 13th century. Nevertheless, academic studies remain limited and questions remain open about the author himself (judge, historian and poet?), about his sources – including the essential Trojan novel in verse by Benoît de Saint Maure –, about the construction and style of his work and about its intents in a particularly troubled period. While significant progress has been made in recent years, studies are far from being exhaustive and the case deserve to be considered anew. Historia's interest lies in particular in the translations, adaptations and summaries it generated throughout Europe until the 17^th century. This international conference aims thus to shed new lights on the original text as well as on the diversity of its appropriations, between filiation and emancipation. In this regard, the spectacular diffusion has contributed to strenghten a Trojan European literature.
