Imperial Artefacts: History, Law, and the Looting of Cultural Property

This interdisciplinary conference aspires to bring together (post-)colonial historians, legal historians, curators, international lawyers, and others engaged with the field to establish research collaborations by critically investigating stories of colonial looting, the framing of colonial history within museums, the origins of the legal framework concerning European laws of war and restitution, as well as a way forward for restitution claims.

L’association Legs et Littérature (ALEL) lance un appel à contributions pour le 16^e numéro de la revue Legs et Littérature, consacré à la thématique des écritures, des pandémies et des catastrophes naturelles qui paraîtra en décembre 2020 chez Legs édition sous la direction de Mourad Loudiyi et Alma Abou Fakher. The problem of representation is central to the disciplinary fields of all the human and social sciences, most often implicitly. This omnipresence sometimes makes us forget that it is a notion whose definition, status and function are subject to the fluctuations of history. What interests us is the discrepancy between what this notion has been able to encompass over time and what it encompasses nowadays, as well as the explanation that can be given to these discrepancies or possible ruptures. The reflection focuses in particular on the link between the notion of representation and the notions of 'heritage' - tangible or intangible objects, but also products of a social construction - and of 'memory', since it is constructed through concrete representations, whether social or discursive practices.

XVIII International Symposium on Civilizing Processes

The National University of Colombia and the Department of Citizen Culture of the Secretary of Culture, Recreation and Sport of Bogota, Colombia have joined forces to organize the upcoming XVIII International Symposium on Civilizing Processes (SIPC). The SIPCs were born in 1996 on a Brazilian initiative and have been held every two years in Latin America to encourage the exchange of ideas and research results among scientists from various disciplines who find in Norbert Elias’ work a source of guidance in facing the challenges of today’s world and who share an interest in social sciences adjusted to reality.

73rd congress of the Institut d'histoire de l'Amérique française (IHAF)

Pour son 73^e congrès, qui aura lieu à Orford en Estrie les 15, 16 et 17 octobre 2020, l'Institut d'histoire de l'Amérique française sollicite des communications qui mobilisent la notion d’événement, mais également qui la mettent à l’épreuve et la questionnent, des communications qui cherchent à révéler des aspects méconnus d’événements bien enracinés dans les récits historiques, mais également qui mettent ou remettent en scène des événements oubliés de l’historiographie ou de la mémoire collective, des communications qui réfléchissent à la manière dont l’événement est fabriqué, historicisé. Au final, nous n’avons pas à choisir entre l’événement et la longue durée, mais il y a certainement une nécessité de réfléchir à la place de l’événement dans la longue durée.

Frontier(s) and Frontier-zone(s) in the English-speaking world

It may be argued that any frontier is the expression of what is discontinuous, of the existence of an ‘inside’ and of an ‘outside’, in short, that a frontier is an attempt to keep the ‘other’ at bay, whatever the meaning of the term – a given geographical territory, or a specific political entity, or a different culture, or else all of these put together. These considerations are in tune with the etymological origin of the word ‘frontier’ itself, i.e. anything that helps a group of people ‘develop a united front’. Examples abound, from the so-called ‘natural’ frontier of this or that country to Brexit, to the wall that President Trump has set out to build between his own country and Mexico.

Cette conférence se propose d'interroger les relations de la fiction américaine aux innovations qui ont marqué les premières décennies du XXI^e siècle : internet, médias sociaux, objets et environnements intelligents, intelligence artificielle, nanotechnologies, ingénierie génétique et autres biotechnologies, transhumanisme. Ces innovations techniques redéfinissent la manière dont nous habitons notre monde, interagissons les uns avec les autres et appréhendons l'humain dans son rapport de plus en plus étroit à la machine, non plus, comme autrefois, soigné ou réparé, mais désormais augmenté ou remplacé. Qu'en est-il alors de nos pratiques artistiques et culturelles ? Ces avancées récentes modifient-ils la langue et la littérature ?

Thinking the Latin American right wings

IVth International Congress

The IV^th International Congress Thinking the Latin American right wings follows the three previous ones held in France (2014), Argentina (2016) and Brazil (2018), which have permitted the constitution of a community of researchers working on Latin American right-wings. Several specialists from different countries and disciplines have joined in this network, in order to promote projects and studies on this theme, and stimulated the development of new issues related to this political family. The use of various methodologies such as the analysis of political traditions and cultures, representations and imaginaries, identities, networks, sensitivities and memories have made it possible to consolidate a field of study that has become relevant to understand current Latin American political scene.

From postmodernism to posthumanism. Latin-American literature and cinema

Suite à la journée d’étude « Le temps du posthumain ? » qui s’est tenue à l’université Paris Diderot-Paris 7 et à Bétonsalon – Centre d’art et de recherche le 2 juin 2017, il s’agit de poursuivre la réflexion autour du posthumanisme et ses représentations littéraires et cinématographiques, cette fois-ci en Amérique latine.

Initialement programmée le 4 juin de cette année, la journée consacrée à la question « Du postmodernisme au posthumanisme. Littérature et cinéma latino-américains » est reportée et sera accompagnée par une autre journée sur le même sujet mais sans les limites géographiques et chronologiques. Le présent appel concerne cette dernière journée. Le colloque aura lieu les 27 et 28 novembre 2020.
